posted a message on Mojang Announcement: EULA, and Servers
I truly have a hard time understanding where people have an issue with a server selling "anything"? It's not like there are not a ton of alternatives. Obviously these servers that are pay2win are popular for a reason and the most vocal opponents are the ones who feel slighted by a player they perceive as having bested them only because they have "paid for an advantage."

Let the server owners make money. If enough people leave or do not join the server, the servers will close or lower their prices.

...again, I cannot understand why you cannot just open Minecraft, select the server you dislike for charging money, hit delete, and stop complaining.

Minecraft will never be completely pay2win but it will always be a part of the game. Also, if it was that cheap to just open and run a server paid through donations then every other person out there would have a server they always wanted.

posted a message on Breaking News - Modding API Updates!
There are a couple things that scare me about this post:

"Will client-only mods be supported by the API?
Not at this time, but as the biggest client-only modifications are already covered (texture packs, splash screen text etc), it didn't seem necessary."

We need some clarification on whether this will prevent client side mods from working at all. I think that by preventing, say a minimap mod, will turn a good portion of users away from a server if it is not in their "provided" server mod. Some of us really like using certain mods that do not provide an edge over another player but more of a quality of life benefit. Some might say that MCP will stick around but who really knows? They put in so much work at every release and put up with so much grief that they might just say F it and tell us to use the API.

"Will mods like Optifine be added to vanilla?
Something even better. Overall, the game engine is being simplified, taking most of the load off of the client, and having the server doing the heavy work, greatly improving SMP."

This concerns me that servers will have greater hardware requirements. Or am I reading this wrong? This might just put a lot of servers off line due to increasing server costs.

Lastly, we all know that January 2013 really means another 6 months or so. Remember when we first heard about the mod API? Was that not about a year ago? I really can't remember, it has been that long. I do remember them promising something; documentation, a beta release, etc..., but that never materialized. Basically I am not holding my breath.

Dude, what if enderman wore a full set of diamond armor?
    That's like...impossible to beat.
Enderman are the easiest mobs to beat... if you want to kill one just make sure that you have a 5x5 block platform over your head 2 blocks high.... stand in the middle and hack away. They are too tall to get to you and you can hit them at your leisure. I always keep a half stack of dirt in my inventory (for various reasons) and it takes me about 10 seconds to throw up a platform above my head and farm some XP/ender pearls.

posted a message on Looking for opinions in order to improve an existing server
What keeps me on a server:
    - dont have me spawn in a ghost town (I want to know that the server actually has active people)
    - make your rules clear, concise, and straight to the point (cant tell you how many times I have to ask in chat "is there PVP here?")
    - also, rules need to be clearly marked and near the spawn (or easy to get to and well marked)
    - we dont care about huge epic spawns (most of us at least)
    - good looking, buildable, areas just outside the spawn that are not hacked up (keep your areas looking well maintained)

other than that I dont care about your plugins, economy, games....

Its just what I am looking for, others will have a different approach.

A little edit after looking at your server description... Personally, I am completely fed up with "hardcore pvp", "insane pvp", "factions", etc... I think that it is overdone and without something to set your server apart from the others you are just lost in the pile of others servers with the same "features" to offer. I am a little bias since I have been on the hunt for a strictly PVE freebuild moderately populated server for nearly 6 months now with no luck.

posted a message on LF special server.
Looking for a server to fit some needs: (in order of most to least important)

    - no pvp (no world pvp but pvp is ok as long as it is kept to arenas etc)
    - freebuild (I would like to put in a modreq to have a build area protected and not have to work for days to purchase land / blocks)
    - medium population (no 10 - 15 playing on the weekdays and 20 - 30 players on the weekends servers)
    - new(er) map with some populated areas left to build.

I am basically looking for a populated server where I can build a decent structure without getting ganked and have some friendly people in the general area to share some builds with.

Any ideas / thoughts / suggestions?

I honestly do see this as Curse's attempt at doing something nice for the community.
Actually it is a way for them to generate money via premium subscriptions since some of those nifty features that they are touting actually require a premium membership to access. (might differ in the 'beta' client initially)

Now on the other hand you are using their bandwidth and they deserve to be compensated for that so it's a trade off.

