My first death was from a hoard of zombies before I learned you need a shelter... My GF's first death was when she got a surprise hug from behind by a creeper, as I was telling her "when we go down that pathway you gotta watch out for the evil mobs..." in both situations we just laughed it off
dying in minecraft has always been hilarious to me. Even when I lost all my iron picks or when I was rushing towards my house with 9 pumpkins (the first pumpkins I'd ever found) in the middle of the night with no torches, a good 400 blocks of nothing but rolling tundra and about 50 zombies and skeles. (course after I met my inevitably doom and rushed back out - with no equipment - to retrieve the dropped pumpkins while it was still night, but dawn came around when I found my body and all was not lost )
It's a game, and the deaths make it a truly fun game. (my death count right now is easily past 100, I like cave exploration with minimal torches and no sword)
Alot of people have been having this "black screen of death". My girlfriend and I have been playing SMP for awhile on our private server, I run a very similar build to your pc and had the black screen after 30-40 minutes of play in version 1.3. come 1.4 I would black screen after 5 minutes.
The best fix I've found so far (played 2.5 hours saturday and never black screened) was to play "in browser". I'm not sure why, but java seems to run minecraft more stable from www.minecraft.net in your browser than from the executable. You can't force it to fullscreen, but at least it doesn't crash.
