I feel like an idiot. I had the email all typed out to send to Mojang Support and it showed me this page before it would let me send it https://help.mojang.com/customer/en/portal/articles/542047-can-t-connect-to-minecraft-net so I downloaded MinecraftInstaller.msi, clicked repair, let it do it's thing, and everything works now. I was avoiding it because I kept seeing threads where people said that didn't work, but obviously my problem and their problem don't have to have the same solution and I should always try the easier stuff first. A lesson to remember.
I'm having the same problem. I just play single player and played for a while the day before yesterday just fine, then yesterday when I tried to launch the game and it only gave me the option to play offline, which I didn't want to do because I didn't want to reset the statistics (don't know if that still happens, but whatever). So, I tried to log in and got the same message. "Sorry, but we couldn't connect to our servers. Please make sure that
you are online and that Minecraft is not blocked. (SocketException: Connection reset)"
Just now I looked in Windows update and saw that an update for Microsoft Security Essentials was installed on the 17th, which would be around when it stopped working, so I disabled MSE and tried it and got the same message, except in parentheses instead of the socket exception it says (CertificateException: No subject alternative DNS name matching authserver.mojang.com found.) So I did a ipconfig /flushdns in command prompt and tried again and I just got another SocketException: Connection reset
So, next I tried to ping authserver.mojang.com and it timed out, so I tried doing a tracert to it and found that after it gets to 72.21.222.139 (an amazon server) the requests start timing out, but the next server in the line could just be ignoring pings, so that doesn't really mean anything right?
The most enjoyable way to get resources for me is caving. you'll get LOTS of iron, and you can get decent amounts of diamonds and such if you try to stay in the deepest caves as much as possible. And peaceful is boring, I say at least play on easy, otherwise it just feels pointless.
I do pretty much exactly the same as the way described in the OP. Number keys for 1-5, scroll wheel for the others, and scroll wheel if it's 1 or 2 slots away. I organize my bar so the 1 is Sword, 2 Torches, 3 Bow, 4 Pick, 5 Shovel since 1 and 3 are the easiest ones to hit in panic mode and I like to have my torches between my sword and bow since when caving torches is the thing you have out the most and need to be prepared to switch to a weapon.
Something weird I do is since I keep my food in the 0 slot, whenever I need to eat I'll hit 1 and then scroll up
I think I fixed it. I moved the end of the rail to the middle of the room, which is kinda in the way, but it's putting me in the same place every time I dismount now. I still think from now on my good gear is going in the ender chest before I ride out there.
What's really crazy about this is that I've almost gotten used to the weird horse, bed, and boat mechanics. I've come to expect weird stuff to happen with those, even though it is really stupid. But I thought minecarts were more stable.
After reading Sharpe103's post I just went into my creative world to play with cart dismount mechanics and found that there is a very predictable pattern. If there is a block to stand on 3 blocks to the northwest it will always put you there, even with a halfslab. If that block is removed it moves you south one block. Basically it moves like a typewriter, always trying to place on the block farthest north and west, until all the blocks in a a 6x7 rectangle are removed. Then it tries the next layer down, but in reverse. If the whole area is empty it puts you directly on top of the minecart.
But just now I went back in my world and road my minecart out to my ender farm again with nothing in my inventory, pressed shift, and fell into the void once again. This time I was paying attention and it placed me on the other side of the wall. Then I ran back to the place where the minecart was at (walked all the way there instead of riding) got in the minecart and immediately pressed shift. once again it dropped me in the void. I tried breaking the cart and placing it on the rail so that it's perfectly centered, got in, got out, and it put me in the same exact air block above the void.
WTF!? I don't understand at all! It's been working perfectly FOREVER and I know for a fact it continued to work in 1.7.2 for a while. I've changed nothing, the entire area is the same as it was 3 months ago, and now it's deciding to throw me into the void every single time even though the mechanics seem to work perfectly fine in a test world.
Edit: ^ I have over a stack and a half of diamonds, a highly efficient enderman farm, and a huge stockpile of enchanted books. I've been playing on this world for a long time and it's gotten to the point that it's almost like creative as far as materials are concerned. I could easily go get more diamonds very quickly and it takes about 5 minutes for me to get to level 30.
I think I'm just gonna man up and make all my stuff legit. I've had this world for a long time and suffered a lot of losses on it and never cheated on anything. (except using xray glitch for making sure areas are lit up for my mob farms, but hey, if it's in the game it isn't cheating)
I still really want to know how to make sure this never happens again. I guess I'll just put an extra layer of blocks under my rail, but I'm thinking it may have just teleported me outside the wall.
