This is very cool, but I did notice one thing that is inaccurate, zeppelins could carry planes but had no hangar, they were instead stored with a trapeze system on the bottom of the zeppelin. The magazine Modern Mechanics had a picture on the cover of a zeppelin with its own runway, but it'd be impossible. Other than that inaccuracy, great job!

Difficult, I'll grant you. But I wouldn't say impossible. :wink.gif: Keep in mind that unlike the Hindenburg, this ship isn't intended to be historically accurate. I am well aware of the Akron and the Macon, the most well-known "flying aircraft carriers" and have studied their design and the trapeze system they employed. Keep in mind, though, that after the crash of the Hindenburg, airship travel over Germany, the US, and Great Britain (where airship travel was most popular) began to be phased out and most existing dirigibles were retired and scrapped. This hypothetical airship may have been built in a past where the Hindenburg never crashed and rigid airships remained a legitimate and plausible means of transportation. Thus, it could have been built any time after the crash of the Hindenburg and perhaps even in the future. With continuously improving technology, who knows how advanced our dirigibles could get and what may be possible?
Anyway, thanks for you input and interest. Also, know that you may have inspired me to start up construction again. This ship may fly yet. :biggrin.gif:

First of all, let me start by apologizing if this has been done before. I don't browse the redstone section very often (I am primarily an airship builder.) so I may not be up to date on what has and has not been invented. Anyway, I was working on an adventure map and I decided that I wanted to have working shops, only without mods or exploitable weaknesses. Now, I had tried doing that exact thing several months ago and made dozens of prototypes but they either got too complicated too fast or they just didn't work altogether.

That is, until I discovered Block Update Detectors. I'll go out on a limb and assume that most of you redstone wizards already know what they are but for those of you who don't, BUDs are basically redstone devices which exploit a glitch to allow block updates to send redstone pulses. What constitutes as a block update? Basically anything. Placing blocks, destroying blocks, draining cauldrons, lighting fires, plants growing, sleeping in beds, the list goes on and on. But one thing stuck out to me: They could record falling and landing sand/gravel. Immediately I had an idea and set off to work.

Red: Block Update Detector. When 5 blocks are sitting atop the bottom piston, it sends a pulse to its connected flip-flop.

Yellow: Flip-flops. One is wired to the BUD so that when the appropriate amount of sand or gravel (5) is reached, it will disable the circuit breaker. The other is wired to the purging piston to allow its state to change.

Blue: Circuit breaker. Starts on. When the correct amount of money has been added, the flip-flop switches it off to allow the button pulse to progress to the light blue section.

Purple: Initial button pulse. Everything the button pulse reaches before the circuit breaker cuts it off.

Light Blue: Continued pulse. Carries the button pulse from purple to the orange and green wires.

Orange: Dispenser input. Carries the button pulse from light blue to the dispenser in order to dispense reward.

Lime: Purge timer. Carries the button pulse from light blue to the purge piston's flip-flop. Sends a single tick pulse and a sixteen tick pulse. The first pulse opens the piston and the second closes it after all gravel/sand has fallen through.

Keep in mind that this is only a prototype and it is fully configurable. I've already built one where you could purchase six different items at six different prices. All you need is more BUD sensors at different heights beneath your "coin slot" along with more dispensers and circuit breakers.

    DOWNLOAD HERE! (Mediafire)

Finally, (as far as I know) this is my own design. You do not need to ask for permission to use or modify it, nor even credit me if you do not wish to. However, please don't try to pass this off as your own. It may not look like much but it took a while to come up with it and to iron out all the bugs. If you have any ideas for improvements, I'd love to hear them and will give credit where credit is due. Happy building! :smile.gif:

Holy cannoli! That's a lot of posts! Sorry I haven't been keeping this up to date. I'll try to address as many of you as possible. Wow! Never thought this would get this popular, though.

    Quote from 6677

Man that map is awesome, small wheat and sugar cane farms would be cool, keep you in the air for longer without loosing hunger.

Thanks for the idea! I was planning on making this ship basically self-sufficient anyway so that seems like it would fit perfectly! Consider it...considered.

    Quote from BrenoSakaguti

Well, the swastika isn't really a national flag in present times, but it would have a real good feeling on the "WW2 Hindenburg" thing.

If you check my first post, I do have a link to my Hindenburg. It did have a Nazi flag for historical accuracy. However, considering that this ship is fictional, I'd like to avoid using potentially offensive images if possible. Thanks for the input, though!

