posted a message on Hacked, cracked clients

The context for this thread is that this support thread is asking for support with a hacked client, and we (the forum staff) have allowed that thread to continue to exist. There was a discussion in a Private Message between myself and Herb_ regarding whether or not we permit hacked clients, and here is an excerpt that clarifies my position:

"My understanding of "hacked" vs. "cracked" clients is that a "hacked" client is a non-Mojang client that may have additional features but is one that obeys the Minecraft session system, meaning only those with a copy of Minecraft can play the game. A "cracked" client is one that does not respect the Minecraft session system and allows anyone with the client to play regardless of their ownership of the game -- like offline mode. The forum explicitly does not allow piracy (which includes cracked clients, because cracked clients allow people who don't own Minecraft to play it) but does not disallow "hacked" clients because they aren't piracy, rather they are essentially game modifications."

"Although historically we have attempted to enforce the Mojang EULA on their behalf, it is very difficult because Mojang themselves are inconsistent in their enforcement and there is a lack of clarity surrounding a number of issues. The forum rules require that members abide by the Mojang EULA, but this does not mean that we will attempt to enforce the Mojang EULA as it is written on the behalf of Mojang, this is because we have found it exceptionally difficult to do that with any level of consistency in the past.

Essentially, the Mojang EULA exists as a document Mojang choose to enforce on a case by case basis, therefore when we require members abide by the Mojang EULA we are requiring they abide by Mojang enforcement. This means in practice if Mojang makes a judgement against something (e.g: they say "launcher x is banned") then we would enforce that by removing the launcher from the forum, however, if the launcher exists in a grey area and Mojang have never passed judgement on it, we would not take any action. This extends to the discussion of such launchers too: unless Mojang explicitly states that they wish to ban all custom launchers, we will permit discussion."

As it stands, the official forum position is that cracked clients are not permitted (no support, no discussion, no distribution) and hacked clients are permitted (support, discussion, distribution). This is based on my understanding of hacked vs. cracked, if my understanding is wrong then I am open to reviewing the forum rules.

posted a message on Correct forum to discuss Minecraft Better Together

do you think we'll ever be able to login to minecraft better together using an existing java edition account

That's a question we can't answer with any confidence as we're not associated with Mojang, however, we can speculate that based on the requirement to use Xbox Live accounts across all platforms, and Microsoft's standard requirement of Xbox Live accounts, it is very unlikely that you will ever be able to access the Minecraft game with your Minecraft: Java Edition account.

Further to what webrosc said, there is a forum-wide announcement outlining the changes we have made, you can find that announcement at the top of each forum, or by clicking here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/forums/forum-discussion-info/2860829-an-update-to-the-minecraft-forum-category

ummm... what about the seeds sections for other platforms (Xbox 360, PS4, etc.) because I don't see any sections on that, and it was never mentioned here.

You can find the Seeds forum for all Minecraft: Editions at the bottom of the Minecraft Editions category, here (Minecraft Editions > Minecraft Editions: Seeds).

So you're telling me I'm no longer playing Minecraft, because of some marketing bull?

How extremely rude, to tell me that "Minecraft" - the game I've loved for 7 years - is "non-Minecraft".

Do you think that the movie "A New Hope" is not star-wars, because it was renamed later? Would you tell a star-wars fan that that movie isn't a star-wars movie?

Try telling them that it's not the primary version too.

I am not arguing my opinion, I am stating how Mojang have organised the various versions of Minecraft. This thread is specifically regarding the restructuring of the forum, it is not regarding any decision made by Mojang or Microsoft. Please get in touch with Mojang or Microsoft directly if you'd like to discuss the naming of the game, or use a relevant thread on this forum if you'd like to discuss it with other players.

Minecraft refers both to the game in general and a specific version of the game, the cross-platform version available on xbox one, windows 10, android, ios and vr. For a forum that intends to use the language used by Mojang it is incorrect for us to say "Minecraft" when referring to "Minecraft: Java Edition", hence in this context "Minecraft: Java Edition" is not Minecraft. The reason I was using bold (Minecraft vs. Minecraft) in my earlier posts was to differentiate between Minecraft (the brand) and Minecraft (the cross-platform version), I apologise if this was not clear.

