I, for one, dont't support ANY portion of this game, because it feeds kids the idea that our worlds are generated randomly over millions of lines of code, rather than built block-by-block by a loving creator. Pure blasphemy!
I'm not 100% sure, because I haven't really done any thorough testing, but my understanding is as follows:
If the water is in a cold biome, AND it is exposed to the sky (that is, it's in a spot where sunlight can directly hit it), it will eventually freeze.
When weather was introduced, Notch had it so water would only freeze when it was snowing, but he changed that so that water can freeze at any time, so long as the other conditions are met.
I use an SR Latch (look up the design on the wiki, it's fairly simple). Hook up the button to the "S" input of the circuit (to "set" the circuit), hook up a chain of delayed repeaters to the "R" input of the circuit (to "reset" the circuit), and hook up the output of the circuit to your door, or whatever you're using.
So essentially, the door opens when you press the button, stays open for however long it takes for the redstone signal to travel through the repeaters, and the door closes once the signal reaches the "R" input of the circuit.
That was Notch's original plan, but he said that before modding took off like it has now. At this point, I highly doubt he'll charge for post-release content.
Yes, I've been having occasional problems logging in today. I usually only notice it on patch days, so I'm guessing it's the large amount of people getting 1.7.2 that might be causing it.
I lost my first world a long while ago. I usually do restart with a new world any time a new major change occurs to map generation. I'll probably start over again when 1.8 rolls around with all the new adventure stuff.
Fine. An alternate method is to have a giant dragon head at one end of the room, the whole room sloped so that magma from the head flows down through channels along the entire room. Glass-less magma is more !!fun!!

Now this is an idea I can get behind.
