I don't think it will be another type of piston...
Minecraft blocks are locked on a grid, a short piston would presumably push a block in-between 2 blocks therefore throwing off the grid... Unless they introduce a new building system (which I doubt) or some sort of micro blocks.
It COULD be just some random debug block but im not sure.
I think they are making the updates with not many major changes. 1.9, 1.10 and 1.11 all together could of easily been one update but it wasn't. I would rather wait longer for big updates than smaller updates quicker. some could even argue that Mojang are getting lazy and pushing updates out more frequently to make it seem like they are constantly supporting the game. IMO it would look like they were supporting it more if they did this instead of rushing out updates.
I pretty much love everything about tekkit classic. Quarrying for new stuff, building big factories. I tried Attack Of The B Team and I quite liked it but I don't think its something I could really play in survival. Screwing around with the stuff in creative is efficient for me!
From what I can see it looks cool, But from the angle you took the screenshot from, It looks quite plain/un-detailed. Don't let this get to your head though, as alot of builder over detail everything

I think this would work just as a new type of villager.

Minecraft is a game locked onto a grid. this would probably push the game to its limits and break plenty of computers.

TL:DR TL:DR (Because your TL:DR was quite long lol.)
Minecraft needs more content to do early and late game and it gets too easy

Key:
Y=Yes
N=No
1. Is it the mods? Y/N/?
- If Y reinstall Forge
- If N reinstall Minecraft
(to test this change your version to "Use Latest Version"
2. Is the problem still happening AFTER you did step 1? Y/N/?
- if Y reinstall Java
- If N then go to step 4
3. Is it still happening AFTER you did step 2? Y/N/?
- If Y then reinstall windows (WORST CASE SCENARIO!)
- If N then go to step 4
4. Enjoy!