Dropbox is not the ideal file host for this purpose. That is why you don't see it used for files with tons of hits. This mod has had 1000s of hits. I ruled it out a while ago. I appreciate your comment though, keep them coming :smile.gif:

The default download link isn't working. Aside from the fact it really doesn't look very trustworthy, it refreshes every second or so.
Fixed the link. Thank you for letting me know. As far as "trustworthy", only you can make that decision for yourself. I have never had any issues with the host but you must feel secure with your own security. As I tell any of my clients: when it comes to security you are the weakest link and you must make sure that what you are clicking is safe. Do your homework first if you have to and only download / click on links that you are sure are safe.

So if you are not comfortable using any of the links that I provide I have no issues with that at all. You might also see that above I am looking for that "ultimate" host that offers me the same level of features but that might be a little more well known and skips the ads :smile.gif:

I am looking for some suggestions for free file hosts that:
    - provide links without advertising
    - have referrer tracking
    - direct linking
    - no wait time
    - no file expiration
    - no minimum file size
    - etc...

You know that ultimate filehost that has everything.
I just want to provide files without hassle. No advertising (or wait times). I can deal with advertising if it is minimal. I really just want to be able to track file hits with the minimum of hassle for me and the downloaders.

    Quote from AtomicStryker

The point of this particular mod is to stay within Minecraft's boundaries, inside the vanilla compass to be exact.

You are welcome to code some sort of compass overlay and post it as your own mod (or i could add it as option).

Well, I have done just that. I am using the default compass as well, you do have a point there. I have basically written a similar mod with a major change: it no longer depends on any other mod but it supports the popular ones. It not only supports Optifine and MCPatcher but also will support no mods at all. Find my mod called Advanced Compass HERE.

    Readme:

    ===============================================================================
=== PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO READ THE README :smile.gif: ===
    ===============================================================================

Thank you for taking the time to try out Advanced Compass.

Advanced Compass was inspired by the lack of Optifine support in the Finder Compass mod originally released by AtomicStryker on http://www.minecraftforum.net/. You can find his version HERE (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/189739-19pre3-finder-compass-diamonds-dungeons-any-block/). The biggest difference between our two releases is that I do not require any other mod for this to work. You can use this with any of the popular HD texture patch mods (Optifine and MCPatcher) or without any mod at all and just with an unmodded Minecraft.

It behaves almost identical to its cousin with a few minor differences. Basically, in game, you take your compass with you while you mine and when you are within a predefined range of a specified block (diamond, gold, mob spawner, chest, etc...) a unique needle on the compass will point you in the direction of that block. There is a simple configuration file that seems more complex than it really is but once you take the time to read the instructions in the file you will see that it is really quite simple.

A note about using this in SMP (multiplayer). While this, or any client mod, can not be directly detected you can be found out. The detection that works to find people running X-Ray mods will also detect you using this. This holds true for any mod (Finder Compass included) that helps you find rare blocks / minerals. So please take note of this and just don't cheat.

Right now I have left the default spawn needle in the compass. I am planning to add additional configuration options later on that will allow for additional needles that point to different areas. A north needle, your home, or any waypoint possibly. Those are all possibilitied for the future. Let me know what you think.

    Installation:
Pick the appropriate zip file according to your needs (see post) and follow the normal instructions for installing a mod. Make sure that you install this mod AFTER you have installed you HD texture mod. So install Optifine or run MCPatcher BEFORE installing this mod. Otherwise it will not work. If you are just running an unmodified Minecraft or you do not have a HD texture mod installed you can install this anytime. Once you have installed Advanced Compass you should run Minecraft once to generate the default configuration file located in your minecraft folder. Read the instructions in that file for additional information.

The default configuration file (advanced_compass.cfg) is generated automatically inside of the minecraft folder on the first run of the mod. If you ever mess up the file you can just delete it and it will be automatically created again for you.

