We are the curious ones. We are the ones that explore. We are the tinkerers. We don't look at the code to find our answers, but instead use a real-world approach of testing and exploration and thought. We work together, asking questions, and taking nothing for granted. We do not require experience for people to join, just curiosity. Methods and structure can always be taught; creativity and curiosity, much of the time, just are.

Divisions are meant as work teams. These are people likely to be knowledgeable and curious about the same things you are, that you can ask to work with on studies. You can of course do things solo, but it's more fun with everybody else, especially for larger studies that can be more tedious. These are not limitations. Feel free to work with those of other divisions, just understand where people's strengths will lie.

For those who are interested in joining
You will need to fill out a short application, and then chat with a leader of the group, to be asked a final question or two, and placed into a division. The questions will simply relate to your experience level and to make sure you became familiar with the way we do things as shown in the original posts. Your experience level will not factor into acceptance, but your familiarity with the original posts will. Obviously this is the internet. You can look up the answers, that's not the point. We just want every member that comes in to have a basic knowledge of how we work, no matter when/how you learned it.

    A few rules:
    --Don't swear
--Be active (this includes discussion, does not require constant studies, everybody runs out of ideas eventually)
    --Respect the other members

    Application
    In Game Name:
Why do you want to join?
What division would you like to join?
How often will you be able to work on studies a week?
What experience do you have in research? (not a deciding factor)
Will you follow our rules? (see above)

Please submit the above within this thread, and contact one of the leaders. They will read over your application, ask you a few friendly questions about your experience, what you'd like to do with us, and make sure you've read everything you need to. They will then tell WhisperingSiren of their decision, and she will add you to your division if you're accepted.

Study Format (other than Theoretical where impossible)
    Question:
    Hypothesis:
    Study Methods:
    Results:
    Conclusion:
Ideas for research based on these results (if any):

If you are submitting a study for the Theoretical Division
Because the nature of your studies will sometimes make it nearly impossible to test, but more exercises in thought, simply put your thoughts in such a way that we understand where you started, what you originally thought, and what you decided in the end. If there is no evolution of thought, even the type which has just found more evidence to support your beliefs, then it will be considered a study idea, rather than a study. The purpose of studies is to advance thought, advance what we know. This will serve to separate the study ideas of all divisions and the actual studies of this one, as otherwise they will look nearly the same. For my sake, if you could also write the fact you meant a post as a study, I would appreciate it. Thanks all!

posted a message on House building ideas
    1) A bathroom for each building, or if you're being farther back than that, an outhouse every once in a while. (Usually overlooked structure)

    2) An art studio complete with artist's flat attached. Has all the items required to build statues, including all dyes and wool, and is built with all sorts of blocks, and has a different mode of going from one floor to the next than normal (mine I made a tree that spiraled upwards with a waterfall down the middle for both stairs and water elevator at the same time) Don't forget the leaves outside the main walking area :wink.gif:

    3) A house made completely of fences and fence gates, with glowstone for lighting (I'll make it later and show you, but I've seen other people do it before, it's cool)

    4) An underwater house whose side walls are made entirely of sugar canes (can totally be done)

    5) an underground cavern, flat and massive, that holds all of your farms in it

    6) conversely, a floating sky farm that makes all its materials fall in a waterfall to you :smile.gif:

    7) an underground arboretum (tree preserve)

    8) A huge tree, with housing inside it, whose only entrance is a Well of Fates (where if you know the way you're fine, if you don't, you drown) and a secret entrance from far, far away underground

That's all I've thought of so far. Good luck!

EDIT: An aqueduct is always popular, but if you instead build it to hold lava, you could light your entire town through clever (and tall) lava aqueducts, similar to roman oil trenches lighting a whole room.

    Quote from Cybercossack

to be honest just a basic run down of setting up a basic track would be good I think

That I can actually help you with. So, say you're simply trying to go in a straight line, say, 20 meters (I know silly, but it's easy to make bigger). And say this was all flat area, let's go ahead and say it's REALLY easy and it's just a flat world aboveground. No slopes, no width worry.

    1) Lay down a booster track where you want to begin. It will begin as unpowered until you've connected it to an activated redstone piece, device, or a redstone torch.

    2) Place a block behind the booster track, in the opposite direction from where you want to go

    3) Place a button next to the booster track on either side

    4) Lay down 6 pieces of regular rail in the direction you are wishing to go

    5) Place another booster, and a redstone torch beside it

    6) repeat 4&5 until you've gotten to your destination, ending with a booster track, but without the torch

    7) place a button next to the last booster track, and a block at the end of the track

To test, put a minecart on the booster track at the end, get in, and press the button.

Now the way booster tracks work, is that they propel you in a direction based on a few rules. First, if you are already going in a direction, it will make you keep going in that direction. Second, if you're still, and a block is on one end of the track, it will propel you away from the block (see what we did there?). Next, it's based I believe on the directions, and different directions will take precedence over others. Read the wiki for more details, just the article on booster rails.

