    Are you getting other noises eg: destroying blocks, walking, etc? Because if your not sometimes this happens to me to. Check your resources folder in .minecraft. It occasionaly doesnt download properly or something and comes up empty and I get no noise at all. Just hit "force update" in .minecraft and it should fix.

    MASSIVE clay patch at about x-411 z-86 dont worry about y just look straight down wen u get there. u will need a terraria style breathin hole tho!

    Found 4 patches of clay underwater around the island. Got 2 and a half stacks of clay balls from them. You can see all of them from the island. Happy hunting!