The wiki says, "When the minecart is exited (by pressing LShift), it searches for an adjacent or diagonal 2x2x3 area to put the player 1.5 blocks away from the cart. If none is available, the player is deposited directly above the minecart. Consequently, the player falls inside the minecart."
I would think that when checking where to put the player that it would check to see if there's ANY GROUND! Do I have to change my landing area so that the end is in the middle of a 5x5 square? That's just stupid, but I'll do it if that's what's going on. I just don't know how to tell if any changes fix it since this is the first time it's ever happened. But I really don't want it to happen again. Even If it's a really slim chance that means there's a chance, and that means it will happen again eventually.
At least 4, but I don't really remember. It's pretty easy to beat, so whatever. Beating it in hardcore mode however is really difficult. I've tried many times and only made it to the end once, but the dragon knocked me off the edge like 3 seconds after I got there.
I just loaded up my world that I've been playing on for a long time now and was doing some digging. I notice my shovel is about to break so I head through the nether to my End portal, hop in my mine cart out to my enderman farm (panda's design) that I've had up and running for a LONG time. I've probably road out there hundreds of times and just felt really safe. I've also been out there at least10 times in 1.7.2 with no problems.
But just now when I pressed shift to get out of the mine cart INSIDE my safe area I'm suddenly falling into the void. Of course, I did try to throw a bunch of enderpearls and hopefully hit something, but nope.
I had full diamond armor all with protection IV except I think I had fire protection and featherfalling on my boots, plus my awesome sword, bow, work pick, silk touch pick, shovel, and axe.
The thing is that I've lost similar amounts of diamond gear all at once before, but it was always MY fault. This really p*sses me off because I did nothing wrong! I was minding my own business, using a system that I've been using for a LOOONG time reliably and for no reason the game decides I should lose my nice things "just because".
Honestly, I've got like a stack and a half of diamonds, so getting new gear isn't much of a problem (just really irritating) but is this gonna happen again? How and why would this happen after at least 8 months to a year of using this no problem?
Edit: Also, I know there's a bug where if you break a minecart while you're in it and there's air under the block the tracks are on you'll fall through, but I always push shift (used to right click) so I don't have that problem.
Only if you're looking at it from the correct angle. For instance, look at the letter 'T'. Sure it's symmetrical if you draw the line vertically, but not if you draw it horizontally. Same case here.
So you're agreeing. There are multiple kids of symmetry, so really all you just said is "Yes, it is symmetrical bilaterally but not rotationally" which doesn't matter because all he said was that it's symmetrical.
Oh good, your slow clap processor knitted into this thing, so we have that.
For a second I was really happy someone posted the Portal reference I was thinking of until I saw "knitted". WTF? where would you get knitted from? That confused the hell out of me for a second lol.
On my most successful world (one where I've got like 150 diamonds) I have 8 double chests completely full of cobble, plus another 3 full of smoothstone. Most of this came from the huge 53 block diameter 44 block tall cylinder I hollowed out for a base. I used tnt from my mob farm for most of it.
On another note I wish you could lock the difficulty on a world because I just accidentally logged onto this world on peaceful (i usually play hard) and now I have to replace my zombie guards AGAIN! This is like the third time this has happened.
A couple of days ago I decided to try hardcore again now that we're in 1.6.2. I was doing pretty well, had 13 diamonds, an enchantment table, and a fortune pick, full iron armor with level 1 enchants.
One night I saw an enderman and decided to start collecting pearls, so I built a little roof to take him on and just as I looked at him to get him to come to me 3 zombies I wasn't aware of came over the hill. The 3 zombies quickly became 6-8 zombies and a baby, plus the enderman that I'd only managed to hit once. I suddenly realized it was time to run, so with 2.5 hearts I sprint toward the river that's about 30 blocks away so at least the enderman won't bother me while I eat a steak and wait for the zombies to catch up. But, when I'm exactly 4 blocks from the safety of the water the enderman teleports and kills me.
I think next time I'll wait until I've got potions before I go enderman hunting with these insane zombies.

I updated Java, still didn't work, double checked that minecraft.net is in Java's exception list (I did that once before when I had a similar problem), still didn't work, then I found this in a google search and tried it: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/unmodified-minecraft-client/1869832-sorry-but-we-couldnt-connect-to-our-servers?comment=6 which didn't work either.
I gave up there and now I'm trying again today.

I'm out of ideas. Help?
edit:
I just tried a nslookup and got this:
C:\Users\Jason>nslookup authserver.mojang.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: fd0d:edc3:e12a::1
*** UnKnown can't find authserver.mojang.com: No response from server
double edit: maybe we should contact mojang support?
