Thanks for the help! My problem - problems - seem to be history, though I'm not entirely sure why.
I did update the drivers. Just after I posted that last message, I received an email about the update, so I did it then. I didn't expect much difference, since my drivers were pretty new, so I didn't check right away. But that might have been it.
The problem with invisible chickens appears to have been due to Overwolf, a TeamSpeak overlay program (among other things). Note that I'm playing single-player, so TeamSpeak wasn't even on. And I had Overwolf turned off. It was not supposed to be starting with Windows, and it was not supposed to be starting automatically when I played a game.
Yet, when I pushed F11 in Minecraft (to toggle full-screen mode), it took a screenshot in Overwolf, instead. I had to completely uninstall Overwolf to stop that,... and after that, chickens were visible again, and so was my character. Funny, huh?
The thick black bar around the horizon was still there, but I only saw it when I could see into the distance. Thus, I wouldn't notice anything underground or even in a forested area. All of a sudden, yesterday, I noticed that it wasn't there. Everything seems to be working fine now. It might have been the driver. I can't think of anything else.
Anyway, thanks for the help. This problem is resolved.
First, here's my DxDiag.txt. (I hope it means more to you than it does to me!)

I've apparently solved the screen-on-acid problem, though I don't exactly know how. I just fiddled with the video options awhile. (Note that lowering the render distance even to 8 chunks didn't help, and 16 chunks is the maximum in my Options, anyway.)
After trying other settings, I've still got the graphics set to "fancy," and the render distance to 16 chunks. But I lowered the max framerate to 60 fps, and VSync is "on." (According to the wiki, those two settings seem to do the same thing, don't they? I guess I don't understand why both are listed.)
I lowered the lighting to "minimum" and the Mipmap Levels to 3 (again, just trying all sorts of things). Also, I turned "Use VBOs" to "on," although I don't have the slightest idea of what that even means. Eventually, though, the crazy mess on the screen settled down.
However, I've still got invisible chickens, and the only part of my character that shows up on any screen is his right arm. Sheep, cattle, horses, and rabbits do show up on the screen. (I'm not sure about hostile mobs, because I turned the difficulty to "peaceful" while I was trying to get this sorted out.)
Edit: OK, I have no idea what's going on, because I haven't changed a thing. But today, when I got into the game, chickens are no longer invisible, and my character shows up fully, too. So there's another problem fixed,... somehow. Still the original problem, though.
Also, that black area around the horizon - the distant horizon - is still there. If I'm somewhere without a long view distance, everything (except me and the chickens, of course) is fine. But not if I can see some distance.
When I turn the view distance down to 8 chunks, it actually gets worse. It turns into a thick black bar a bit above the horizon. In both cases it flickers. Sometimes, it disappears briefly and looks normal, but just very briefly. (And the flickering is as annoying as the black it replaces.)
I really don't understand this, because the game has always run well for me - even on this very same computer. But it was still in beta back then. It's been two years since I've played it.
Here's another weird thing: My character's right arm is the only part of him that shows up in inventory or when I change the view to 3rd person.
When I entered the game today, in my brand-new world, the whole thing was a complete mess. I appeared to be seeing multiple levels flashing into view, mixed with complete black. I couldn't even tell where I was. I fiddled with the graphic settings awhile, and eventually - I don't know how - got it to look more or less normal (but still with that thick black area around the horizon, flashing into view occasionally, but just briefly).
After that, I noticed that only my arm (and whatever I'm holding with that hand) is showing up. The rest of me seems to be invisible. (Chickens are invisible, too, apparently. I can hear them, see their little round shadows, and get eggs from them occasionally, but that's all.) I never had this kind of trouble with Minecraft previously (well, rare graphic glitches that never lasted long), so I don't have a clue what's going on. Does anyone else here?
I've been playing Minecraft, off and on, since 2010, with no problems. I haven't played just recently, but I have played it with this computer, again with no problems at all.
But it's been a couple of years, so I thought I'd try the new version. Now, when I try to play the game, there's a black horizon - or a thick black bar near the horizon - all around me, in the distance. Occasionally, it flashes and shows terrain, briefly. But it's very distracting and very annoying.
