posted a message on Is it just me? Or does my server suck? Or is the the community?

Minecraft is oversaturated in almost every area, including servers. Unless you have something unique and enjoyable while still being profitable your server will likely crash and burn. Most creative/survival servers simply do not cut it anymore (and there are literally thousands of these), as most of the original players are burnt out or have moved on. Considering this, the community has shifted more towards custom minigames/PVP. Even if you have spleef, survival games, creative plots, factions, survival, and <insert all other copypaste gamemodes here>, you will probably not be able to retain players unless you offer something that no one else does (and remember, not everything unique is necessarily something people will like). For example, look at the featured/paid servers on MC forum. Considering this site's traffic, you'd think they would be full, but they can barely fill 1/4 of their slots. Also, even if you have the best server that was custom modded from the ground up, in order to get it seen you're going to have to pay a youtuber to do a video on it (or get it on a high traffic site) if you want any kind of decent growth speed. Think of it like becoming a minecraft youtuber. If you try to do mod reviews, lets plays, minigames, or anything else that someone with 1mil+ subs does, then you're most likely not going to make it. A lot of these people started back in 2010-2012 when the game was developing. Now, there are more minecraft videos on youtube than any other game, and theres a channel for almost everything popular in minecraft I can think of. Same idea with servers.

TL;DR: If you cannot retain players, your server is likely similar to a bunch of others out there, and unless you make it stand out (which is very hard to do now) it will probably never grow.

Get rid of 1.9 and just have it named "minecraft_server.jar".

    To make a start file:

Create a new text document in your server folder, copy the below into it and save it as a batch file (.bat). Make sure your server jar is called minecraft_server.jar. Then, run the batch file. It should open a command prompt. Change the ram amount by replacing the 1Gs with the gigs of RAM necessary (I would recommend starting with 2).

    java -Xmx1G -Xms1G -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui.

Neat mod. Not the most original ideas, but I like how they're all in one, configurable and lightweight mod.

Try localhost with the port. For example: "localhost:25565"
