I'm having the same issue. Just freezes and stops responding at the Mojang screen and I have to force close it. Updated my drivers, updated the latest version of java, reinstalled minecraft. Problem still remains. I don't have any issues with any other games so idk what the problem is.
I installed the Conquest texturepack which supports a wide selection of metadata blocks. To obtain these blocks, you have to use a version of minecraft prior to 1.8 with single player commands or worldedit and optifine/mcpatcher. I did all of these. To obtain the metadata blocks, you must use the command "//set <blockid>:<datavalue>". When I use this command it just shows the normal block variant, not the metadata block type. Can anyone help?
The current recipe for stone bricks seems too simplistic and easy to make. At a very early point in the game, one can make many stone bricks. Not only that, but the recipe for stone bricks doesn't make much sense (at least to me). I propose creating a more sensible crafting recipe for stone bricks, making them slightly more challenging to make.

This recipe would yield 10 stone bricks instead of 4, as 5 pieces of stone are being used as well as 4 pieces of clay. Doubling the stone content seemed the best way to balance this. The clay would act as 'mortar' if you will, holding the stone together. This would also give clay balls another use in the game.
Alright, during today's walk/brainstorming session my brain fixed on this idea. I like the ones that can use a lot of work. Let's see if I get every needed thing...
I love the general idea of it, but think the OP needs something else to it.
I don't mind the suggested recipe but I'd think Stone Slab-Stone Slab-Stone Slab--Open-Iron Ingot-Open--Stone-Stone-Stone would look more balanced to me just visually. Or Stone Slab-Stone Pressure Plate-Stone Slab--Open-Iron Ingot-Open--Stone-Stone-Stone which adds the movement aspect of the Pressure Plate, I like that better.
Clicking on the Pottery Wheel brings up a Single Input -> Single Output interface. Clay Balls go in one side and wet Pots come out the other side.
A Wet Flowerpot is made with 2 Clay Balls. A Wet Large Flowerpot takes 4, a Wet Small Urn takes 8, a Wet Urn 16, a Wet Large Urn needs 32 and, finally, a Wet Tub uses all 64 in the Stack. Wet Pots can be stacked in 64s and placed on a Crafting Table to be broken down into Clay Balls (making this a great way to transport and store Clay Balls). A Wet Pot cannot be placed.
Wet Pots are placed into a Furnace to be fired and hardened. This takes 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 operations on the various sized Wet Pots and outputs Flowerpots, Large Flowerpots, Small Urns, Large Urns and Tubs. Baked Pots can be placed on solid blocks. If broken with a Pickaxe they drop themselves; with anything else they drop Bricks equal to 75-100% of the Clay Balls used to make them.
A Flowerpot (which is made cheaper by 1 Clay Ball and 2 Furnace operations) is basically as is now, it will hold any short flower or a sapling.
A Large Flowerpot appears about twice the size and can hold any short flower or sapling as well as any "double" flower.
A Small Urn appears to fill the whole square but only to quarter-height. After being placed, a Small Urn can be clicked on with either a block of Dirt or a Bucket Of Water. If clicked on with Dirt, the Small Urn appears filled with dirt and can hold single and double flowers, saplings and, if clicked with a Hoe can grow Wheat as if on dry Farmland. If clicked with a Water Bucket, the Urn appears water-filled and this Water can be used to fill one Water Bottle. The Dirt or Water do not drop when broken.
An Urn is much the same but half-height. A Dirt-Filled Urn can hold double and single flowers, saplings and, if clicked with a Hoe can grow Wheat, Potatoes and Carrots as if on dry Farmland. As with a Cauldron, Water in Pots does not evaporate in the Nether.
A Tub appears as a slightly thicker Large Urn initially after placement and when placed by themselves or in any way that is not the following ways, they behave exactly as Large Urns. When placed in a 2x2 square and each 1x1 Tub filled with a Water Bucket the 1x1 Tubs merge into a water-filled 2x2 Tub which provides an infinite Water source. If 3 Tubs in the square are filled with Dirt and 1 with Water, the Tubs merge and appear filled with rich, dark dirt. The Dirt Tub can hold single and double flowers, can grow 1x1 Trees and 2x2 Trees and can grow Sugar Cane. If clicked with Hoe four times, a Tub can grow Wheat, Carrots and Potatoes as if on wet Farmland (even in the Nether...) and Pumpkins and Melons as if on dry land.
That should cover most of it. It looks balanced enough to me and useful enough to implement. At the very least, the decorative value is large.

The potter's wheel was one of the most significant inventions in human history. Not only did it provide storage but also reflected the culture of many civilizations. How can this be used in Minecraft? I'll tell you.
For a while now, clay has been a part of the game. First we were able to make bricks, then flowerpots, and then significantly later, hardened clay blocks. I believe there should be more uses for clay, as it seems to be lacking in actually "functional" uses. Clay, as most people know, it the primary component in pottery. The pottery wheel in Minecraft could be used to create different vessels to contain a variety of liquids such as water, milk, and various potions. If one clicked on the pottery wheel, a GUI would appear which would give the player the option to place from 1-4 clay balls onto the wheel. Depending on how many they chose to place, a vessel would be made that would be in similar in height in relation to the amount of clay used. For instance, if the player decided to use one clay ball for a vessel, a form would appear that would be half a block high. For each clay ball used, half a block of height would be added to the vessel. The smallest vessel that could be created would hold the equivalent to 2 buckets. The vessels would be placed down on the ground but could not be picked up and held in the inventory when they are filled with a liquid.
So as each update approaches completion, the new snapshots seem to be more and more bug fixes. The last snapshot that came out had many bug fixes which in theory means that 1.8 is near. Does anyone have any ideas to when we may see 1.8? A few weeks? A month? Put your ideas in the comments below and if you have any information on a release date, please share it!
