So im wondering... whos going to Minecon or thinking about going there? Me being from Canada, I dont know if i should buy tickets and book a flight or just wait till next year
Anyways, if you guys are thinking about going or are going, feel free to tell us!
Also: Anyone who isnt from the London area going (EU or America)?
No, I'm not running Bukkit. But I'll give your idea a try later tonight! Building off of the previous post, the OP spawn protection seems to be the issue I'm having.
Thanks for your reply!
If you have that problem,
check your sever.properties folder and you should be able to change it there
And yes, I too help run a server. But we are whitelisted, have less than a dozen players, and it's strictly 'Hard Vanilla' with no UI mods, so not really a good example. However, I used to run UO (yup... Ultima Online) custom servers, so yeah, I know all about the overhead in not only money, but time. I know it can be quite expensive. I also know there's MC server operators that go through all this trouble JUST so they can turn a profit. Those that do so illegitimately are making players gun-shy to even try to find a well-managed legitimate server, and in turn reducing the potential player base for the legit servers.
Yep, were on the same page
Minecraft servers arent as profitable then a lot of people think You and I both know how much commitment and money you need just to run a sucessful one... And when people charge money for game ruining stuff like ingame currency, it definatly crosses the EULA rules and shouldnt be tolerated. UO custom servers.. tell me about those ahaha
If i were you, try making a fresh server file. I cant figure out why you have ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib1.dll in your mod folder when its not a mod. Make sure you keep all your worlds and plugins if youre going to make a fresh server!
If youre running it on Bukkit and have spawn protection on, you wont be able to build. Try running out 50+ blocks from spawn and then see if she can build. If that doesnt work and youre running Permissions, you might want to check your permissions.yml and make sure that - modifyworld is there for your starter group/rank.
If you still have any problems, feel free to PM me or reply!
I'm confused.... you quote my reply as if to argue, but your statement says nothing contradictory to mine. My quote was on WaterDude's response, which essentially appeared to try to generalize ALL server operators as legit 'workers'. My reply states exactly what yours does. It's fine to accept donations to help finance one's efforts, so long as it doesn't violate the EULA. Neither I, nor the OP attempted to indicate otherwise. But to do so in a manner that violates the EULA is illegal, and should not be tolerated.
No, i dont want to argue WaterDude's response had nothing to do with breaking the EULA rules. He was arguing that because the OP said "other then that the owners are lazy, just setting up servers instead of getting a job to earn money" which is not true. WaterDude said "All servers require some kind of monetary input, be buying a physical server setup, renting a server, electricity, web hosting services, domain registration, etc" because all minecraft servers whether hosted at home or by renting a server cost money. Just because some people dont pay for server hosting doesnt mean they dont loose money. I dont remember in WaterDudes whole post that he said anything about the EULA rules being broken.
Owning a server (whether hosted at home or by renting) = Money Loss
It may be a job; but if they're violating the EULA, it's illegal and actionable. That's like saying selling drugs on the street corner "is a job". Sure it is, and the OP isn't saying its not.
As for what his thread will accomplish? EDUCATION and awareness. How does that saying go again.... something like, "all it takes for evil to succeed is for justice to turn a blind eye". ... insert "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" meme.....
The EULA says youre allowed to accept donations from players. I bet that if they didnt allow donations, atleast 90% of all servers wouldnt be up. If youve ever owned a Minecraft server, its nearly impossible to keep up by using your own money. Hosting a minecraft server is a job. It takes a lot of time, effort and commitment to keep it up and worth while. I agree that if its violating the EULA its unlawful, but making a server and accepting donations and following the EULA is perfectly fine.
When i was going to purchase tickets for Minecon 2013, the second i got in, they said i could only purchase 1 ticket. I waited like 7 hours just to get a message saying that i couldnt get the 2 tickets i needed. They sold out so fast
If running your server just for fun why should you have to ask donations? Wouldn't you be able to cop the fee of running a server out of your own money instead of asking for donations? What if you gain enough money to run the server for say 3 months but you only pay for a months worth of server up-time and use the money for something else? How can you (as a server owner) prove that you are using the donations legitimately?
For my server, im paying way over 200$+ a month just for hosting. Add developer costs, website hosting and a teamspeak server, im paying $350 just for one month. If i get lets say $500 one month, i use the extra money towards the next month of hosting. The only money ive made from my server were ad's that i ran on my website. I dont run a server that constantly has auto messages that say 'donators get extra features' or anything like that. If someone likes my server enough to donate, they can. Those are my rules. I dont force or beg someone to donate.
As a server owner myself, without donations.. there would be no such thing as my server. The cost to keep my server up is through the roof and without some type of money coming from my server would be nearly impossible for me to keep up with the bills. You need to remember that hosting a server without donations makes the owner loose money. Even without paying for hosting, you still need to pay for electricity and internet which can be pricey at times. If youre talking about servers that seperate the paying users and the non paying users, these should definatly be shut down. I think another one that crosses the line is the 'Minecraft Party' server which makes you pay after a while and non-payers must either spectate or quit.

Theres 2 ways you can do this:
1. Do it manually by /fly if youve got Essentials
2. If you got Permissions/Group Manager, theres ways you can give them /fly automatically when they join.
If you want more information on how to automatically give /fly, feel free to PM me!
NOTE: if you only want them to be able to fly through spawn, you'll need to make a fly zone which i can teach you how to make!
Goodluck!
