posted a message on Is a Mob Grinder in 1.2 possible?
I just spent a lot of time building a large-ish mob/xp farm in a creative world. I built it up above an ocean to get away from as many normal spawns as possible.

Monsters are *not* spawning in it at all.

The place for the player to stand and kill or collect is at height 155. Monsters can spawn on this level.

All of the spawning pads were built at 180ish+. Nothing at all is spawning up there.

I know I saw a video of a guy who built one similar and wasn't having any issues at all, but for some reason I'm not getting any spawns. Not sure what the limitations of mob spawning are in 1.2.3, but I sure wish I could find out somewhere.

Good thing they're taking Minecraft a bit more serious now that they jacked up the price and that it's in a "release ready" state.

    Oh wait...

Cool! Thanks for the quick respons MazeCraft.

The current location of the button prevents the use of the pulse shortener (sorry i'm sort of a redstone novice) that I see in that video. Though making it so you can't break the counter with the button is probably worth moving it to a location where we can do that.

Is there no other way to achieve what I've asked for? If not I guess it's time to figure out a new button location.

    Hey Kbec7.

Thanks so much for the response, though I had already figured that out.

I do have another question though.

Currently we have a ring counter hooked up to sets of bookshelves for our enchanting room. The ring counter is toggled by a button, each push cycles the counter through all the different groups of shelves. (E.G. Output one is ShelfGroup1, Output two is ShelfGroup2 and 1, Output three is ShelfGroup 3, 2 and 1, and so on.)

The problem is that if a player pushes the button again before the ring counter finishes its cycle, it completely screws up the conductive/nonconductive blocks in the counter and normally pushes one or two out of the "rectangle".

Is there a way to control how often the button can send a signal to the counter? Basically If someone is spamming the button, I still only want it to activate the ring counter once every couple seconds or so.

Any help would be awesome, and thanks again for taking the time to help me out!

posted a message on Minecraft is going to cost $30.00?
If someone says they'd spend 100 dollars on a game like minecraft it's clearly because they either A ) Aren't earning the money they'd be spending, or B ) Are too wealthy for their own good.

The game is barely worth the ~21 dollars and change that I paid for it to me. And to be completely honest, I've gotten the number of hours of gameplay that I have out of the game almost entirely because of community made mods. If it weren't for the modding community I would feel ripped off with the purchase.

Then again, the game sells 10-13 THOUSAND copies a day at it's current ~$20 price point, so it's not unlikely that it will continue selling at $30.

But what do I know... I'm just a jaded and bitter gamer from a different generation.

I was just in Vegas last weekend, and got harassed by airport security on the way back for my damn deoderant. Not really looking to go through that again so soon.

Heads up to anyone flying there...don't bring any toiletries that are more than 3oz. The TSA agents at McCarran airport in Vegas will throw the biggest bitchfit over it.

That's been going on since 9/11 happened back in 2001. Nothing new there or unique to that airport. Any airport in America will enforce that law.

If you're not sure that something is or isn't allowed on a flight, call the airport before you go instead of throwing a fit and complaining when the TSA enforces the rules that you were too lazy to learn about.

posted a message on If you could made a new block, what would you make?
    Diamond Crafting Station

Would be comprised of 4 pistons in the cardinal direction slots of the craft workbench with furnaces in the other outside spots.

To use you would add lots of coal and fuel.

The coal would be superheated by the furnaces and the pistons would then compress it, forming....

    DIAMONDS!

    Quote from PapaSmurf

Someone already told you what it's supposed to be. I've seen similar racks when I was taking chemistry classes. The in-game bottles are similar to real-life flasks, and that in-game rack is actually very similar to racks for holding flasks.

The flasks have rounded bottoms so you can't just sit them on a flat surface.

So the potion coat rack is merely a potion storage block?

Nothing at all to do with potion creation?

They couldn't get the cauldron to work properly.

They fixed this problem by making a much simpler interface.

It's a shame if you don't care for it, but you are not writing code for Minecraft. You're still free to create a mod that uses the cauldron for potion-making. It just became too much of a hassle for Jens.

Yeah I understand why they did what they did. I just don't understand what exactly the coat rack is supposed to be.

This isn't a "zomg I hate Botch and his new potion ideas" thread. Just curious what the deal with the rack is.

You should be able to download the client from the minecraft.net website. Make sure you're logged in with the account you used to purchase the beta.

Now, while at the main minecraft.net page, look underneath the image of the human with the sheep and pig. There's a "Download" link there.

Click on that and you'll be on your way.

the potion 'rack' looks similar to the way Dewar flasks are typically stored.

Interesting. So there's probably some real world inspiration there. I'm curious how it'll work. I wonder if it will just be storage or if it will be used for potion creation. At first I thought the potion on the right (of the coat rack) was partially full. But then I realized it was just the mushroom visible through the transparent bottle.

Do you know why this is being talked about? Because they already announced that they're scrapping the cauldron (a feature that was technically never even supposed to leave the dev phase) and are switching to this new thing because they're making a new potion system.

I wish people would stop about the cauldrons already.

Also the potion thing is a WIP.

P.S. The cauldron block is still being left in the game; it'll just be purely decorative.

    I know it's a work in progress. I know it's a Beta. I know it's a pre-release.

None of these facts nullify my opinion or make it any less worthy of discussion. I'm not demanding the cauldron be used in favor of the coat rack. I'm merely sharing my opinion that I think the cauldrons made more sense to me. Can't deal with me posting my opinion? Maybe you shouldn't be viewing internet forums.

Do you have a source for your claim that cauldrons will be left in the game for decorative reasons? That would be good news to me.

So what's the deal with the potion coat racks?

    I mean really... I don't get it.

Cauldrons made sense. A coat rack with potions hanging from it makes no sense to me. Is it supposed to represent some sort of potion centrifuge? Is it a storage block for potions?

Here's the coat rack in question:
