posted a message on AFK Fish Farming -- Cheaty?

No bots necessary. You just go AFK with something heavy on your right mouse button. With a mending fishing rod you fish overnight and in the morning you have 4 to 6 double-wide chests full of enchanted bows, rods, books, fish, and other items.

Curious what folks think of AFK Fish farming for enchanted books and so forth. I've always thought it was a little cheaty. What do you think?

posted a message on Never Branch Mine While Sleepy...

This is not the first time, I'm embarrassed to say, that I fell asleep while branch mining but my fingers kept pressing the left mouse button, and the "W" key.

On and on I tunneled while softly snoring to myself. I woke up when I heard TICK! TICK! TICK! and discovered myself swimming in lava. :VV: :VV: *sigh* There goes all my gear. On the upside I found a nice lava lake and cave to explore.

posted a message on Is Minecraft DYING?

It's not "the new thing" anymore, and so its popularity has declined, but I wouldn't say it is dying. I set it aside for awhile sometimes when new games come along, but I always go back to it, but I don't seem to be going back to the new games. At some point updates will stop coming and servers will get harder to find and then you can probably be justified in saying it's "dying".

Hardcore fans will probably keep it alive for a long time, and the modding community is still churning out new content as well. In fact when updates cease, that encourages modders more because they know their mods won't suddenly stop working with a new release.

Wonderful! I completed a map wall on the realms server I use, and got another episode in my survival let's play in the can, then recorded the next one as well. Definitely a good day. How was yours?

    Remember the good old days?

Sounds like a grass-is-greener kind of thing to me. Minecraft is what it is, thank heavens things change.

posted a message on All my villages loiter in one building
    Quote from foxdimi»

Can someone here provide a good solution to this?

In my experience working with villagers, they tend to have a "drift" to them. Over time, they will all migrate to one corner of the village, especially if you build more houses for them. I don't know how to prevent them from doing this, but it seems like they have a tendency to move toward other villagers, and the "village" moves with the mass of villagers.

One suggestion I've seen online (but one that I haven't tried), is to entrap some villagers in each house. Cut a hole in the floor of each house, drop a couple villagers in it, stick a torch in there and cover it back up. This will (theoretically) spread the village out and keep the village center more central by force. You can still have plenty of villagers wandering around, but you need to also entrap some.

I've not tried that myself so I don't know if it works. If you try it, please post what happened here.

posted a message on No Mining In Minecraft Anymore?

I think of all the farms an AFK fish farm is the most unbalancing. An endless supply of good food, XP, and scads of enchanted books, bows, and fishing rods. I've built them, and it is very satisfying sorting through all that loot, but very quickly you will have as you note, mending on everything and top notch gear.

posted a message on Does minecraft need another boss?

Does minecraft need a new boss? What boss would you add in? I would add a lord ghastly boss.

I don't play for the bosses, so it makes no nevermind to me. I think the Wither, the Elder Guardian, and the End Dragon are plenty.

posted a message on Please HELP!

I'm so bored. I dont know what to build in minecraft.

You know what I find helps? Have a story for your world. Having a story drives creation. If you are just playing survival (or creative) and that's the whole story, you're going to have to seek inspiration somewhere.

Go to Biome Finder and start entering seeds until you find a world with a spawn that interests you. Once you get there, decide why you are there. Who are you? What is your purpose in this world?

"I'm a spy sent by the Duke of Eastbrook to infiltrate Wetchison House and collect intelligence on their diamond mine."

"I'm a space traveller that just crashed on this planet and I need to repair my ship."

"I'm a particle physicist who accidentally discovered time travel and now I am trapped in the past (or the future.) How do I get home?"

Or if you build a house, maybe it isn't for you. Who is it for, what's their story? It's the home of Gavin McIntoch, horse trader.

Once you start to develop a story, the story will have needs for you to fill in. Gavin's a horse trader, so I'm going to need a horse ranch. Where do the horses get their feed? Gavin buys it from the widow Archer, whom he is secretly in love with. Now you need to build widow Archer's farm, or shop, or both. And perhaps a church since wedding bells may be in the future.

Stories are like fires, the more details you feed them, the bigger they grow and the more details they need, which in turn generates things for you to build. When you get tired of one story, just load up another minecraft world and start a new story, or branch off from the current story and follow a minor character into a whole new storyline.

Anyway, that's what I like to do.

But Wheat, Potatoes, Carrots, Paper, Wool etc. can also be farmed in large quantities; does this also make the whole bartering system pointless? There's little practical difference between trading those items for a currency item which you then trade for new items, vs. trading a farmable item for new items directly.

Well, yeah but you can't trade wheat endlessly to the same villager, there are checks built into the trading system to make it more difficult to abuse a particular trade.

posted a message on Why bother with auto-farms?

Usually there isn't a practical need for such projects, yeah? I think a lot of people try building auto farms just for the fun/challenge of it. It's "something to do".

As noted by others in the thread, veggies and wheat are harvested and replanted by testificates, and you can find examples of automated farms that employ (well, enslave really) villagers for that purpose. Having built many automated farms over the years, though, I have to agree, they don't get you much practical value... you might as well just harvest by hand unless you are doing something very special (like building a temple out of netherwort blocks or something like that) that requires massive quantities of farmable resources.

Usually for me, a 9x9 plot of land with a water block in the center is fine. Harvesting/planting by hand is plenty fast enough.