    Quote from zjdracer

    how do i DOWNLOAD it

If you send me a PM, I'll get a prerelease version to you as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I haven't made too much progress lately but I haven't given up!

    Quote from scotty227lcs

Wow its amazing is it on a server? If not it should because its amazing!

No, it's not. If you know of a server where it would fit in, I'm taking suggestions! Any server admin can have it as long as I'm credited somewhere. My current version is incomplete but a server admin can have it if they want. If they want a completed version, they will unfortunately have to wait for a while for me to finish it.

    Quote from Eibenholz

Guy, you´re messing things up. Steampunk is fictional, but this Zeppelin really existed. It was also after the victorian era, which ended with the 19th century.

It looks really cool, but I don´t like the shape so much. I love airships too, I´m building
LZ127 Graf Zeppelin right now. Could you give me some tips about difficult parts or something?

Well, in a sense you're both right. This exact zeppelin never existed but I'm trying to keep it as accurate to the real ones as possible. This one is about 1.5x the size of the Hindenburg in each direction so it is significantly larger than any zeppelin that ever existed. I'm modeling it is if it were made between 1930-1950 in terms of technology and style. I agree with you on the shape. It isn't accurate, it's just an oval. I do have an idea for making it look more accurate but it would be a significant renovation.
Also, good luck with the Graf Zeppelin! If you want to know how I did anything in particular, just send me an IM and I'll gladly help. If you have a server, I can help you there as well, though probably not for extended periods of time.

    Quote from Sgtchuckle117

    A couple suggestions:

    1. Add a zeppelin controller block on the bridge, just for laughs. (what is it, 100K blocks?)

    2. Add some sort of engineering deck area with furnaces, iron blocks, etc.

    3. If I get the map, I will post a video of a tour of it, and then show it filled with TNT and set it off. The full Hindenburg experience!

Hehe. I have the zeppelin mod, and I have built smaller zeppelins to do that with. Unfortunately, even the smallest realistic zeppelin I ever built (65 meters long, slightly larger than the Goodyear blimps) lagged my crappy laptop to oblivion. If you want the map, though, feel free to try it yourself!
Regarding engineering, as with the Hindenburg, there will be several storage, repair, power, and mechanical control roms.
Feel free to make a video! As I've told other people, you can have the early map but it is VERY unfinished. The full version will unfortunately take me a while to make.

    Quote from Canoby

The historical Hindenburg was a nice, slow burn. If you want to do this I'd line it in lumber and set something up with pistons and lava.

Hehe. It took about 30 seconds before the Hindenburg's entire skin was on fire. I'd hate to see what you call a fast burn! :wink.gif:

    Quote from ironsword99

You'd have to move the max size to about 50,000 for that to work.

Hehe. Probably more. Just a quick estimation, When it's done, if I add gas bags (undecided) it will probably approach 4 million blocks. I'm bad at math, though so take that with a grain of salt. :biggrin.gif:

Whew! Finally done! That was a long post! If you guys want to know anything else or have any ideas, feel free to suggest them here or send them to my inbox. I know I'm taking a while but just be patient, please! I've been very busy lately. Also, since there's apparently so much interest, I'll try to make more time for it. :smile.gif:

    Quote from JonSM

Thanks for the comments, everybody (Ironsword I appreciate that :tongue.gif:).

Tell me, did anyone try the tutorial? If so, how did it work for you?

I tried it. I made a reasonably good looking miniature zeppelin with your technique (61 meters long, 11 in diameter.) However, when I tried remaking the Hindenburg, (again) it proved difficult. It was 245 meters long and 41 in diameter. When I tried to use your method, I constructed the framework successfully, but was unable to fill the quarters in convincingly. If you could post a tutorial on making large, imperfect ellipsoids look good, I would REALLY appreciate it! :smile.gif: P.S. Here's my reference picture for the profile view of the Hindenburg to show its shape.

    Not made by me.

Wow! I read the entire tutorial and as an airship maker myself, I can honestly say that this is the best tutorial I've ever seen on the subject. It is very clear and concise and I loved how your blimp isn't a perfect ellipsoid but rather, a teardrop. As of now, my zeppelins are all ellipsoids but after viewing this tutorial, I may attempt to improve them. Thanks! :Diamond:

    it's "aeroplane" not "airplane".

