posted a message on Am I The Only One Having Issues With Wither Skellys?

The world where it worked was a while ago, before 1.2. The terrible rates I've been seeing are after 1.2.4. My understanding is the platforms should be directly under fortress walkways. I created one, but I haven't seen a single spawn there. I'd say try for the elytra to easily find more nether fortresses. But you don't need to defeat the dragon again, you can just keep going further from the gateway you already have.

Yes. Those are called gateways (so as to not confuse them with end portals or nether portals). A new one appears every time the dragon is defeated up to 20 max. But you don't need elytra for any of that.

I've seen wither skeletons spawn in the current update, but the rate is really low. In the time it took to tame a blaze spawner one spawned. It may be possible to increase the rate by increasing the spawning area. In previous updates (when rates were better) I built three high floors under the main fortress levels and that worked well. But it's time consuming and I haven't done it recently.

Sounds relatively easy to do, but you'll need to provide more details. What do you have already (pictures would be best)? What exactly is the behavior/timing you're looking for?

Why do you need Elytra if you're going to respawn the dragon?

End cities generate randomly, and they can generate in a number of variations. Plenty smaller variations will not have the ship. I've even seen larger ones without shulkers. You should explore the outer islands more if you want to get an elytra. BTW, the random city generation means you can backup your world, go explore, and if you don't find a city with a ship in a reasonable area you can restore the game and the land will be the same (so you can re-use a screen capture of a map to plot your path) but the cities will be generated randomly again (different cities in different places).

Oh, and I've noticed that the spawn rates of wither skeletons is really low right now. It is non-zero, but really sucks.

Lol. If peaceful wasn't an option for the bet he should have said so. You didn't know enough about the game to ask up front. Not like you switched over to creative, I don't think anyone would debate that's cheating a bet like this.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully you now have a game you'll have fun playing.

posted a message on Handling of Villages

If I find a village I want to keep populated, I do the torch thing also (or I put jack-o-lanterns level with the ground). But I don't put up a wall. I up the number of doors in the village by expanding doorways and adding houses so iron golems will spawn naturally. Helps to throw lots of bread at the villagers just after putting in the doors to get their numbers up. After that, everything seems to work fine. Just be sure the lighting is effective a little way out of the village so the golems can keep up with the zombies that wander in.

Worst case scenario, the village gets wiped out and you need to cure a couple new ones (after adjustments to the protection of course, usually just more doors for me so I get more than one golem). Curing is easy if you have the gold, potions, and a curing station.

posted a message on Impossible Challenge??

You're playing the java edition. You're posting in the wrong part of the forum. "Minecraft" refers to the version that used to be pocket edition, now sometimes referred to as bedrock (which is the name of the engine it's built on). There's enough difference between the bedrock editions and java that my help could lead you the wrong way in some cases and i don't know what those cases would be. You could move over to the windows 10 version of you want, it's part of bedrock (at no cost if you own the java edition, from what I've read).

If your going to start over you should find a recommended seed that has a stronghold near spawn. There are sections of this forum all about seeds. But look in the java section. The seeds here will be similar, but probably not the same. Generation between the editions is similar, but i don't know if I recommend one to you it will work out (i have a great seed for your challenge for bedrock). BTW, to speed things up, you can create the same world again (using the same seed) and do things like find the stronghold with commands, making the search much faster.

You don't have much time to meet the challenge. Based on you starting over, I get the feeling the list of items you need is much larger than you know. I will attempt to give you an idea of what you need just to get to the dragon, you'll need more to defeat it.

To get to the end you need to enter the end portal. The end portal only appears in a stronghold, which is always under the well of a village, but not all villages. To find it, (unless you use the creative mode commands strategy) you will need eyes of ender to find it (an unknown number), and then you'll need up to 12 more eyes to open it. The eyes are made from ender pearls and blaze powder. I already told you about blaze rods, which are used to make the powder. The pearls are the time consuming part. They drop from a rare mob called an enderman. Enderman are rare enough I'm guessing your roommate is betting you can't get them fast enough. What everyone seems to forget is you can trade with priests to get them. But to trade for enough you need something like 60 emeralds. You can trade for emeralds, but that's lots of resources you have to gather first. And just for completeness, you have to find a nether fortress to get blaze rods. To get into the nether you need obsidian, which can only be mined with diamond pickaxes. So you need lots of diamonds or tool smith villagers and emeralds.

