Because of the Blocks/Items Shown in the Video
On the Left wall are Project Tables from RP2, an MFSU from IC2, an uncrafting table from the Twilight Forrest and an Applied Energistics Access Terminal
On the Back Wall a Forestry Thermionic Fabricator, a couple of ic2 machines and Buildcraft Hoppers on top of them
On the right are some Thermal Expansion Machines
On the Hotbar there's a Equivalent Exchange 3 Minium Stone and a Portal Gun
In the Chat at the end you can read messages from Thaumic Bees, Modular Force Field Systems and Applied Energistics
When the Guy dies he drops stuff from RP2, Thaumcraft 3, Minefactory Reloaded, XyCraft and Buildcraft.
I think one of the Machines in the Back and some of the Cans the guy drops are from GregTech, but I'm not sure about that.
Oh and the Torches are from XyCraft, too

:o ...Well played. Thank you for your time.

    Hey,
I know this is stupid, but I was browsing YouTube and found this video of a Minecraft mod:

It looks cool, but there isn't a link, a name, nothing. Does anyone know what mod this is?

    Thanks,
    Timmy-P

posted a message on Arrow trajectories mod? X-Ray for mobs?
My theory (which I can't prove) is that trajectory already exists, but Mojang made it invisible (which is fine). I think that if we can find the code responsible with this, then we can edit that specific file and make it appear.

But then it would be grounds for hacking, so you can't do it with SMP :(

Many people don't know anything about how copyrights work (it's not a magical barrier).

What about what some people said earlier, saying that your content is automatically protected by law upon creation?

You seem to know a lot about copyrights, please, enlighten us, oh master! :o

Ok, first and foremost, the double-post is fine. Contrary to popular belief, it is not against the rules. :D

Now, as for what you've said, while, yes, that's true, I'm not entirely sure what point you're trying to make. We've been discussing the (very) technical and legal aspects of mods and modpacks and the distribution of such but if you want to discuss a different aspect I'm game. :)

What I'm trying to get to is that if you can download a mod and run Minecraft from it, then it's pirated content, therefore illegal. Since it's not possible to run Minecraft with the mod with the base game of Minecraft, then if it were up to me, then these said mods would be completely legal to create and distribute, worry-free. That is, until someone uses your mod without your permission.

Okay, Instead of double-editing, I'll double-post so people know I posted.
Okay, so I was wrong about mods not containing code of MC, but the point I'm trying to get to is that It's impossible to download these mods and run Minecraft without the base game of Minecraft itself.

ModLoader, Forge, and BetterThanWolves are just three of the many examples of mods that most certainly do contain code from Minecraft.

    ...Whoops.

Point is, unless it requires pirated content, you should be fine, I guess.

EDIT: Okay, you got me there, but in the end, isn't it all Java?

You can tell I'm running out of material. :P

Except no, that is NOT how it works. You are breaking the ToS, there is no 2 ways about that if you mod the game in anyway that edits part of its code or assets and then distribute it.

You are talking about hacks. Mods do not contain any code from Minecraft. They use Java, and modify the game only until you install it into your Minecraft.

What Terms of Service are you referring to, Minecraft or Minecraft Forums? Notch said on his blog that mods are okay because he's planning official mod support:

    http://notch.tumblr.com/post/4955141617/the-plan-for-mods

Oh, and the Minecraft Forums also have a gigantic section for mods, so you can't violate the ToS on here.

See that requires that Minecraft and its mod be considered literary(no), scientific(no), or artistic, a GIANT maybe. Unless it can be shown to fall into one of those 3 it is NOT protected under the Berne Convention.

Why the hell am I even trying, you people ignore the part of the ToS that outright says you can't distribute a modified copy of any part of minecraft, like base classes, edited versions of rails used for new items, recolored cobble, anything editing baseclasses, ect, ect. Whole community founded on outright ignore the terms of service for the damn game and ignoring the law when it doesn't work how they want or is inconvenient.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derivative_work
Also I would LOVE to see the damn argument for why mods don't fall under this.

If you looked further down into the link, you should have seen the "Fair Use Defense", which grants legitimate owners of products whatever they want to it, provided it's legal. The example of that was the Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. v. Nintendo of America Case. He may have done something shady with the game, but it was his copy, and he did what he wanted with it. This applies to mods the same way; legit copy of Minecraft, his source code for his mod. He distributes the mod (which is his) in a way that only other legit owners of Minecraft can use and enjoy.

    "Well, they need Mojang's conse-"

Their working on official mod support, which makes it easier. How can you explain that?

Either way the technic pack now has permissions from all it's mod authors so there is really no issue with them. What they did was not illegal but immoral, the technic pack creators have seen the error in their ways and have corrected their mistakes.

In my opinion the issue was never about copyright, it was about the mod authors being annoyed that they put alot of work into their mods and it would've been nice to have been asked permission. I'm sure if the technic pack creators had asked first there never would've been an issue.

So, they did get permission? That's all I'm trying to get out of this thread, but I'm liking this debate about copyright the rest of you guys are doing. Something like this should be stickied. :P

what im getting so far is that we are all just acting silly about this, arent we?

Oh **** no, this is a legit discussion. Mods are everywhere, and as popular as Minecraft and these forums are, someone's bound to steal someone else's idea.

Ahem. NO THERE IS NOTHING ILLEGAL GOING ON. You hear illegal in relation to Tekkit only from people who don't understand how copy right laws work. The modders who and moan about it act like the copyright they think they get just for saying it exists. This is ignoring the fact that items that are derivative of other items, such as mods, need to be examined for if they have enough originallity to be covered under its own copyright or it is NOT original enough in which case it has no copyright protection. They ignore that part and assume their mods are just magically protected.

I can't wait for when one tries to actually enforce it and then gets laughed out of court.

I doubt anything's going to court. What you said about modders making copyrights is wrong: It was their intangible, intellectual property, and they put up copyrights to prevent someone else stealing it, including modpacks. Unless you provide evidence that Technic (not Tekkit, sorry, I screwed that up) got strict, non-implied consent from the developers whose mods were included in this launcher, then it very well may be illegal.
