Awesome, though not very pretty lol.
What if you made a glass tube that the carriage travels through? That would be cool if you could work around the slime blocks sticking to it

It's pretty fast too! Resource friendly! (except sticky pistons). World download at bottom.
Uploaded with ImageShack.com
(The bottom two layers are sticky pistons, the top layer are normal pistons.)

Additional Portcullis Closer! (All normal pistons.)
The design uses a lever, but if you want to use a button (and you do), just insert this simple pulse-lengthener to your button. (It's a normal piston.)
How it works:
So basically, I managed to create a small circuit that just makes sure the pistons extend and retract in the correct order initially. Not to brag or anything... but it doesn't even use repeaters. ya. It's the bundle of torches on the right of the machine (when facing the front). Then I just have a falling edge detector to retract the top row of pistons a second time.
Now it's fast, but it's not fast enough to keep up with the falling sand, unfortunately. I'm not sure it is possible to make it faster, and I've tinkered with it a lot, but if you can, I'd love to see it! Bonus points if you keep it small!
