What I did is I named my world 'Potatoes', and the seed 'Tomatoes', and when I spawned it was this small patch of sand, and I was facing this over-hanging, that had 2 spiders in it, and another in the distance I saw when I pressed F.
But the spot you spawn, there should be a cliff side behind you with a small hole in it. That hole is a small cavern, at one side (depends where you enter it) is a batch of coal, and another natural hole you can climb in on the other side.
I thought it was perfect for a house.
(I would like everyone to know, that I don't know if this is known, or old.)
If you want to go to the Nether, but have no diamond to mine obsidian, there is another way.
What you will need:
• Blocks (Dirt, Cobblestone, anything really)
• Bucket(s)
• Large supply of Lava
• Water Supply
1st, You will have to construct a cast that is 6x3x1 (LxWxH), then hallow it out on the inside so it is 4x1x1.
2nd, Place a block in the newly-hallowed out cast so there's a 1x1x1 space, and a 3x1x1 space.
3rd, Fill the 1x1x1 space with lava, then pour water onto it, so it becomes obsidian.
If you see where this is going to, then you can figure out the rest by yourselves.
(If I get enough asks, I will show a step-by-step tutorial, with pictures and everything.)
Ever since Beta 1.3 came out, I could and can not play SMP without lag, at all.
What I mean is that I will spawn, and there would be probably a space of 10x10 blocks before its an edge, going straight down, to nothing, I can't speak without a ****-LOAD of time from when I press Enter to when it actually pops up, and I can't build/destroy anything without it going away (Building) or appearing again (Destroying).
I was told in the past it was my internet, if it is how can I update it?
Have you tried hosting your own local network server and playing in it? If you get those weird bugs on your own server then it probably isn't lag but something acting up in your game. I used to have the same problem but then I got better internet and it fixed the issue.
I feel like joining this conversation. My computer can't even handle running a server. When I join any server, there are almost no chunks loaded and I instantly fall into the void. Also, the chat loads as slow as the chunks do.
I would like to say, to add onto all of this, I kept time on how long it took for my own chat to come up after I hit enter, and I hit 00:01:40 (1 Min 40 Seconds)
I don't think it can be my connection since I could play without a single problem before Beta 1.3 came out.

I have tried dozens and dozens of servers, even my IRL friend's.
Reinstalling does not work. If log on, I can walk around, then If i place a block it will shortly disappear, same thing with destroying blocks, even though the IRL friend I mentioned ^^^ can play fine, since he built a town in the server he made. Plus after like a minute it teleports me to where I logged on.
If I join ANY, and I mean -AANNYY- server, I can not destroy any blocks at all, and probably maybe 50 blocks in all horizontal directions, then it will be a pit to the empty place you could find holes in bedrock, but If i look over the edge my game will freeze.
Help?

WHERE DO WE SPAWN?
I'm going to have to get a map of the world by my side, using the surroundings to determine what country I'm in.
