Thanks guys - I did a killall with something someone referred to as sig 9 (yes, you may mock me for my lack of knowledge). Apparently the immediate nature of that stop is better on Minecraft software than a plain killall - again, I don't understand the mechanics therein, all I can say is it worked. Server remains uncorrupted and everyone is happy again.
Another thing you'll have to consider is your upload speed. I was self-hosting a server that ran just fine unless I had more than 3 people on it. After 3, though, my connection couldn't handle it, even though my ram was fine (running 4GB).
I'm very new Minecraft hosting and, when attempting to restart my server I forgot to run it in a screen session. Now I don't know how to shut it down so that I can restart it with a screen.
When I try to run it with the screen command I get a notice that the port is already bound, and the 'is there already an active server?' notice. The server does not terminate when I leave my SSH session, either.
I just got one with allgamer.net - a guy named Clinton runs the site and spends a lot of time on these forums. The server comes pretty much set to go, which is perfect for me. Though I do plan on learning how to admin the server and pick linux back up (which I haven't looked at in years), I wanted to get something going for my friends. So far, it's been good.
If you're more technical, you may find other options suit your specific needs better. As a starter, I've been happy with allgamer so far.
