    Make ores a separate texture and layer them over appropriated rock texture, that way you don't need tons of new block types. Also the new rock types should basically be stone but each have their nuances (like limestone should grow stalactites if it is dripping). Don't add new ores unless there is a need for them.

    Maybe also add a bag just for rocks. It would act as extra inventory space for all of your rocks, that way your inventory wouldn't fill up from exotic rocks. With the bag selected, middle mouse click to open an inventory wheel on screen like most table PCs with all the rock types in the bag. Then the rock selected in the bag would be what the player held when holding the bag. Left click to attack, right click to place the block and again, center click to open the bag sub menu. When the stack of block you are currently holding is used up, the next block stack of the same kind is selected. If that kind of block is used up, the next kind is selected.

    Balancing issues aside, why not just update this ability onto the hoe? It already looks like a damn scythe.

    I think this is extremely overpowered. Collecting crops would be too easy. Things are supposed to take time, and you wouldn't need precision to use the tool - you just face the crops, click the tool, and all the mature crops pop up? Meh.

    I don't support.

    When I farm friend, I plant enough wheat for 64 bread. This means that when I have used all of my bread, all my wheat I have replanted is ready for harvest and I just run up and down my fields, waving my camera around wildly while holding my mouse, which takes me hardly any time. If I die and need new bread before all the wheat had grown or I was just starting a farm, a scythe would be nice to get the fully grown wheat.

    You say this is "extremely overpowered", I disagree. This tool is mainly for convenience as I don't like to micromanage my games. I'd rather build a railroad stations (or even farms), not play farmville and spend my time clicking on plants. True, you could just right click whenever a new plant popped up without caring where you are looking, but you would still need to wait for the plant to grow and clicking for every single plant would wear out your scythe fast. If this were implemented, you could still farm traditionally or use this tool.

    Maybe you would rather decrease the right click range to 4 or 5 block or have it work but right clicking a grown wheat plant and also harvesting the wheat in certain radius of that plant, preventing you from running through your wheat field looking at the sky and getting rich?

    so a MORE powerful items should be less expensive make then the standard version. just no

    derp

    I don't know what you mean by the standard version since there is no such thing as a sickle or a scythe in the game, unless you are talking about your fist in which case that is free, so I still don't understand your point.

    Nah, being a sephiroth weapon wouldn't kinda work, how about increased chance of getting seeds when used on tall grass! :wink.gif:

    Also, the it could be called a sickle and be crafted like this:

    :|: :Diamond: :Diamond:
    :|: :: :Diamond:
    :|: :: ::

    I like the your idea about the tall grass, but I still think that having a reaping ability would be fun (and optional, so you wouldn't get it unless you wanted it.)

    The way I would imagine it working would be the player running around a desert at night, running up to mobs, "reaping" them and running away. Remember that the scythe would have a range of 7, two more than your sword or your fist, so you could still keep your distance since you would have no knock back ability at all but you would still have to avoid arrows and dodge creeper all while making sure you have enough food to keep on running with a mob or angry mobs behind you. To me, this would be a lot more fun than punching cave spider in my mod grinder for half an hour while listening to Les Miserable, even though that is a fantastic book!

    As for a scythe vs. a sickle, the main reason I want a this it for the range so a scythe would make more sense.

    As I mentioned above, I feel that this item is rather superfluous to the main game, so it should be rather cheap. Your crafting recipe, while looking nicer, is three times too expensive for me. Maybe a compromise between me, the fellow above and you would be this crafting recipe:
    :|: :Iron: :Iron:
    :|: :: :Diamond:
    :|: :: ::
    where the :Diamond: could also be :GoldBar: or :Iron:

    Over powered much? This would need to be an extremely expensive item. I honestly don't think this has a place in minecraft.

    I don't think so. Farming is a small part of the game and this would be just out of convenience.

    I recently ran around a field by my base using bone meal everywhere to plant flowers and grass only to later decide to build something on that land, so I had to run around punching everything. A Scythe would have been very nice just to let me clear the land faster. Also, the reaping ability would let you collect exp faster, but doing so would be very risky since you wouldn't be killing the mobs.

    As for me, making the scythe more expensive would make it not worth making. Let's say I could make a diamond scythe with two diamonds or make a diamond sword; I would always make a sword since I could both gain exp and defend myself. Perhaps a trade off would be to not use wooden planks or stone in the recipe, since a wooden scythe is quite honestly lame. That would require the player to gain a certain amount of infrastructure before making one, not to mention that enchanting table required to gain most of the abilities is expensive.

    One change I would add would be to make the scythe only harvest the top part of reeds or cacti so there would still be one block in the ground to let it continue growing.

    As of update 1.1 Trampling crops is a thing of the past my friend :smile.gif:

    that is a relief. I haven't updated yet because I didn't want to have to update my whole network and server. A scythe would still be handy by being able to harvest faster and the magnetic ability would prevent the wheat from falling into a stream and making you have to hunt down the few pieces you missed.

    A scythe would cut every grass, flower, reed, and mature wheat block and netherwart in a 7 block diamond radius with a right click and all dropped items would magnetically come to the player to avoid messing up farmland when collecting the dropped wheat. Scythes could also be enchanted with harvesting (increasing how many resources are dropped, like luck) and reaping (giving the scythe the ability to get some experience points with a single click from an enemy with out damaging it.) When reaping, the player couldn't revive more experience than slaying the enemy.