I deleted the entire .minecraft folder, downloaded the new launcher, created another new world, and tried again, completely from scratch. But it's still there. I've set the render distance at various points from 8 to 16, but I've still got that black horizon (at 8, it seems to be a thick black line just above the horizon, but I didn't spend much time with that).
Previously, my computer has had no trouble playing this game or any other game I've tried - at high graphics settings. I've got an ATI Radeon HD7970 graphics card, and the drivers are up to date. I've got 16GB of RAM, and I'm using Windows 7. But again, I've played the game previously on this same computer with never any problems. (Admittedly, it was an earlier version of the game.)
Any ideas? Really, I've never had any trouble playing Minecraft. Now, all of a sudden, I do.
Some time ago, in an earlier version of Minecraft, I wanted to build a house on the top of a tall cliff, so I created a few worlds until I found one with the terrain I wanted near my spawn point. But now I'd like to try something different, on the same world (if possible).
So far, in looking around, I seem to have an archipelago world - lots of water everywhere, with relatively small patches of land, almost all of it marsh, desert, or sheer cliffs. It doesn't seem to vary much, but maybe I just haven't gone far enough.
My question is this: If I keep looking, will I find a continent with flat, dry land? Does every Minecraft world have all terrain types? Or could I actually have an archipelago world in truth, one with more water than land?
I'm just wondering how the world generation works, how varied worlds actually are - and whether I'm probably going to need to create a new world to get the place I want, or just look further in this one. Thanks.
OK, I just died this way. It surprised the heck out of me, because I couldn't figure out what happened. I'd taken my boat out across the ocean, a long way away, and I was just coming back. I slowed way down when I got to the boathouse and rode the boat up onto the half-blocks,... and instantly died. My boat wasn't harmed in the slightest.
I'm far from an expert in Minecraft. I've never even seen Soul Sand, and I don't understand what you're doing with that hatch. Really, all I want is a simple way to keep my boat where it won't float away - and something where I can sail into dock without taking absurd precautions. Does anyone have a SIMPLE solution to this?
Or something you could explain to a simple-minded guy? :smile.gif:
PS. Apparently, this has been bugged for a long time, huh? I'm surprised it hasn't been fixed by now.
No idea, but I've started having the same problem, too. I'm also running Windows XP, and I've NEVER used a mod of any kind.
The Minecraft screen goes black, and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get the application window and close it that way. When I do, it tells me that Javaw.exe has locked up.
Today, I'd started a new world, just to show someone the game. My character was just standing around as it got dark, because I wanted to show them the monsters,... but then it got REALLY dark. Heh, heh.
At any rate, this is a real pain, especially since I don't usually save the game very often. There's nothing new been installed on my computer, either (although I do get automatic Java updates occasionally).
I'm a complete newbie, so maybe this is easily explained. But when I started this game, I dug into a cliff face where there was coal and just continued to dig there. It's in a pleasant valley, with a nice waterfall. And I don't have torches outside. But I don't think that I've ever seen or heard a hostile mob in that valley. (I've only been playing for a few days.)
I dug straight through the cliff, quite a long distance, and at the end of that, there were plenty of hostile mobs. So why is there such a big difference?
Later, I decided to build an above-ground fortress closer to the shore (and quite close to my spawn point). It's been fun, particularly since the area is just mob-city at night. Spiders, zombies, skeletons, creepers - they're all out in large numbers, every night. The difference between that location and my peaceful valley is just astounding.
Is that because there are underground caverns at the mob-city location? I can often hear them, even during the day, while I never hear anything at "peaceful valley." Or does an above-ground fortress just draw them more than a dug-out mine?
Noob question: Does a tree die if it's not connected to the ground? If I cut the trunk but leave floating branches with leaves on them will it die, will it continue growing or will it just stay there?
I'm a complete newbie myself, but from what I've read, the leaves will slowly disintegrate. As they do, they'll tend to drop saplings which will grow into new trees.

If I'm somewhere without a long view distance, everything
(except me and the chickens, of course)is fine.
Thanks for the reply. Any ideas?

OK, thanks! I'll keep exploring, then.

Thanks.

Heh, heh. I don't even know what the "in browser version" is.

I'm a complete newbie myself, but from what I've read, the leaves will slowly disintegrate. As they do, they'll tend to drop saplings which will grow into new trees.
