posted a message on Elytra should be repaired by Dragon's Breath instead of Leather (Balancing)

    No support.

For the record, I found Elytra maintenance so annoying (and so rare) that I built a command-block shrine on the only End-City boat we've found on our server that gives any player that touches it an unbreakable Elytra. So they still need to get to the End and find that city, but once they've done that, they can actually enjoy it instead of worrying about it. Also so that more than one person on our server could play with them.

As an Op, I spent several hours in creative mode cruising the End looking for End City ships, and never found another one. It still seems incredibly dumb to introduce an item (with an entire flight mechanic) and then put so many ridiculous limits on it AND make it so rare that it is impossible to have one until after spending several hours in the End. Or days, if one is unlucky.

posted a message on A solution (albeit difficult) to solve Minecraft's feature problem.

Well, you've got your wish, because they're already doing it. Instead of calling it Minecraft 2.0, though, they decided to call it Minecraft Win 10 edition. It is all the fun of Minecraft, but it isn't built on java, seems to have better coding (they've fixed bugs that have been in java MC so long we consider them features), and they're developing it in parallel to the java MC. It also seems to run better. Unfortunately, I'm under the impression is may be harder to mod. It also hasn't reached full feature parity with java MC yet, but it is getting close. Of course it has a range of other things that annoy me about it. (having to pay for skins, harder to mod, not Linux or MacOS compatible...) The biggest reason for not using it, however, is the inability to run my own stand-alone server with the world we've been building on for several years.

posted a message on Is Minecraft virtual reality a good or a bad thing?

So far, I don't see VR players as having any particular advantage over other players. It'd be neat to try out, but for now I consider the VR to be just another mod among the thousands out there. A high end, Mojang developed mod, but still a non-standard way to play nonetheless.

Personally, I think it is an interesting concept, and I look forward to trying it out, but the price of good quality VR gear (both the headsets and the GPU's to run them) needs to come down a lot before I'll consider them to be worth purchasing.

posted a message on Does anyone else miss the old days of Minecraft?

Do I miss the "good old days" of Minecraft? No, no I do not. While not all the changes have been positive, I have very much enjoyed all the new things they've added.

Particularly Elytra. Elytra given with the "Unbreakable" ability has almost eliminated the use of the command-block teleporter network we had for getting around the server I'm on, and enabled all sorts of other fun ways to explore the game. (Yeah, we've got minecart networks too, but those are boring, hard on the eyes, prone to lag, and sometimes physical crashes.)

The combat change was a wash for me. Not terrible, not good, it did make killing things a bit harder, whatever.

But yeah, at the end of the day, I will greet each update with optimism and cheer, and happily let MC keep itself up to date with the latest from Mojang.

Here's to crafting into the future!

posted a message on help, new player

Unfortunatley, that's probably true. Your best bet for finding someone to play with is probably your son's friends or relatives of people you know. (co-worker's kids, friends, etc). It might be harder to find people that way, but at least they will be people you know. Sadly, it is really hard to find groups of people that are reputable, friendly, and honest.

That being said, if you are set on finding people online, I would go over to the server forum and look for a server advertising "co-operative play" and "no PVP". Those servers will probably have fewer problematic people, but still no guarantees.

    - Build a disposal chute (using cactus or lava)

    - Build a small fountain to decorate a hallway somewhere in your base

    - Try to build a build a base into a mountain, with windows, but without turning it into just another castle.

    - Build a secret base beneath a tree, and build the entrance into the tree somehow, but keeping it hidden/secret.

    - Build an underwater base.

    - Build a hot tub

    - Write a message in the landscape that will only be visible to someone flying high above it.

    Ooh,

    - Make a banner for yourself. Ideally, one unique to yourself, but any sort of banner that you would like to have works.

    - Play with fireworks. Make a fireworks display and set it off sometime. Lots of fun. (helps to have a mob farm for gunpowder to do this)

    lol.

On the simpler side of things, there is simply building a fountain. Very simple additions, but they can make a place feel much more interesting.

Rather amusing. I particularly like the creepers. :)

You know, it would be fun if they left that in as an easter egg of sorts.... Kind of like the killer bunny: 1 out of every hundred creepers actually explodes like these ones do instead of normal.
