I'm a big fan of the biomes. I'd much prefer them over weather/seasons, if only because the snow levels give my netbook a sad.
Not to mention I like exploring, so I'm more likely to see a lot of different biomes. I look forward to making lots of different bases in different biomes. People said I was mad, building a castle in a swamp...
The reason for the lack of fishing threads is that we don't have much information beyond what's in the /boo page. We don't even know if fish are mobs or just spawned when you fish. I keep hoping that fish will get their own info from Notch, since the community focuses on whatever the latest tidbit is (or torches on off-times).
How about something like "the Lost"? It fits in with the intriguingly nonspecific names that show up in modern fiction (like the Ways or the house). It dodges any religious connotations, while simultaneously suggesting we have a connection to it that we've long forgotten.
The various features are officially named by Notch. Updates and patch notes will refer to them by their proper names. Adminium is a special case of slang that existed before we found out the official name.
Seems like his priorities are as follows:
-Implement the specific features mentioned on the update page as quickly as possible.
-Fix bugs until release day.
I can see a griefer in SMP just standing around in hell, letting the virus spread all over the base there. Also, this is the kind of thing that could demand your attention the entire time you're there, especially if the spawn point is far enough away from your activities that the infection gets a serious foothold before you see it.
The point would be to allow the map to generate, from the start, with the new biomes.
Aside from this, there are plenty of players (myself included) who really enjoy the opening stages of the game. No base, no resources, just whatever you can throw together before the sun sets.
Also, some people want to try out finite-life torches from the start.
Please note the Torch megathread sticky at the top of the forum.
As to your question, existing torches will become lanterns on update day. Newly built bases with torches will run out of light eventually, and the possibility exists for monster spawns if you are inattentive. Placing lanterns will solve this issue.
I remember a while back notch did say that he wanted to add some regional items.
I was really excited by this because i've really enjoyed the hunt for clay on my current home server, it stimulates you to explore beyond your immediate locality.
I'd say that the core stuff in at the moment would have to be present in every biome.
However each biome would have a few special items in it. For example you might find an incredibly rare flower which will only grow under certain conditions in a certain biome. If you could replicate those conditions (green house or whatever) you might be able to cultivate it in your home biome.
The flowercan then be distilled it to protect you from poisons which those pesky tropical spiders have, you'll be prepared if Rumble from the Jungle comes a knocking with his spider poison arrows.
It could even be something relatively simple and aesthetic, like the desert provides limestone which means the cobble you get is unique to there. A certain mountain provides marble so in your limestone desert citadel you might pay your mate Jeff (who lives in the mountain halls) a chest of spices to give you some marble so you can make your royal baths out of it as a luxury item.
Ooh, now I want to make a few limestone structures (dolmen?) in the completely wrong region on our SMP server when nobody's on.
we can on ready make bread in the game and bread is use in real life to catch alot of fish you could put bread on the hook catch small fish with bread then use the small fish for bait for bigger fish then u can keep the big fish or go fishing with the big fish for even bigger fish
Ooh, I like the idea of smaller fish as bait for bigger ones. Fits in with fishing IRL and with how mining progresses in game.
My main preparation was to make sure I had a couple free save spots. I'm curious to see how the biomes work with a new map, and if you always have a grasslands-type spawn point.
And before the update, I'll probably make a few stacks of torches in my existing saves, just in case.

This. Maybe it's his implementation of fish?

Makes sense to me.