    A scythe would be made like this
    :|: :Diamond: ::
    :|: :: ::
    :|: :: ::
    where the :Diamond: could also be :wood:, :cobblestone:, :Iron: or :GoldBar:

    also, it would be nice to have a right click option for the hoe that would till the ground and plant a wheat seed at the same time

    Edit:
    many of you don't like the right click area effect; either it is too powerful or it takes the fun out of farming for you. How about scrapping that idea and instead, right click to havest as you would normally do, but the scythe would only harvest fully grown plants (wheat, melon and nether warts) without having any effects on melon stems or plants that are still growing and it could harvest plants gowning behind plants that are still growing without having to get the very tops of them. You would still have a reach of 7 block when using a scythe

    I like this recipe better for the scythe:
    :|: :Iron: :Iron:
    :|: :: :Diamond:
    :|: :: ::
    where the :Diamond: could also be :Iron: or :GoldBar: and Not :cobblestone: or :wood: (inspired by X9YUM9X)

    I also like the idea that when used on grass and or wheat, you have a higher chance of getting more seeds (inspired by X9YUM9X)

    or give the above right click abilities above to the hoe (Altoid2)so this happens:
    >right click on dirt or grass to get farmland
    >right click on farmland and plant a seed if one is in the inventory
    >right click on anything still growing, a melon vine or a cactus or reed a single block high; nothing happens
    >right click on a melon, tall grass, a fully grown netherwart or wheat; harvest it, magnetic pulls drops to player and increase # of seeds

    The new lighting is neat, but because of how the light maps works, torch light looks like it decreases in Kelvins as it falls off. This is because the full brightness is pure white and the fall off tones are red. If instead of having a global light map, each light source was given an intensity AND a cast color, not only could there be unlimited color choices for modders or new block/ mob types but it would be easy to keep a color exposure.

    posted a message on Moving Rivers, Rapids and more
    So right now, I'm playing the just pre-released 1.9, and I think rivers are boring. For one, they aren't even rivers - they are river shaped lakes! Obviously, Notch has never been camping. River should be flowing. This would be easy to build into the level generation, just make rivers stair step every 8 block, make a lake as its source and have the water run down hill into a lake, the ocean, the desert where the water dries up or even into an underground lake (that would be cool).
    -
    So once Notch does that, here are some food for thought ideas:
    -
    1) allow water to spread over other source blocks. This is the easiest way I can think of to allow rivers to be a few blocks deep and still flow. This would also fix permanent holes in the ocean by letting the water several levels high to flow into source blocks just as they do in a 2x2 infinite spring or when you pull water out of a shallow lake. In addition the direction and speed of a water flow over a source block would be inherited by the 6 source block directly below it. This would prevent a current being only on the surface of a river but would also not create a massive current if someone spilled a bucket of water in the middle of the ocean. I should also note that this would not effect waterfalls since waterfalls are made out of water flows, not source blocks.
    -
    2) add simulated water erosion. For example make slot canyons between two hills or a river delta made of sand where a river meets the ocean. Add ox bow lakes in logical places next to a windy river in a plains biome. This can be taken as far as you want, since almost all of our geography is caused by tectonic activity and erosion.
    -
    3) add a property to blocks called "water conductivity." This would define how easily water spreads over blocks. Right now, a water source block will spread 8 blocks in each direction on a flat surface. With a water conductivity property, sand could be set to only allow the water to spread 2 block in each direction. Dirt could be a 5 while most everything else would remain an 8. With this new property, a new block could be added called "river bed" and would naturally occur under rivers and would have a water conductivity of, say, 24. River bed could be crafted with cobblestone, gravel and clay (if you can imagine the sand as a clay ball):
    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:
    :gravel: :gravel: :gravel:
    :sand: :sand: :sand:
    this would make clay and gravel actually useful. Water source blocks could either be an 8 or inherit its conductivity from the first non-source block below it. Rain could make all blocks have a +4 and a hot desert biome could be a -1
    -
    4) add a speed property to water flow. This would make water flowing down a steep hill move much faster than a meandering brook. This would also need an inertia property so that water could gain speed down a hill and speed up the current at a bottle neck. This would make river rapids strong enough to push the player down stream and make swimming up waterfalls impossible. If the player fell into rapid they would be push down stream until the river slowed. While being rushed down the rapids, their camera would be tugged in random direction. If they ran into a rock face first they would stop as normal but if they ran into a rock backwards, they would bounce off and take falling damage. The faster the rapids, the harder it would be to control the camera and the faster you would go. This would make the world more fun now that you had to build bridges across rivers and exciting but not deadly if you fell in - not to mention how boating would be!
    -
    5) make rivers interesting. I live in Colorado and our rivers are full of stepping stones, tiny and huge waterfalls, beaver damns, felled trees and 20 ton boulders. Give a river the spacial texture it deserves. All these would make finding a way across more fun and more exhilarating when trying to avoid them while in the rapids.
    ----------
    these were just a few ideas I had at 1 in the morning, yikes it is late. My dream water would be like the finite water mod with dynamic erosion, water and weather, but that is a far ways off. These ideas should be relatively simple to implement and while it doesn't change the core mechanics of minecraft's water, should add a great deal of depth and fun. I'm not smart enough to code mods so hopefully Notch will read some of this or someone make a mod of this. Please tell me what you think and add your own ideas on how to make the river better.
