posted a message on NEW HOPPERS ADDED TO MINECRAFT IN NEW UPDATE
I really like the hoppers, but I'm not fond of the fact that if you connect them to a double chest, they only will fill 1/2 of the chest!

one suggestion, don't let her play multiplayer, especially pvp, unless you have a mod to * out cuss words

Yeah, unless she figures it out on her own she won't be playing on any multiplayer server except for my LAN. Though last night after playing at my house she did call me up later in the evening and ask what the name of my multiplayer server was. :-) For a girl that claims to have a hard time reading she can certainly read what she wants to.

posted a message on What do you use your excess cobblestone/dirt/gravel/etc. for?
I typically use cobble and dirt while mining and exploring for bridges, structures, etc... Gravel rarely gets used, though I used large amounts of it in my latest city as part of the roads. Cobble also gets smelted for smooth stone and stone blocks. I like to get to the point where I have at least a full chest of each resource and after that I don't keep it. I put a little lava pit into my storage room to dump extras into, though it mostly gets used for zombie flesh.

posted a message on What's the most complex redstone device YOU'VE made?
So far the best thing I've created from scratch was my chicken farm. I copied the lava blade from GenerikB, but the rest of it is my design. I have a pond with chickens in it, water fed by four dispensers. Under that is signs with water under them. They push the eggs to the end, then they drop into another channel and eventually find their way to my storage room. When I push a button in the storage room to channel that the eggs drop into changes direction, and the water dispensers turn off. The chickens drop down and then flow into the alternate channel. They eventually make it into the lava blade. I then flip a switch on the lava blade and cook the chickens. After that's done I push the first button again and the dispensers at the top turn on again, and the directional change switches back over to the egg channel. The complex parts were the lava blade (again, copied from GenerikB) and T-Flip-Flop... the design of which just got easier with the new Redstone blocks!

My next project is to make a watermelon/pumpkin farm that will auto-harvest... and I'm not using a bud-switch or anything, I'm going to make it trigger off of my pig-farm. Whenever a pig walks over the pressure plate it will trigger the harvesting feature. I just hope they stay off of it long enough to grow some melons between triggers! Actually I'll probably build a reset trigger into it so it can't be activated again until a certain amount of time has passed.

posted a message on [The Egg Machine] (Automatic)
I've set up my farm to collect eggs for a while and then cook the chickens. Then I have to go make more chickens with all the eggs I've collected. The amount of eggs I collected in a short while with the hopper attached to a chest make me think that before the hopper I had hundreds of eggs that eventually de-spawned.

That's a good idea. I'll look for a custom training map. She has a mouse, but I find that she always defaults to the trackpad rather than use the mouse. That said she's only had the computer for a few weeks and isn't allowed to use it during the week while she's in school... so not much time for practicing... plus it crapped out (corrupted windows file) for a week until I could get around to fixing it.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas. I know that she is a little ahead of the curve having played the iOs version for a while now, but it doesn't really teach the crafting recipes, just the quantities right? And not even that if you play in creative, and most of her time was spent on creative mode I'm sure.

posted a message on Minecraft with Children
When I first got into Minecraft on my iPad I showed it to my niece (then 7 years old) and she loved it! She has been playing it on her mom's iPhone ever since. Fast forward. Now she's 8 and she had been bugging for a new computer so she could play "real" Minecraft, so for Christmas the family all went in together and got her a new laptop and got her all set up with her own Minecraft account and everything.

The issue I am seeing so far is that she has no idea how to play on survivor, and as a young child doesn't know how to find the resources to figure it out like adults can. She plays on creative and kind of gets it, though she uses the trackpad on the laptop and can't really figure out the mouse or how to properly use both buttons (she was too used to using her mom's Macbook and the side of the click didn't matter.)

Anyway, I spent a few hours playing on my LAN with her last night and was able to show her a few things, but it doesn't seem like she's really getting it.

Any suggestions on how to get kids started in playing full Minecraft on survival mode?

P.S. She knows YouTube and watches some Minecraft videos. I suppose I can point her to some of the "this is what you do when you first start a world" type of videos.

posted a message on Replacing my Nether file?
    Quote from BC_Programming

Single Player/Offline worlds are stored in the appropriate "world" folder; the end and Nether are in separate folders beneath that.

Just to be clear here, if I want to reset my Nether and have it re-generate, then all I have to do is delete the files in the Nether sub-folder of my World folder? Or is there a specific file I have to delete?

    Thanks.

posted a message on How to retrieve items from a minecart with a hopper?
    Quote from Alizona

When someone can show me how all this new stuff can all automate mining and storage then I'll be excited.

I don't know about the mining aspect, but it can certainly automate storage. You just have to have a series of chutes with hoppers attached to chests at the bottom. Then run water channels to each chute for each chest. Granted, this isn't the most elegant method, but it would certainly work. The problem for me is that I have... 24 chests in my storage room, so 24 water channels and chutes is going to be a serious challenge to keep sorted out... especially since my storage room isn't all that deep. We'll see how it all works out though.

posted a message on Hoppers are really cool!
I think the far easier approach is to use a waterway to move the items into a drop that falls into one hopper attached to a chest.

I haven't had the chance to play with them yet, what happens if a live chicken falls into a hopper? (or any other mob for that matter?)

posted a message on Minecraft pulled us in...
Welcome to the game! "one of us, one of us!"

Anyway, I found that my PC wasn't capable of running a server, so to play with my friend in Oregon and another friend locally, I set up a LAN system using Hamachi. It sucks in that you can't log on and play whenever you want, but it's better than nothing.

That's the beauty of this game. There is always something different that you could do. In my current world I'm focused on improving a town. My friend found a Mooshroom biome and built a 2800 block railroad through the Nether to get back and forth to it.

So I have a couple of questions:

First, why does lava not flow? It just seems to me to be a regular part of the game, and as such I feel it should be left in it's natural setting. Also, I have some contraptions that use flowing lava that I like to build and they won't work unless that's the case.

Second, please tell me that you are going to upgrade to 1.3 when the official upgrade is released? I got used to the latest snapshots before starting this server, and I have to say that I like it much better. If you aren't planning on upgrading, then I may bail.

Oh, and why disable the /tell command for regular players? It worked fine the other day and now I don't have permission to use it or something.

Finally, has anyone found a slime chunk and set up a farm? If so are you willing to sell/trade slime balls?

Other than those things I'm really liking this server. Thanks!

Why you want to be a part of this server: Fairly new to Minecraft, my friend and I started a small server but we don't have the proper machines to run it, so we are looking for a fairly new world/server in which we can establish a good presence (rather than having to fight for space). Not interested in drama, grieving, etc... and am a little worried about joining the bigger/older servers.

My friend's IGN is pjungwirth, but I don't know that he has an account here. He is the same age as me, and is in Oregon. If possible to get him whitelisted, I could give him the IP.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

P.S. Do you run it with the snapshots, or do you stick to the official release?
