    Age: 16

    In Game Name: Fexlom

Where you heard of ONA: The guide "The Art of War". It was the thing that got me interested in MC warfare.

Previous Clans: None in MC, quite a few in other games.

Why you wish to join ONA: I want to learn fighting better in MC, and this seems like a good clan for it.

Where you think you will fit in best: I'm good with redstone, but I can handle swords and bows too. I am also an OK builder.

Do you play any of these games [Battlefield Bad Company 2, League of Legends, Pokémon]: I have played League of Legends and Pokémon. I played Pokémon as very young and I recently quit League of Legends to have more time to play Minecraft.

If you were an animal... what animal would you be: A cat, because they are quick, agile, and deadly even if they can be soft and harmless too.

I, Fexlom understand that if I am not actively communicating with the clan [IRC, Forum, TS, etc...] I will be removed due to inactivity: Yes, I do understand that.

I have been in the Mumble channel and confirmed I have a microphone.

EDIT: Sorry for doublepost, accidentally posted as a guest first

This isn't an exact quote, but it's close enough. Holy crap, even if it's not infinite who in their right mind is going to go that far?

    Day 52

After weeks of trecking over mountains and across oceans, there is still no end in sight. People called me crazy when I said I would travel to the end of this world, but I will show them all wrong! There must be an Edge and something beyond, and I WILL reach it.

I've noticed something odd, though, just recently: water seems to have stopped flowing. Holes do not fill and excavated water will simply float in the air. What can it mean?

    Day 74

I have reached an edge, but not the Edge. Soil has been replaced with bare rock that stretches out in front of me, seemingly featureless. I must collect more food and water before pressing on. I am getting closer though, I can feel it!

    Day... 88?

Supplies are low. Bare rock in all directions. Air feels... heavier somehow. And ahead, there's some kind of light, hurts to look at it. Must keep going...

    Day ???

    My God.

    It's full of stars.

Uh, I want no money. I think usable items will do just fine. It takes a lot of people to sustain the value of money. Too many to fit in a SM game. The value would always be changing, and you would not even know it. It would be impossible to put a value on things.

I think trade would be acceptable though.

Trade, definately. And the accompanying ninja thieves, raiding parties and fringe crazies in their hidden diamond mines who emerge every so often to freely give away resources like a reverse C. M. Burns...

I think an actual game mechanic enforcing anything in the way of economy (excepting possibly a trading interface and the ability to create currency) would stifle a lot of what makes being a merchant fun.

Player made economies are, from my experience, always superior to economies enforced by the game itself.

I'll draw from my experience from another indie game, Haven & Hearth, as an example:

    <rest of post>

Your post more-or-less sums up what I was going to say (but I'm going to say it anyway, took me bloody ages to type it up on my phone!). I don't think Notch is going to implement currency or a proper economic system, he's said before that he wants Minecraft to be accessible to as many people as possible.

There's another mmo called Realm of a Mad God that has absolutely no framework for an economy in place but that doesn't stop players from giving away or trading items they don't need/want. Given Minecraft's balance of resources, I see every standard server evolving it's own version of a rough barter system.

Over time players will probably fall into certain patterns, like for instance prefering a system whereby players place signs with trading offers in a designated area (a Minecraft Craigslist, if you will) and waiting until someone responds. Or using arrows as an ad-hoc currency (hmm, must have a proper think about that one), each with a healthy dose of theft, scamming and murder. They're not perfect systems but they don't have to be, as long as they're fun. And if that's not to your liking, there'll likely be scores of heavily-policed rp economy servers to join instead.

I love how there is the potential for the map to inadvertently flood due one creeper explosion in one particular place.

You know, this could make for an interesting Survival Community map...

Perhaps the game calculates spawn rates based on the number of cubes in the highest layer of a generated map? I think Zuriki might be the best person to ask about this...

If no one is currently working on this, I'm going to take a turn and test a cliff-fort idea. If I don't post back within an hour presume something came up and skip my turn.

Ok done! Its not very impressive, just a long pillbox-style shelter cut into the cliff overlooking the bay. Entrances at either end, and steps leading up to the clifftop. Vulnerable to creepers at two places (not counting any that explode while above you...).

You're looking over at it when you start.

I think the mushrooms actually makes the map harder. By the time you get them all and come out of the tower a huge amount of enemies have spawned. By taking only three mushrooms and running like buggery I managed to get almost all the way up the white tower, before some skeletons fell on me and another hit me with an arrow WHILE HE WAS FALLING PAST when I was down to half a heart. This bloody map never lets me win. I love it.

Argh noo, I've just finished building a creeper-proof underwater breathing area/refuge! I suppose I can just do it again in Creative (built it in survival to make it more "fun")...

Oh never mind, too many things happening at the moment to build anything worthwhile.

Here's another community succession map converted to Survival Mode, originally started by... well actually I can't remember who it was as the old forums are now gone. There is a large castle (complete with catacombs and large pit underneath), a farm, tavernesque building, wizards tower and my windmill/cottage/outhouse on the far hill.

Here's my Town map I've been building for the sole purpose of Surviving (with a capital S!). It is still under work, but so far about one quarter of the map is already built. Features include wealthy quarter, police station, a walled off slum right next to the wealthy quarter, one big storage hall full of textile blocks you wouldn't otherwise find in the game save for houses.

    http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?user= ... maton&id=4

Also, as Ush pointed out, the huge settlement I started up is indeed a great map for this. The town really turns into a deathtrap thanks to its formerly idyllic position IN MIDDLE OF A VALLEY! (Boogiemen pour in from the hillsides and get caught inside the walls!)

Here's the last version I had of it. Differences to Ush's save are a ranch outside the city. Herd some pigs in there, will you?

    http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?user= ... maton&id=3

Aha, I had forgotten that there were more recent saves than mine. The community RP map works surprisingly well in Survival, perhaps because everyone followed rough RP rules when building and many people stockpiled resource blocks in their basements/attics. It's an entertaining challenge in itself to try to get to the Church and barricade yourself in (or maybe I'm just not that good at survival yet).

Thats a nice Town map you're making, I like how I can cross the map via roofs trees without having to touch the ground!