Default Configuration File: (This is automatically created when you first run the mod.)

    # AUTHOR: mjb
    # VERSION: 2020101
    # MINECRAFT VERSION: 1.0.0
    # CREDITS: AtomicStryker (Finder Compass)
    # Yoda12999 (Enhanced Compass)
    # epinull (original Enhanced Compass)
    #
    # DESCRIPTION:
    # Advanced Compass will find a specified block in a specified range and
    # create a colored compass needle pointing
    # you to the closest block in that range.
    #
    # USAGE:
    # In this configuration file add a line for the block that you want to search
    # for in the following format: (each value should be separated by a colon ':')
    #
    # blockID:R:G:B:horScan:vertScan:lowLimit:upLimit:scanDelay
    # -----------------------------------------------
    # blockID = block ID that you want to scan for (see notes)
    # R:G:B = color of the needle in hexdecimal format (0 to 255)
    # horScan = horizontal scan range / block distance (1 to 128)
    # vertScan = vertical scan range / block distance (1 to 128)
    # lowLimit = lowest level to scan in (1 to 128)
    # upLimit = upper level to scan in (1 to 128)
    # scanDelay = how often to run the scan (in seconds)
    #
    # NOTES:
    # Some important information to keep in mind when configuring Advanced Compass.
    # - blockID can be found at "http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Data_values" in
    # the "Item IDs" section. Use the "Dec" value.
    # - color values can be found at "http://www.colorpicker.com" by choosing your
    # color and copy the R G B values respectively.
    # - horizontal and vertical scan values / block distance are calculated from the
    # 1x1x2 player space. (please see recommendations below!)
    # - upper and lower limit is the block range (height / depth) at which the scan
    # will only occur. Outside of this range the compass will not show or scan for
    # the block ID.
    # - scan delay is how often, while in range, the scan will take place
    #
    # RECOMMENDATIONS:
    # While Advanced Compass can track an unlimited number of blocks within
    # rendered range you will lock up your computer of you go overboard. The larger
    # the horizontal and vertical scan range the more calculations will need to be
    # made. The more common the block the more calculations will need to be made.
    # The more block IDs that you are tracking the more calculationswill need to be
    # made. See a pattern here? Basically only track a few blocks and keep the range
    # size and scan delay within reason. See examples for ideas.
    #
    # When configuring Advanced Compass keep in mind the following.
    # - the block ID that you choose should not be too common. e.g. stone (ID 01) is
    # not a good idea obviously. Choose only rare blocks.
    # - each needle color should be different enough from each other to be easily
    # separated visually.
    # - horizontal range should be reasonable dependant on the scan delay. Shorter
    # scan delays should have smaller horizontal ranges. e.g. with a delay of 1
    # second you should keep the horizontal range within 12 to 15 blocks.
    # - vertical range should be either 0 (being at the players level) or 1 to scan
    # a block level above and below the player. Again, this can be larger if your
    # scan delay is longer.
    # - when setting your upper and lower scan limits keep in mind that not all
    # blocks occur within all depths. e.g. diamond will only occur in the 1 to 16
    # block level. Scanning outside of this range is pointless and a waste.
    # - the scan delay can greatly affect how many CPU cycles are used. This can
    # cause performance issues is set too short with a large scan area for a
    # common block. Keep the delay shorter for less common blocks with a shorter
    # scan range. A larger delay is acceptable for really rare blocks in a larger
    # area. e.g. a dealy of 15 to 20 seconds is recommended for really large scan
    # areas for uncommon blocks such as mob spawners or chests at lower levels.
    # There is a build in default minimum delay of 1.5 seconds.
    #
    # EXAMPLES:
    # - diamond ore
    # 56:0:255:255:15:0:1:16:1
    # broken down:
    # 56 = the block ID for diamond ore
    # 0:255:255 = the RGB for a turquiose color similar to the diamond ore
    # 15 = scan 15 blocks out in all direction on the horizontal axis
    # 0 = scan only the the same level as the player
    # 1:16 = scan only in the depth / range that diamond ore will occur
    # 1 = scan for diamond ore every 1 second
    #
    # - monster spawner
    # 52:255:0:0:20:5:1:64:15
    # broken down: will scan for a monster spawner block (52) within the levels at
    # which they are most common (1 - 64). Will only run the scan every fifeteen (15)
    # seconds within a twenty (20) block horizontal plane out from the player and
    # five (5) levels above and below the player. If found a red (255:0:0) needle
    # will be shown pointing to the monster spanwer block.
    #
    # ADDITIONAL NOTES:
    # If you mess up this file and you receive an error just delete this file and it
    # be regenerated.
    #
    # Please make sure that you know what you are doing if you add your own block IDs.
    # Understand the consequneces and how it will affect your computers performance.
    # For example scanning for that diamond block example:
    # horizontal range of 15 (15 in all directions out from the player or 30 x 30)
    # vertical range of 0 (really 2 since it incldes the player)
    # so we have: (30 * 30) * 2 = 1800 blocks to scan every second.
    #
    # scan for the same block with:
    # horizontal range of 20 (20 in all directions out from the player or 40 x 40)
    # vertical range of 5 (really 5 up and 5 down plus 2 inclding the player or 12)
    # so we have: (40 * 40) * (5 + 5 + 2) = 19200 blocks to scan every 15 seconds.
    #
    # That is a 10x increase in the amount of blocks to process. You can see how a
    # small change in just a few of the numbers can affect performance dramatically.
    # So stay small to begin with and if you feel that your system can handle more then
    # make a small change and restart the game.
    #
    # [ALL LINES STARTING WITH '#' WILL BE IGNORED!]
    #
    # PREMADE BLOCK SCANS: (remove the # to activate the needle)
    #
    # diamond ore [turquiose needle]
    56:0:255:255:15:0:1:16:1
    #
    # gold ore [yellow needle]
    # 14:255:255:0:15:0:1:16:1
    #
    # monster spawner [red needle]
    # 52:255:0:0:20:5:1:64:15
    #
    # possibly an abandoned mine or stronghold by searching for a chest at lower levels
    # where a player is less likey to have one [green needle]
    # 54:0:255:0:20:5:1:50:15

    Advanced Compass

Waiting to see if the official mod API makes an appearance in the next week or two before updating this. It is a real PITA to have to keep changing for every patch.

    - An advanced Minecraft compass that will find a specified block in a specified range and create a colored compass needle pointing you to the closest block in that range. -

    About:

Have you ever been deep underground and have been mining and mining for a long time and no diamonds? Well Advanced Compass to the rescue. Just install this mod, make a few configuration changes, create a standard compass in Minecraft, and you are good to go. You can track multiple blocks such as diamond, gold, chests, and mob spawners all at the same time. Advanced Compass, unlike some other compass mods is compatible with the most popular HD texture mods available such as MCPatcher and Optifine.

Installation is quick and simple: just add this to your minecraft.jar the same way as any other mod after you have installed your HD texture mod. Configuration is simple as well: run Minecraft once to generate the default advanced_compass.cfg file. Open it with any simple text editor (such as Notepad) and read the additional information there.

A special note about SMP (multiplayer) and Advanced Compass. While Advanced Compass will work in any SMP server this could be considered cheating. It can also be detected in the same way as any X-Ray mod or clear texture pack. There is no special way that any of these client side mods are detected by the server but you are given away by how fast you accumulate diamonds, or any blocks that the server wants to track. Please contact your server admins for help on determining if this mod is allowed on your particular SMP server.

Advanced Compass was originally written due to of the lack of Optifine support in the Finder Compass mod originally released by AtomicStryker on these forums. You can find his version HERE.

Inspiration for Advanced Compass goes to AtomicStryker for Finder Compass which was derived from Yoda12999s Enhanced Compass mod which was taken over from epinulls Enhanced Compass originally. They each suffer from the need for MCPatcher to work.

Current Releases: see next post for previous releases.
Waiting to see if the official mod API makes an appearance in the next week or two before updating this. It is a real PITA to have to keep changing for every patch.
