Just finished Calamity Canyon - what a fantastic map! I found the areas to be the perfect length, and the last few dungeons were challenging enough to feel difficult, without being an annoying slog. My favorites were Dungeons #5 and #7, although #6 deserves honorable mention just for appearing so menacing from a distance. I was legitimately terrified just walking over there! This is definitely my favorite CTM map I have played, hands down.

I found this a bit outside the spawn area (under 1000 blocks away). This should make someone quite happy :D

Why Vanilla Survival?: Well, often I have an itch to play vanilla, but I just can't seem to start a single player world and get anything done, and besides, I think we can all agree that multiplayer is SOOO much better. I like vanilla because there's a lot more freedom and more to do. For example minecart tracks and the like are rendered quite useless with bukkit's teleporting. Survival, because what's the point of building cool farms and houses if you don't need them?
I used to play on a survival server with some friends irl, but that ended up dying out... :(
    Why Should We Accept You?:
Well, first of all, you need good members to make the server a fun place. What's a server if no one interacts with one another? Also, I love building community stuff, and will probably live in the spawn village indefinitely. To be perfectly honest, I probably won't be the most active member on the server (at least I hope) because my life is fairly busy. But when I am on, I'm always up to chat and check out people's creations!

    Redstoning Ability:
Above average. I'm not the most amazing redstoner, not even close to people like Etho or the Zipkrowd guys, but I can make some stuff, like automatic farms or 2x2 flush hidden doors. And I make them myself, not looking them up on the internet.
    Building Ability:
Above average. I like to build things out of the ordinary for minecraft. While you're all making your castles and mansions, I'll be chillin' in my African resort B)
    Farming Ability:
Not really sure what to put here... I like building farms??? They're essential to any minecraft base. I'm usually the guy who builds the enderman farm on servers I've been on in the past.
    Mining Ability
I know the most efficient ways to mine, but overall I HATE mining. It's my least favorite thing to do. Chances are, I'll be the guy who actually buys from those shops that sell diamonds, coal, etc. :P At least your server economy won't be stagnant...
Teamwork Prowess: Yay teamwork!! I like building with people and helping to develop things around spawn. I'd say I'm a pretty good team member. I really hate it when people travel like 10,000 blocks out and build their base :/ (to be fair, I sometimes end up going 1,000 blocks out, only because I like to theme my base around certain biomes. I won't be doing this here, however, since I assume there will actually be stuff in the spawn.)

Now regarding Keepinventory, I feel it's best to have it false and up to the player to turn it on if they can't handle the difficulty of the map or just for several areas.
After all one of the purpose is to survive and fight for your ressources and gear!

Yes, but there are 2 problems with that. By the time you will want to turn it on, you will already have lost all your good stuff. Also, it's like difficulty. Players have no idea what they will enjoy the most from the outside, and if they choose incorrectly, they won't have faith in you and switch their difficulty. They'll just quit the map.

You don't lose your items when you die in the Last of Us, do you?
That's the main problem I could see with the upgrades being enchantments. I find that CTM maps tend to be better when they supply, well, SUPPLIES, rather than better weapons or gear that are just in a chest. If you get an iron sword with sharpness 4, it's good, but only until you die and lose it, or it breaks. Then the gameplay that the mapper put in that is balanced around you having the sword is just ruined. If you find a giant iron ore deposit, however, you get iron armor and an iron sword guaranteed for the rest of the map. That's why (I assume) the top map makers like to give the player ridiculous amounts of ore when they give it out. It's like you're upgrading the player with a better tool tier. You can rely on the player having certain things.

I do think it would be cool to see a CTM with keepInventory on by default that uses this system, though. If it's done right :D

posted a message on What do you look for in a server?
The actual content can vary, but for a typical small server, I look for players that are active and chat a lot. Also, I look for the server to have normal players, NOT a ton of staff. Preferably, there would be only 2 or 3 admins AT MOST.

I keep having problems with Super Hostile maps in MC 1.8.1. The fleecy chests may or may not actually appear if I started up the map in Full Release 1.8.1, and Inferno Mines simply won't load and crashes MC past 1.6! I've tried this on multiple computers. What can I do? I really want to use 1.8.

Play another, better CTM that has been released for 1.8 and is balanced for the current version of minecraft.

@Garfield2436: I'll look into that issue with the ghasts, but at the moment I can't think of any good solutions. If I think of something viable I may make an attempt to fix it.

    You could remove them.

posted a message on What is the Average Age of a Minecraft Player? Poll
I really doubt that the average minecraft player would be posting on the forums. I've seen plenty of minecrafters under the age of 9, and if they had responsible parents, they wouldn't be on this site.

I personally think they should actually implement that feature from the April Fools Day update where if you typed "herobrine" into the chat it would show up as nothing. Same with the /say feature of command blocks.

I have to agree with Apollo here. I believe players should be able to play the way the want to and if they decide to "cheat" on a part of the map because they just can't deal with the difficulty it shouldn't be your concern. Most players will still go through your map the way you intended it.
Now if you really need/want to nerf that, no matter the reason, I thing it should be restricted to a particular area and obviously the player should be informed ^_^

I also have to agree. Not only does it take away some of the depth that minecraft itself offers, it doesn't allow the map to be accessible to as many players. It takes away a tool that players can use to make the map easier for themselves. Think of it this way. Would you rather someone cheese an area or 2 on your map and really enjoy it, or ragequit because an area is too difficult?

Also, how often do you really use enderpearls in a CTM? I think the only time I've used an enderpearl "cheaply" is the last area of Kaizo Caverns, and even then, it made me feel good because I outsmarted what seemed like an unconquerable room. Other than that, I used them mostly as a last ditch effort to avoid dying and losing all my stuff. Boy, did it feel epic when I fell into the void in Pinnacle Catacombs, but managed to twist around mid fall and throw an enderpearl back to the starting platform and survive.

Don't take away depth from the game. It just makes players not want to play the map.

posted a message on Copyright Infringement on a Minecraft Server?
    Quote from odst4eva»
I should probably clarify that I am not using an old version of the map, just the spawn. All buildings have been heavily modified, if not replaced completely. I haven't been able to get an answer about whether they own any trademarks or copyrights. I kind of figured it's just threats coming from people who don't know what they're talking about. I also don't know the exact details of the servers sale. Though I do know that the original owner who sold it has said that there is basically nothing they can do.

Just build a new spawn if you're really concerned about it. Then, he has no right to claim copyright infringement.

CTMs have always been about aesthetics. Otherwise, why would Vechs have made each area in Kaizo look different? He could have just made all the areas identical, or made it so there were no unique areas at all. It could have all been set in vanilla Minecraft caves with no variation. But he knew, like his players, that that would be boring. He wanted people to be in awe of Cavern of Sky. He wanted there to be a distinctly different atmosphere in Spine Forest.

Okay, Kaizo isn't the most amazing looking map in the world. However, to say that aesthetics didn't matter in the old days is a bit ridiculous. Like Fang said, they've just evolved now. But making custom maps look nice has always been a big deal. It's just a bigger deal now that technology has advanced.

A map doesn't have to use a ton of block variation and cool architecture to have a good atmosphere though ;)
