I'd really like to have owls that come out at night. Mostly just for the ambiance it would bring to the forests, but they could drop feathers too if you really wanted to kill them.

I like the voiceless pain sound because it's androgynous.

I think implementing genders (with fitting damage sounds) would solve everybody's problem. I'm sure it would be a welcome addition to SMP as well. No vocal pain reaction simply doesn't make any sense.

How about they combine they old and new sound for falling, and maybe make a female falling sound too.

I would support that as long as the bone breaking sound wasn't heard unless you actually fall something like 5 or 6 blocks. The old "OOF" made more sense in pretty much every damage scenario, the bone breaking is confusing in anything other than a long fall. Hopefully the damage noise will eventually be tailored to the kind of damage being taken. A gargle for drowning, a stabbing sound for getting shot with an arrow, etc. And I'd fully support a girl hurt sound too. They should just full on make a girl model so lady players don't have to play as a man in drag all the time.

I still think there should be a vocal reaction to getting hurt. It's strange to fall far enough to break my bones but have no vocal expression of pain. Unless Steve is a mute like Chell (even she had a vocal reaction to pain) it doesn't make sense he would have no vocal reaction to getting hurt.

For people who want to be able to start climbing from the sides of a ladder at ground height but still stand on the top via collision box you do the following.

Use vines for the bottom 2 blocks of your ladder. Use a ladder for the top block of your ladder. You can then approach the ladder from any side and begin climbing without a colision box getting in your way, and you can stand on the top.

That doesn't work. When you try to climb from a vine to a ladder you just get stuck on the bottom of the ladder collision box.
If you're in a 1X1 shaft you can make it work by pressing against the wall opposite the ladder and working your way onto the ladder that way, but for free standing ladders it isn't an option.

    Quote from ThePilotGuy

That would be rather hard to implement though... You would need to add code so you can't climb through the vines. Plus, I don't believe you can change a characteristic of a "block" with a key without having some sort of lag. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Btw, what's with the different text?

I'll admit I know nothing about coding so I have no idea how difficult that would be to add to the game. I just think walking up to a vine and holding a "climb" button to climb up and down the vine then and releasing the button to let go of the vine would feel very natural. I'm sure someone could figure out how to do it without putting too much strain on the game, but who knows. Hopefully Jeb will just add rope eventually and make my idea obsolete. Also the different text is a font called Georgia. It's in the little formatting bar, or whatever you call it.

It would be cool to have free hanging vines be climbable.
    My idea is this:
When walking through free hanging vines they should act as they always have (letting you pass right through), but if you walk within a certain distance of the vine (1 block away would be good, maybe right on the block the vine occupies would be better) and hold ctrl you would grab onto the vine. As long as you are holding ctrl you are able to use W and S to climb up and down the vine. If you let go of ctrl you let go of the vine (hopefully not falling to your death in the process). I think that function would add a lot of fun possibilities to Minecraft.

I installed OptiFine_1.0.0_HD_AA_D3 and it works great but I notice javaw.exe will cap out my ram which is 4GB then I will lag terribly. Is there any feature that would suck up that much ram? I notice the problem happens when I am using teleporters for IC2 or am constantly moving in 1 direction. This causes the ram to skyrocket and never go down, I have to reboot minecraft in order to be good again.

That's exactly what's happening to me. Look at this. I think that's the worst I have ever seen it.

I keep getting huge lag spikes followed by a freeze that forces me to bring up task manager to shut down Minecraft. I'm playing with the second preview on the lowest settings. I'm not sure whats wrong but it's never happened to me when I've used Optifine before.

I wish the passive mobs would only jump when they can actually move up a block instead of constantly jumping whether it's possible for them to move up a block or not. My barnyard looks like someone poured repulsion gel all over the grass. It looks ridiculous to have 15 cows jumping up and down against the fences all day.

I wonder if it would be possible to keep the hitbox on top of the ladders but get rid of it on the bottom and sides. That way you wouldn't smash into them when walking down a 1 block wide tunnel and you would be able to stand on them. I don't know if that's possible, but if it is that would solve most of the complaints I've read so far.

The new one is more unisex, since there's no voice to it. It makes sense to have it instead when you consider that.

Does it make sense to hear bones cracking when you fall 4 blocks or when drowning? Also, the character is a man, so why not have it be a man's voice?

posted a message on I've been playing MC since Alpha 1.2.6 and...
I agree that it sucks there are so many unfinished features, but I don't see what the gripe about enchantments is. I mean, enchantments make it easier and faster to mine, and you don't have to do anything that you didn't do before to get enchantments (except build the table obviously). Enchantments are just an extra reward for killing, which most people do on a regular basis anyway. I do wish they would finish the features they tacked on for the "official release" though. Just keep in mind that the game is practically still in beta in the sense that it's still being updated and will be for some time. I think having an "official release" was a big P.R. mistake for Mojang because "official release" implies a finished product, and it's obvious that Minecraft is far from a finished product.

Also, Minecraft's performance is pretty terrible considering its graphics. My laptop can run Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 flawlessly on high settings but Minecraft lags pretty bad on the lowest possible settings. I hope they work on that in the future too.
