Lol.. sorry. I can occasionally rant without realizing it. I had an... extended reaction though :3

I never turn down a game for it's graphics. I'm an old-school player at heart and treasure gameplay over graphics. I'm glad I discovered MInecraft.

I agree with this, all except the old-school gamer bit, as I haven't been around long enough to be an old school gamer. I'm always disappointed by people who turn down a game for its graphics. Usually, as is the case with Minecraft, they fit the game's overall feel.

But this thread isn't about graphics, so I will leave it at that before I rant again... 0-o

    :D

I'm not entirely sure where I heard about Minecraft. It was quite a while ago. I read a magazine article a while after I'd heard about it. The article talked about a game that was like Minecraft, and so it reminded me that I had heard about it.

I went and looked it up, because I remembered being interested in it. I found the website and read about the game, which got me more interested. I looked into the price and saw how ridiculously low it was. I had recently celebrated my birthday, and still had some money left over.

This was when I started asking for it quite often. It didn't take too long for my parents to say yes. The problem was that on the week they said I could get it, I was at my dad's house, and he has extremely slow internet connection, and we were slightly confused as to how things worked, so I had to wait to download it at my mom's house. While I waited I discovered Minecraft Classic, and the internet wasn't so slow that it wouldn't run, so I played that. I spent a surprising amount of time with it; exploring the caves, flooding places, messing with towers and holes. It was epic. I'd never seen a game with that kind of freedom to do whatever you want to.

Then I found Paul Soares Jr.'s "How to Survive Your First Night" video on the website, and it blew my mind. I had expected to download something similar to Classic when I got the full version. This video showed me how badly I had underestimated Minecraft. The terrain, the gameplay, and even crafting all got infinitely more exciting with that video. In the few days I had left to wait, my mind was completely occupied by Minecraft.

I finally got it around the time when Minecraft switched to Official 1.0. I had an interesting first world; it spawned me on an island with nothing but sheep. My second world is still my favorite, and it's also the only reason I don't play much survival anymore. I've never been so far into a survival world as I was in my second one. I was building a giant wall around my epic and rather historical (it got burned down and I rebuilt it) house when the world got corrupted somehow. I now don't play much survival.

So my initial reaction to Minecraft has a bit of story to it, but there it is. I still play quite a bit.

So after getting to the final boss of Herobrine's Mansion (I liked the map), I have decided to give Spellbound Caves another go. I think I've improved my nerd skills enough to be able to get a good bit of it done at least.

    It's piece by piece.

I think the point here is that the "pieces" are unexpected and going in an unexpected direction.

    A true enough statement, though.

    - Poor combat mechanics MC is not about combat you know... Would still be better if it had a better combat system.
    - Lack of interesting terrain generation Ever heard of epic mountain formations that still take place? I've seen LOTS of these epic ones! Yes, but mountains still end up being... mountains... Underwater terrain could use some real work, and the landforms in general seem very basic (mountains, rivers, swamps, ponds, and ravines seem to be the most interesting at the moment... They could add things like canyons, lagoons, er.. any kind of underwater landmark, etc.)
    - Few new features Witches, flower pots, a new boss, wither skeleton, mob heads, added bats, added beacons, added new farm plants, added coloring armor, and much, MUCH more.. Witches... Are fine, I guess. Flower pots are good yes, wither skeleton is basically a zombie with a sword, mob heads seem kinda awkward when used for anything other than a helmet. Bats are extremely laughable right now but are a cool idea. Beacons are kinda cool, but the area is so small, and the mobs are so easy anyway. By the time you can make a beacon you can have enchanted weapons that one-hit kill anything, so they're basically just cool aesthetics. New farm plants: "Oh, excellent... More FOOD!" I see the point in carrots for controlling pigs, but why do they have to be so hard to obtain? You have to hope that you'll find a village, or that a mineshaft will have one... I think they should be slightly more common, like what they did with cocoa. Coloring armor...... .... How often do you wear leather armor anyways? I guess this is another thing for aesthetics (hanging it on a wall), but that still ends up looking slightly odd, as most of the colors look kind of weird framed in dark brown. The new boss is an ultimate flying griefer... And like I said, beacons are practically useless for survival anyway.
    - Mob spawning is predictable and doesn't add any difficulty So you want a zombie inside of your house? A creeper too? It's not very predictable, you are in a cave and next thing you know you are ambushed my a horde of mobs. If you are in a cave and randomly get ambushed, it's because you didn't light it up enough. I personally don't have a problem with the spawning mechanics, but it IS predictable.
    - Newer mobs offer nothing unique Wither Skeletons give you coal, Withers give Nether Stars which will give you a beacon, Witches will drop potions, and so on... Wither skeletons drop one of the most easily obtainable objects in Minecraft... Great. They're actually really only there for their heads, which they rarely drop. So you get to do lots more mob grinding with that epic combat system Minecraft has... :\ Withers do give you nether stars, or rather, a nether star. Good for one beacon... One beacon that serves the same purpose as a dirt tower with torches on it but looks cooler. And you have to basically fight the wither in a place you don't mind totally losing. Or on a floating obsidian platform or something crazy like that. Good luck. Witches, if you can find and kill one, drop generally random and semi-useless items or a low level potion. I guess they can be a nice added bonus on the end of an "adventure" if you find one on your way home.

    Conclusion:
Survival needs work, but creative and mapmaking are getting a lot cooler. As a starting-out mapmaker, I like these updates, but as a survival player, they aren't helping much at all.

    So.

You'll really like the first episode of my Dev Com then.

As soon as my internet stops being fail, you can see it. :)

On the plus side, I'm building up a stock of episodes. I'd like to do a lot of them and have them ready, and set it up so I make episodes public on a regular basis. Like maybe every day at 5 PM or something.

Your internet better stop being fail soon. I'm looking forward to that. Your Dev Commentary of Spellbound Caves was really cool (Even though I only watched 3 or 4 episodes of it), and some of the stuff helped me come up with some ideas for my map in progress.

    Work, internet, work!

Okay... So, I like the looks of this update.

    But

Honestly? I'd like to see some of the long-term "planned" things being added in (Red Overworld dragons and a Sky Realm, anyone?). 1.2 and 1.3 were awesome updates, but where's all the awesome stuff they said they were gonna add a while ago? I can't really complain about anything in these updates, and I'm sure Vechs is extremely happy (as a fledgling mapmaker, I kind of am too), but I'd still like to see them add some of the things that were planned a while ago.

    - Audio Loops

    - Capture the Flag online game type

    - More Animals (Would love to see fish)

    - A legitimate way to get sponges (and a use for them)

    - Spike Blocks (meh.. lava or cactus works)

    - Red Dragon

I did notice that the sky realm thing was removed from this list, to some disappointment, but overall, this list actually seems to be getting longer for the most part. These updates are great, but I'd like to see some of the above things in an update sometime soon. :|

I would love to hear Vechs' opinion on the new 1.4 info, or anything related to updates (especially that long list of planned features on the wiki that have failed multiple times to make it into an update). :)

    That would be awesome.
