This is quite normal behaviour, though it may also hint at world corruption.

Create a new world. Does it still happen? If so, then it may just be your computer.

This happens in all worlds, new, old, etc. Though it does seem to happen less in maximized mode than windowed. And I doubt its my computer since its a quad-core Phenom II with a 580GTX and a 280GTX and 8GB RAM. So I've been suspecting its either a memory control issue, or poor graphics mapping to the video card.

But what really stands out to me is that this was never a problem until the patch that started everyone seeing this. I don't remember which patch it was, but its been quite some time. And a patch soon after that fixed it for many people, but apparently not everyone. So as my CIO would say when something breaks, "what changed?".

    THis is normal

Seriously? Minecraft didn't used to do this. It started several patches ago and hasn't been addressed since. But that doesn't make it normal.

Does anyone know if Mojang has any plans to address this or any tips to work around the issue?

posted a message on Rope and its various potential uses
I've been doing a bit of forum searching and I've seen some varied ideas for the use of rope, but tonight I found a seed that made rope that much more enticing. I spawned in a huge tree on top of a sheer cliff that put me well above the clouds. So here's my suggestions:

Rope - Crafted from vines would be the obvious choice for natural sourcing. However, I'd add in the potential to find rope hanging from beams in abandoned mines, or down long vertical shafts. And if you clip it at the top it fall to the bottom in a resource pile. So if the rope was 30 blocks tall, perhaps you get to the bottom and there's a stack of 15 lengths of rope. The actual number of lengths per block destroyed, and how long those lengths are when used in the world would end up being a balancing question.

    Uses:

Rope launcher - Use to launch ropes and grappling hooks.

Rope bridge - I envision using this to cross vast distances such as between treetops, cliffs, and the like.

To keep things more challenging, there would need to be limitations such as a limited rise-to-run ratio so it remains a bridge, not a ramp. Perhaps one block of inclination/declination for every 10 blocks of length.

Also, you'd have to construct iron mounts and plant them at each end of the span. And the mechanism for placing them would show an "in range" reticle, perhaps green or red highlights the layer of blocks before you, indicating whether the location you're at meets the rise/run requirements to hold a bridge between it and the mount you're facing across the gap.

Cable car - I envision basically a minecart that's suspended from the rope and automatically propels itself across the gap regardless of in/declination. This could be used for both travel and resource movement. For crafting I was thinking the same recipe as a minecart, but with a redstone dust in the top center spot.
Grappling hook - Used for launching ropes to climb cliffs or trees. Thinking rope would be consumed with each use. I also see the ropes disintegrating after a span of time, leaving the hook to recover later.
Zip lines - Essentially the reverse of a grappling hook. Fire a grappling hook into the ground from a high place and use another hook to slide down the line.
    PVP considerations -
I was thinking cable cars, zip lines, and rope bridges could be destroyed by cutting or TNT while someone's on them. It could be an expensive trap, but fun. Put TNT by the mount brackets and blow it up when someone else comes across. Maybe add the ability to put a pressure plate on the bridge to trigger the TNT.

    Potential related construction -

Ore collector - This is actually an idea I've had for original minecars, but would work for cable cars as well. Place below the end of a cable car line and when a cable car full of ore reaches it the ore is dumped into the collector which holds it like a chest and would be interacted with like a chest.

With minecars I would imagine it being placed below the track and the ore being dropped into it when the car passes over, or possibly to the side and below with the car tipping to empty. But that would require new animation.

Need a link that DOESN'T go through ADFLY! Last time I tried to get a mod through Adfly I spent 2 hours digging the Sirefef virus out of my computer.

If its donations you need, ask for them. But forcing people to go through a virus-infested ad site is just wrong.

posted a message on What do I do about a nether world with no fortress?
Got it, and at first I wondered how this was supposed to help, but then I turned my brain on.

So I'm back "home". Thank you for the help. :)

Ok, I think I just shot myself in the foot. I made the mistake of deleting my DIM-1 folder while I was IN the Nether. Now I have no portal home. :( Any ideas?

No luck. The map looked very close to the original, and still no nether structures.

Yeah, lots of mineshafts and a couple strongholds. But no village so far as I can tell.

I'll give the folder deletion a try and post back if it doesn't work.

I've wandered near and far in my world's nether dimension and there's no nether fortress, no bridges to one, heck there's not even a single block of nether stone! I verified this with MC X-ray.

This is the second world I've generated (both generated under 1.2.5) that hasn't had a nether fortress in it. In fact, neither has had a village in it either. And I had it set to generate structures as well. Well, all the default settings actually, including a random seed.

I'm at a complete loss as to what's going on, and I've put a lot of work into this world and would hate to have to abandon it.

Does anyone have a clue what's going on?

posted a message on The sign man
I can't believe no one's mentioned the idea of "Burma Shave" signs. (Guess I'm just too old)

They could spawn standing up (not on walls) in long natural tunnels or in abandoned mines. Here's an example:

    "Deep beneath the earth"

"You swing your pick and shovel"

    "Finding diamonds creates your mirth"

    "Then the hiss reveals trouble"

    "Creeper Shave"

Then as long as they spawn in sets and roughly the same distance apart, they could be lots of fun.

posted a message on Require a compass to use F3
The problem with this is that it blurs the line between a debug screen and a game feature.

Its roughly equivalent to seeing the timecodes and stuff during a TV show. We know they exist, but the home viewer isn't supposed to see them under normal circumstances.

So by making a compass (a game feature) a requirement for a debug function, you cross the line between the two.

The compass, in its current form, is pretty much useless unless you set up base camp where you originally spawned. You should be able to place a marker that your compass points to, like a beacon.

posted a message on Suggestions: Dead Biome
This could actually be a great idea. Only you'd have give people a reason to NOT avoid it. Perhaps higher concentrations of gold, diamond, and other rare materials towards the center, but not so clustered that people make a bee-line for the center, mine the hell out of it, and vacate.

And to TRULY make it a worthwhile biome it should also extend downward, say 30 tiles? And make the dirt/stone somewhat harder than normal so you can't burrow to the center and get all the goodies like Bugs Bunny plucking carrots from underground.

Higher chances of running into mob spawners?

    Poison rivers?

    Aggressive vegetation?

    The ideas go on.

As you'll see in the pic below, the diamond leggings act as though you're sitting even if you're standing. Don't know if this has been reported, but thought I should.