Without getting too far into semantics or spelling rules, I'm American. American English and British English (I'm assuming you're from the UK. If not, I apologize.) are two different dialects and in some cases use different spellings for the same word. While "aeroplane" is a legitimate spelling, I am more used to and more comfortable with "airplane." Plus, it takes one fewer keystroke. :biggrin.gif: Thanks anyway! Any input about the map?

Chill. If you can't take criticism, don't post on these forums. Anyways, I like it. It's a bit plain, however. I'd use a couple of other materials for detailing and accenting. Regarding the inside, how about a statue made of gold or something with columns around it?

Good idea! People who give me suggestions get the map early (call it a prerelease) so just say the word and I'll PM you the current (unfinished) version of the map! Any ideas for what sort of multiplayer minigames I should add? I'm already adding an improved stage for events with automated lights, a trapdoor, and a revolving backdrop. What else should I add?

    Quote from Popret

    MUST... MAKE... DOWNLOAD!!!!!!!

It's not quite finished yet. When it is finished, I'll post the final version here. (Currently doing a massive aesthetic and functional revision of the interior.) BUT, if you give me one good suggestion for improvement, anything at all, I'll send you the current map. It could be the name of the ship, flag design, interior idea, anything you can think of.

well give me that and all i was talking about was more glowstone on runway
its fine anyway it didnt really need the flags its just you were talking about it....

I sent you the early map but I changed the glowstone afterwards, as well as adding two more anti-air guns to the hangar area. You should see it in the next (hopefully final) release.

    Quote from inialater234

    im actualy realy good
    maybe i could

I've been trying unsuccessfully for a while now so if you can, I will love you forever. That and I'll credit you in the final release. The elevator would have to be relatively small. I'd say maximum around 7x7 blocks for the base. (I want it to convincingly fit in an internal support so preferably smaller. :tongue.gif: It would also have to be able to go both up and down. Only two stops are required: The top and the bottom, though each one needs a working call button as well.

    Quote from Massive_Smurf

Damn, is it made of SAND?

I love hitting one sand block and seeing the rest all fall. Would enjoy to see that happen here. Not saying I want it destroyed, or anything. Just a guilty pleasure of Minecraft.

It's clay, actually. Sorry to disappoint. :sad.gif: When I was building the Hindenburg, I wanted it to be the right color (light gray) so I built it using the appropriate colored wool. Then I remembered I was putting it on a multiplayer server and didn't want griefers with flint and steel to recreate the real Hindenburg Disaster. So I switched them both to clay.
I like the thing about sand, though. I might copy it and use MCEdit to find/replace the hull (clay) and internal supports (bedrock) with sand and/or gravel to watch it fall. :biggrin.gif:

but come on you said you would give out individual downloads which is what i want so y cant you just give me what you have

Sorry about that. I've been extremely busy lately and haven't updated anything since I did the hangar a few days ago. I can send you the old map (same one I gave pittbullblue), but it will not have the Danish flags. Also, since it's an older file, it won't have the improved hangar or (partial) interior renovation. You can edit anything you want, including giving it the flag so long as you don't claim any of it as your own. I know it's not much but until I can get another version out, this is the best I've got.

    Quote from TillsterRulz

Very nice work, loving the interior as well.

    Thanks! Any suggestions for improvement?

    Quote from inialater234

more glowstone less torches piston mechanisms

EDIT: ow yeah also make bigger bedrooms

Whenever I have spare time, I renovate the inside. It's going to be a complete redo with a better look, feel, and flow, and better rooms. Aside from the hangar, I really don't have many torches. Regarding piston mechanisms, I'm working on a piston elevator from the passenger area to the hangar. It will be modular and have a base of only 5x7 blocks. Unfortunately, I'm not a redstone whiz so I may need help with it. If you or someone you know is really good at redstone, please tell me! Additionally, I might put a request in at the redstone section of the forums to see if the geniuses there can help.

by the way check out zeppelin mod

I actually downloaded Zeppelin Mod when it first came out. (Back when you could only make airship controls with it.) I did have some fun with it and thought about building large zeppelins for use with it. However, I'd estimate this one has about 0.8-1.4 million blocks so unless you have a supercomputer, I don't see how you can get it to move without crashing your game. If you somehow do succeed, I'd love to see a video. I'll be sure to give you...well, nothing really, unless you count my eternal respect and admiration as something. :smile.gif:
