Hostile mobs should be spawned to their maximum potential when we use the bed (as if night actually did pass), and then we should wake up at sunrise. That way there are still mobs out, but we've eliminated the time. This means that we must wait just a minute for it to be safe.
This would be cool, except that zombies, skeletons, and spiders (since they go passive at day) would still be trivialized.
You'd have to make nothing but creepers spawn - and a lot of them. (Well, a lot of them on Hard. A little less on Normal. None on Peaceful, of course.) At least beds would then have a cost you'd have to consider before using them, instead of their current free "let's close our eyes and pretend nothing happens at night and skip it with zero consequences" form.
edit: Maybe beds should have a significant chance to fail on Normal and Hard. The chat could say you're having trouble sleeping. Or the chat could say you heard a noise and woke up, and maybe it would've skipped an extremely short time of the night. And when you try to go back to sleep, it says you're too scared to sleep.
So, you whine that they should ban beds because you need to use them when you dont want to?
Whats the difference of spending ten minutes in safe shelter and spending 10 seconds in it?
Because at most one or two (if any) mobs are going to spawn when you skip night, effectively turning Normal and Hard into Peaceful mode unless you're down in caves. Even if a mob does spawn, it has to be lucky enough to not be a zombie or skeleton, because the sun will immediately kill them.
And I'm hardly whining.
I'm pretty surprised to still be receiving "don't use them" comments. I think people are just reading the thread title and posting knee-jerk replies and not reading the actual OP. I should've picked a different thread title.
The point is that I'm basically stuck using them, because I play with my close friends. No, I'm not going to be an asshole and not play with my friends because of beds, because I'm not an antisocial maniac, so avoid making that bizarre suggestion. And I'm not going to force night time on everyone if everyone else wants to skip it. I'm merely commenting on the fact that I didn't realize beds were going to change the game so drastically and effect the difficulty and dynamics of the game so much.
Yes, maybe it's a "grass is greener" thing. But I at least hope in the future that using a bed will force a ton of monsters to spawn outside, and I hope zombies and skeletons will be changed to be immune to sunlight. And I guess I also hope spiders will no longer because passive during the day. It sucks to remove those cool things, but I've realized beds remove a lot from the game, and it has to be gained back somewhere.
Yesterday, a creeper snuck up on me and exploded, killing my poor wolf and hurting me pretty badly. And I realized it was the first time a creeper had snuck up on me in over a month - that is, since beds were added to the game.
I'm not sure if beds are really healthy for the fun of this game. Being forced to face night time is, in retrospect, something that made the game much more interesting.
I know people will say "so just don't use beds then!" But I play with friends on a private server, and there's something psychological there that makes it hard to not use them. Even when playing alone, what night time brings isn't always easy to appreciate at the time. When you're playing with friends and there's that extra level of peer pressure, then forget about it. (Because I'm not going to be a jerk.)
I asked my friend about this and suggested banning the use of beds. He said "no way, it's nice to build in peace." The bed update quietly turned Normal and Hard into Peaceful mode and got everyone used to the idea. As soon as the sun starts setting, everyone either rushes to the nearest bed or rushes to the nearest shelter to drop the bed they're carrying on them (since everyone does).
I'm someone who initially thought beds were going to be an awesome addition. Now I'm not so sure. Has anyone else changed their minds in a similar way?
I know exactly what we're getting and i'm 100% sure of it.
MORE BITCHING FROM THE "FANS".
OH BOY, THE FANS ARE BITCHING, CANT BE THE GAMES FAULT
Just saying that nothing is ever going to be enough for some people.
Yeah, I mean did you see all that new content and gameplay in 1.4? How could people be unsatisfied?</sarcasm>

You're serious? 1.4 already came out and now you're wanting 1.5?
Be thankful for what Notch gave us, lads.
He gave us something? What would that be? Well, to begin with, I'm pretty sure I paid for the game, so there isn't anything he's "giving" me. To end with, 1.4 added next to nothing. That means there's next to nothing to discuss about it. So yes, obviously people are talking about 1.5.
I have feedback on the new planks, supply chest, and door though. (I haven't seen the jukebox or etc. yet). But they now look a little too... pure. They are brighter, less gritty/gloomy, and smoother than other textures, and it gives them a more cartoony look and can make them look out of place.
And it's particularly true for the supply chest, where the top is almost completely smooth.
My personal favorite blend between this version and the last version of the texturepack would be to keep the new tools and trees but revert back to the old wood stuff otherwise (unless there will be further tweaks).
I rather meant to ask if i am allowed legally, though nobody here seems to know. Perhaps the terms of use?(does minecraft have one?)
Who cares? Just do it. If it's "illegal", then Notch is unreasonable and you should disregard him, because there's no way to detect if it's you or someone else playing on your account. Like, Notch isn't spying on everyone via their webcams and making visual profiles. Just sayin'.
The updates are less often because Notch was receiving complaints from MC server administrators for updating too often during alpha, having to take servers down for updates, breaking mods, etc. As a result, Notch assured them he would update less often during beta to alleviate the issue. (You can go find Twitter conversations about this probably back in December.)
Other reasons people mention in this thread, such as Notch supposedly worrying about patch stability and etc. is just speculation. (And I mean c'mon, remember the disaster that was the first beta patch?) I haven't heard Notch say he's slowing down the updates because he's worried about stability.
But along with these slower official updates, Notch will eventually be releasing daily test builds for people who find the official updates coming too slowly. That way, impatient people like myself (and the OP) will be able to try the latest changes to the game without having to wait for them to arrive in the usual updates.
No texture packs come in ZIP files, and you can select them from the TEXTURE PACK button. This does not do that tho.
Before that method of using different texture packs was put into the game, you had to manually place the textures into the minecraft.jar file in the bin folder.
You still have to do that with high definition texture packs, and that's what you're asking about in the screenshot. So it indeed isn't a mod beyond that.

Oh yeah? Do you have a source link for that? That'd be cool.

I didn't use the word challenging, but interesting.
And I'm getting a lot of the "well don't use them" comments I tried to address in the OP. (I'm playing with friends, etc.)
I agree that it'd be nice if monsters were forced to spawn when you skipped night.

And quit Minecraft out of boredom since the official game has been stagnating for months? That's no fun. You gotta get content from somewhere.
