Have you ever clicked an ad and done more than check out a server? Word of mouth at school is how kids tell each other about servers.Posted in: Server Administration
Short attention span not-withstanding.
You already know what you need to fix.
Oct 17, 2013TheMosey posted a message on Want to create a 'serious' server... Advice pleaseProblem is most "serious" mincrafters long ago rented their own server space with their other serious friends and made a server. What is left is kiddies.Posted in: Server Administration
Oct 3, 2013Mod/admin roles are earned positions.Posted in: Server Recruitment
By being a regular and good citizen you can be offered a role of "Helper" (usually a month or 3 of mature behavior and friendly play). Mods are promoted from Helpers. Admins are promoted from Mods.
I refuse to just make someone a mod because they ask for it. I have seen the position abused and drama caused far, far too many times.
Oct 1, 2013Do you have the right matching versions of mod and Bukkit? That is, you can't have a mod for 1.6.2 and a Bukkit for 1.6.4. There is no API per se, so if X looks at line/function name whatever it may not be there and the result may be the mod giving up and going home.Posted in: Server Administration
Oct 1, 2013I have run a family friendly survival server for the last year. Before that I ran a standard issue survival servr for a year.Posted in: Server Recruitment
This server, play.mcscouts.com (website mcscouts.com) started as a safer place to play for Cub/Girl/Boy scouts. There were (and technically still are) commands only scouts get.
What it has evolved into is a family friendly server big enough we had to take donations to keep increasing it in size. It is stable (mostly) well-attended and has a good staff of "older" kids who are trusted with most of the day-to-day activities while I am at work.
Family friendly meaning helpful staff, large areas of no PVP, simple paths to success, rules, helping outnewbies and kids, no swearing, and so on. A place you can be comfortable letting your kids play on.
On weekends there are 15-30 kids online at any given time. Not huge but stable. There is usually someone on most hours of the day and bursts when school lets out around the world.
Sounds great, right?
Well, it is still more than I can handle. Moneywise, things are set. Donations have pretty much paid for the next year of service at the current size. However, kids, being kids, I don't want to give them keys to the car. Sometimes there isn't all the strategy, thought and follow-through needed for projects and planning.
It isn't a HUGE deal at all, things like the new shop which was quick to be built (the fun part) but not as much to get finished (the boring details). Things like the rare tantrum which stops me from allowing staff to reset the server, add or configure new plugins... too easy to destroy a year's worth of work, or just generally go off strategy.
Short version, being teens, sometimes the big picture or all the details aren't thought out before something would be destroyed, built or changed and that causes headaches.
Don't get me wrong, the server is infinitly better with my staff!! New spawn is oodles more awesome than my old one, they keep things mostly safe, and fun, they built an amazing new game area.
However, for example, with the day job and my own kids I don't have time to find plugins and configure and (properly) test them, much less have new ones commissioned and made... etc.
Sifting, sorting and implementing new ideas is more than building and sometimes takes a grown up mind. I need more minds.
Diatribe aside, what I am hoping to find is someone who also wants a family friendly server and has some experience as an admin I can partner up with. The server is a bit neglected now because there is only one of me and no one I can really trust.
I want to do more promoting, more games, more... stuff I am not doing now.
I guess short version, if you are interested, have questions, think you might want to help (adults only for co-owners, anyone else feel free to check it out) let me know. Reply here or PM me. Happy to answer whatever.
Aug 27, 2013TheMosey posted a message on how do i find the cause of my memory leaks in my bukkit server? How much ram are you rocking? Another world (or 3) are server hogs. Remember each world is likely another world of chunks in RAM at any time, plus Nether if you allow it in the extra worlds.Posted in: Server Support
on top of that, Heros can be a constant ram slammer (like MCMMO)
Aug 27, 2013TheMosey posted a message on [Server] WARNING Can't keep up! Did the system time change, or is the server overloaded? It's actually not much of a problem. As long as you have a reasonable number of slots you will be a tad laggy but no big deal.Posted in: Server Support
Keep redstone, falling objects, boats nad minecarts to a minimum and the message is more annoying than showstopping (usually).
Aug 27, 2013TheMosey posted a message on Set my server to online=false, what will be changedThat allows me to join as you... your name or any admin and grief until I see fit. Even worse, if you have World Edit or Logblock I can run amuck changing pretty much anything.Posted in: Server Support
Aug 27, 2013That is a config option in your version.Posted in: Server Administration
However, I'd echo you want to upgrade factions since the configs are new. (To be honest I haven't upgraded because I am lazy and the mcore is a day of factions downtime I don't want to break).

Well your description thing says "Factions" Thats basically the most popular type of server. Also my server wont have a /rankup system. BUying freedom isn't my idea of a prison.
My server has something fairly unique, that there aren't 1000 carbon copies of already.
I get you want to avoid that, however, asking for ideas is like asking for people to invest in a company and saying you will come up with a product later.
You (or your staff) need a good idea first, not "I want an X server... how do I make it different." If you don't know, why will it be different?
Why a prison server? What is wrong with the 10^10 of them already in every size from "lonely and broken" to "1000 people on" and "for profit"... "impossible"... etc.