If the area isn't all flat, then you have to simply change the spacing of the rails, and make sure that there's plenty of room for the minecart to get where it needs to go. For uphills, put booster tracks closer together, for downhills, farther apart. If you have a dip, the minecart will crash into the uphill part if the bottom isn't at least I think 4-5 pieces of track. Also remember to keep at least 3 spaces wide for the minecart at all times, and 3 spaces tall (for having you in it), and then also give a little extra around turns. If you have any problems with trying this, just let me know :wink.gif:

posted a message on 1.8.1 CRASHING
Hey guys, I think if you read the Support Subforum's pinned threads, especially the ones about common problems and their solutions, you would get your problems solved quicker and probably better. Generally this type of topic belongs in that section, or if you are more emphasizing 1.8 stuff, the 1.8 discussion forum. Hope it all gets worked out.

posted a message on Help to be a better builder.
The first vital thing is always to begin with an idea. Before you ever begin to build, you need to know exactly what you're going to use each area for, how you want to be able to move through the building, and what types of aesthetics you want. As said previous, it's best to then put all of these ideas into a diagram. I use excel, generally, for anything close to 2D, and for layout plans and such for 3D structures. I just make all the cells square, and use the background highlighter to put in the various blocks. There are also some specialized pixelart programs, and if you lower the pixel size of paint.net or any of those enough and only use pencil, you get the same thing. I use excel for the ease of counting the squares of each material afterwards. This step is important, because sometimes what is perfectly possible and awesome even in your head... isn't. One room actually converges into the next, the stairs lead to a wall... whatever.

Don't be afraid to revise the diagram many times, as you get ideas or just to tweak things to make them better. It's easier to change them on the plans by far than it is to go around and change them in the actual building, and if you don't have op powers or Too Many Items or something, you can avoid using resources you don't need to for tools.

That's about it on the actual building. If you need help on the creativity side, there are a lot of exercises that you can do. One such exercise would be to take some paper, pencils, and a friend, and draw a picture together, each of you alternating adding one element at a time. It really doesn't matter if you guys can only draw stick people, it still works. It will add the other person's ideas to your own, in a way, stretching what you currently think of.

Another is to be given a random assortment of blocks by a friend, and with only those blocks, build whatever you can. A limited amount of stone, or "normal" building blocks is best, and needing to use a certain amount of them as well. Repeat this a few times with the same blocks, going for something completely different each time. This does not need to be a building even per se, if you feel like doing pixel art or whatever else, that works too, as long as you're just using the blocks provided.

There is, of course, cloudgazing. Take a picture of a cloud. Try to think of as many things as it could be as possible.

In the end, creativity is about seeing possibilities. Any exercise that makes you stretch what you think is possible, is generally going to help.

    posted a message on Dungeons
    Quote from nickguletskii

You might want to go back to WoW, because dungeons are parallelepipeds and only hold some useless loot.

You really don't need to be like that, he's a newbie, welcome him.

Dungeons are generated randomly in the map (I've found one that was all by its lonesome, not connected to anything at all, right beneath the sea floor when I was digging for something), and will always contain the same things:

The walls are made of cobblestone. This, and where water has flowed into lava flows, are the only naturally occurring cobblestone. The room is perfectly square, and there will be 1 opening of the dungeon generally to a cave (even the one that was by its lonesome had a jut out for a few blocks that seemed to be generated with it).

The floor is made of a combination of cobblestone and mossy cobble. Mossy cobblestone (the only naturally occurring block with green on it other than grass) only comes from dungeons. There is no way to craft it or otherwise find it.

There will be 2 small chests (or, rarely, one large chest), each with a few items in them. Things that can only be gotten this way include saddles to ride pigs, cocoa beans for dye and cookies, and one of the types of music disc (the other music disc can also be found here, but can also be gotten with a weird glitch where you make a skeleton kill a creeper).

There will be a monster spawner. This looks like a 1 block large cage of sorts, and will have a spinning object in it, as well as fire (although this won't burn you). As the name implies, this is responsible for spawning monsters in the area. It can only do so in darkness though, so as soon as you can put something that casts light down next to it, whether it be torch or lava or fire, whatever, you can make it stop spawning in the area. Try to light the whole dungeon area. Then, to be completely sure, destroy the spawner with a pickaxe. It will take a while of holding down the left button on the mouse, but it will eventually break the spawner and you'll be safe.

As the above suggests, there will be monsters. The most common monster spawner is a zombie one. Any spawner can only spawn one type of mob, and rarely will other types of mobs spawn in the same area even when it's dark enough for them to do so normally. Zombies are slow, but don't let them corner you. What I like to do is to get on the opposite side of the dungeon from the entrance, on the outside, and make a 1 block hole. I shoot arrows until I have enough room to put down light to stop more from spawning, and then shoot the rest or come in with a sword to finish it. Destroy the spawner, loot the room (including the flooring and the chests themselves) and enjoy your loot and the experience of adventure :wink.gif: Also, if you come by a creeper dungeon (this is extremely rare) just leave it be. The dungeon literally destroys itself if you try to go in it. Spiders can crawl through a 2 wide 1 tall, but not a 2 tall 1 wide, hole. sword them where they can't do anything about it.

    Hope this helps!