Villages are randomly spread across the world. You just have to explore to find them. Better than me explaining every detail of the above, you should look it up on the wiki. Once you have obsidian, a nether portal is easy. For navigation, use maps. A locator map is required for exploration in my opinion. Again, look it up.

Pretty good progress. What system are you playing on, and what version? I like underground bases, very practical. If your bet doesn't stipulate the difficulty, I suggest switching to easy (maybe even peaceful for most of the time).

I've noticed that peaceful mobs spawn like crazy right now. You may not need to make a farm, but just wander around and kill what's around.

I can help you make a fully automatic chicken farm, but you'll need redstone dust and quartz from the nether.

An enchantment table is helpful, but you won't need good enchanted stuff until the dragon fight (i guess, depending on your skill level). To make the table you'll need obsidian and diamonds. You'll need a diamond pickaxe to get the obsidian. There are two ways to get a diamond pickaxe. First, the standard way, find diamonds, craft a diamond pickaxe. The second is to trade with a tool smith villager. I like the second way because the pickaxe you get that way is already enchanted. But it can be problematic if you don't have materials to trade for emeralds. Let me know if you want to trade for it, I can give you good methods for that.

You should go to the nether soon, to get to the end you'll need blaze rods from there. To get to the nether you either need obsidian, or a lava source and a bucket to make the portal. Once in the nether find a fortress and kill some blazes. You should be able to do that with iron armor on. But be careful, it's easy to die there. And usually death in the nether involves fire or lava, which means losing items. After your first visit, if you have blaze rods, nether wart, and magma cream you can craft portions of fire resistance, which make the nether much less dangerous.

If you have questions on specifics for any of that stuff, let me know. I'm happy to go into more detail. After you get blaze rods, let me know and I'll tell you the fastest way to get through the next part of getting to the end.

Ok. I just hopped into my current world and did a few shots showing the critical parts. Please excuse the backgrounds, I'm currently in progress on a base in an emptied out ocean monument.

The first is cloning a map. I use classic UI, I don't know what pocket does (I'm playing on an Android device). Notice the recipe book does not show anything in regards to cloning, you have to put in the maps yourself. You can also clone maps on an anvil. The second shows the cloned maps in my hand and in an item frame on the portal. Last image is just after passing through the portal. I moved a little way away so the two arrows have some separation. Notice the maps are fully zoomed out. One pixel on that map represents 16 block in the overworld, and two blocks in the nether. As long as the arrows are right on top of each other, you'll be within two blocks, which has worked great for me. Don't zoom the map at all and moving one block in the nether will move 8 pixels on the map.

Not that I know of (but I don't watch many YouTubers). I'll try to explain in detail.

Make a locator map and with it in hand hit "create map" while standing next to the portal in the overworld. Then, clone your map by putting the map and a blank map (doesn't matter which kind) onto a crafting table. Put one of the maps into an item frame on the portal. The map on the portal and the map in your inventory should now have a green arrow, which represents your portal. Go into the nether and look at your map. The green arrow is the overworld portal, the white arrow is your overworld equivalent position. Make the new nether portal where you're standing when the white and green arrows are on top of each other.

If any of that doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll post pictures.

Not sure what you mean by "bottom hopper", but there is an easy way to expand chests. Just have cascading chests. It requires each additional chest to be lower than the last. But just put a hopper that feeds the upper chest into the lower one. If that doesn't make sense I can post a picture.

posted a message on Iron Farm Witch Problem

Lightning can turn villagers into witches. I've seen this happen in my iron farms as well. According to the wiki, the lightning will convert them of it hits within 3-4 blocks. Theoretically, you can stop witches from appearing if you have a roof that covers your villagers and extends 4 blocks beyond the pens. I have not tested this.