    Java edition is non-Minecraft?

    Java edition is the ORIGINAL!

Yeah! How is it non-Minecraft? I would understand it isn't Windows 10 edition, but Java Edition is still Minecraft :/

"Minecraft" is the name of what we know as the Better Together Update. Minecraft is available on Xbox One, Windows 10, Android, iOS and VR.

Minecraft: Java Edition is not the "Minecraft" game. Yes, Minecraft: Java Edition is still a version of Minecraft but it isn't the primary version, therefore it is "non-Minecraft".

I noticed missing prefixes tags in "Mapping and Modding: Java Edition" category and forums like "Minecraft Mods".

Thank you -- I'm unsure what happened, but I have fixed it, you should now be able to use prefixes again in the Mapping and Modding: Java Edition forums. Thank you for your patience.

I noticed that version prefixes for mods and such were removed recently. Why is that? Doesn't it make it harder to look for mods that support a specific version?

That's certainly not intentional! Which forum/category are you seeing this issue in?

So there will be no forum like those of the seeds and show your creation forums of the other editions for suggestions. They will just be posted in the discussion forums of the specific edition. Makes sense.

Due to very low traffic and the crossover between each Edition, we think that a single Seeds and Show Your Creation forum shared between the Editions is the best path, so you can find Minecraft: Editions Seeds and Minecraft: Editions Show Your Creation at the bottom of the Minecraft: Editions category.

posted a message on New forums feedback

As explained by sunperp, the Minecraft: Java Edition category gets top billing because it is by far the most popular discussion category here and we would indeed move things around based on future popularity :)

You are welcome to create a "Small Suggestions" thread for the new Minecraft game in the Suggestions forum.

Someone raised the question regarding Pocket Edition in the comments on the forum wide announcement about the changes. The long story short is that with the new Minecraft game we're unsure if the old Pocket Edition will continue to have a meaningful player base of users who have chosen not to upgrade. As time goes on and we see how interest in that forum evolves we will make a decision about the long-term future. I expect that the majority of players will upgrade and if that is true we will move Pocket Edition into the Minecraft: Editions category, this change will be made in the coming weeks.

You are still allowed to make suggestions for the various Minecraft: Editions. The Discussion and Suggestion forums for each of these editions were not receiving very much in the way of new posts, therefore we consolidated them into a single Discussion forum which is where members are encouraged to discuss the game and make suggestions. I will update the descriptions of these forums to better communicate this change.

Thank you for your feedback! If you have any more please let us know.

You are not allowed to do this, members who do this will receive warnings and their duplicate threads will be deleted. There is no functionality to repost a thread, they are just copy-and-pasting the contents of their thread.

Modded minecraft is a completely different thing; more different (from "java") than bedrock is.

Those are two of the most active areas on this entire forum, and there is an absolute, clear distinction between modded and unmodified. Merging them will make 1 single forum huge and a mixture of two totally different types of request.; a great many people use only unmodified, and have absolutely no interest in modded, and vice-versa; the challenges, the knowledge, the skillsets and the questions are completely different.

The reason to have separate forums is to make it easier for people who browse the forum to find threads that are relevant to them, however, in the case of Minecraft: Java Edition support, having the separate forums causes confusion amongst people posting about their support issues, we are regularly moving threads to the right support forum. The forum has a prefix system which we will enable to allow people to specify if their thread relates to a modded copy of Minecraft: Java Edition, or an unmodified Minecraft: Java Edition, and this can be used by people browsing the forum to determine if the thread is relevant to their area of expertise which is the only reason to have separate forums. Furthermore, although the Minecraft: Java Edition support forums are active, they are receiving single-digit new threads per day, so while this will increase the number of threads in one forum it will still be less than one new page of threads per day.
