posted a message on Can't Find Any Slimes :/

If you have any swamps nearby (or even moderately far away) it may be quicker and easier to hunt slimes on the surface at night.

The closer to a full moon the better, no slimes should spawn in swamps when the moon is new.

You could use spectator mode though you might end up seeing a stronghold or something else you would have wanted to find legitimately.

If you provide a world download or just the seed and coordinates I'd be glad to take a look.

I was worried about the number of duplicate maps I was finding and knowing about the problem with cartographers and their maps I started breaking the chests as I found them but that didn't help, I was still getting new maps for looted chests and when I was picking up a bunch of maps without going out to find the treasure some of them were duplicates and some weren't.

It would be nice to know for certain how the system works, I definitely got the idea that maps from the same field of underwater ruins tended to show the same chest.

(Not only that but I have a suspicion that the chests had a tendency to contain the same loot as well.)

I definitely need to start exploring a new ocean if I want any more Hearts of the Sea, though there's an offside chance that 11 conduits are somewhere close to enough.

    (Nah, that's crazy talk!)

(Besides, I've already got 18 Heartless nautilus shells.)

    1) I believe it's spot on, though pretty hard to judge sometimes.

    2) I've always thought of that an oval with a little circle on the end. :P

Anyway I'd say the center of the oval rectangle but I saw a post in the forum saying that the way to find the treasure is to have the bottom, non square/circle, end just visible between the "legs" of the X and that has worked pretty well for me though sometimes better than others. But always very close.

    3) That really really shouldn't be the case, could you have upgraded your world between finding the map and looking for the treasure?

There have been posts suggesting that structures don't always match when that happens.

    4) I've had chests pretty far down, mostly if they are on steep slopes, but they've always been covered by sand, never under dirt or stone.

Within 16 blocks from the center?

It should be 16 blocks side to side.

The spawning area is 16X16 blocks. (X6)

18X18 is better though because then golems can spawn in the outer blocks without the walls stopping them.

    Shame about the spawn rates.

    Maybe that's what you meant?

Since you also say 9 in each direction.

If 2 and 7 are where the golems feet and legs are and 3 is Top of doors and floor for upper golems then that sounds like the canonical design so both floors should spawn golems without any glitches.

posted a message on Iron Farm - villager/golem mechanics question

It IS actually possible to put the spawning floors closer together if one uses semitransparent blocks like upper slabs or redstone blocks.

There are two designs on the iron farm tutorial page that actually use 6 layers of platforms, stacked right on top of each other with no space inbetween, the Iron Head and the Iron Processing Unit.

    https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Iron_golem_farming

The Head counts on the golems suffocating inside a solid block of redstone and requires 45 stacks of redstone blocks. (Hmm, I might actually have that many, I REALLY like mining!)

The IPU uses several stacks of "platforms" that are only 2 blocks wide and uses water streams to push the golems out of the stacks and it can use upper slabs instead of redstone blocks.

They are both claimed to be super efficient, the Head because it allows spawning on every block within the spawn zone, the IPU has fewer spawning blocks, though still more than usual, but flushes the golems out really fast.

If you do go ahead with your stacked mega farm I'd be interesting in reading about your progress should you feel like posting about it.

Hex - 100% certain on the upper level - its the one I can see when afk from my platform about 80 blocks above it for a hostile mob farm. Not so certain, now you mention it, for the lower platform as I can't readily see that one. But quite often I'll get a second golem spawn within a minute of the first one. Sometimes, of course, its 10 minutes without (roughly) but double spawns in quick succession do happen.

Are you sure the required 4 block height for golem spawning is included in the 6 blocks? It would seem from my experience that it isn't. I'd expect its just the lowest block that counts. I do know these measurements are from the bottom of the door.

On a side note I'm now wondering if you could do a vertical mega golem far where you slowly shrink the villages height-wise as opposed to horizontally. No- I don't know why I am suddenly fixated with a skyscraper iron farm either. Just got a feeling there might be a way.

If I'm understanding you correctly you're right about the 4 vs 6 blocks, as long as the feet of the golems are inside the spawn zone it doesn't matter if their heads and bodies don't fit. Also the blocks that make up the lower platform in the standard design are outside the spawn zone.

It's odd that your upper platform is spawning golems, it shouldn't but a while back there were several threads about golems spawning outside iron farms so maybe that glitch is still in effect.

I would still suggest "fixing" your iron farm in case they fix the glitch or the glitch is sporadic and you'd get more golems with a farm that followed the rules.

On the other hand it could be interesting to build another farm according to the standard specs and see if there is any difference in output.

Or even to modify BigAlanM's design to push the golems off in different directions on the two platforms and compare the number of spawns on them.

If they spawn far enough outside the spawn zone maybe you could squeeze in three spawning platforms.

Your mega farm idea sounds like it could work.

I don't think there would be any benefit, output wise, to having the spawning platforms spread out at different heights instead of combining them but I expect it would look neat.

Did you set the Chunkbase apps to the correct edition?

They seem to default to Java, though maybe that's only if you use a PC/Mac to access them.

    --

Also the distance at which mob istantly despawn is 128 blocks, so "like +100 blocks" might not be enough.

And it was unclear what you lit up, slimes at the surface of a swamp spawn in the dark, it's only underground in slime chunks that it's ok to light up the chunk.

"So I built a simple iron farm. 2 wide hole in the middle leading to a lava trap. 2 Platforms 6 blocks apart height-wise with doors going around the holes with their base exactly in the middle so 3 blocks from each spawning platform. Works fine."

    Are you sure?

I'd be willing to bet you aren't getting any golems on the upper platform.

The golem spawning area is only 6 blocks high and the golems need a 4 block high space to spawn in so the only way to fit in two working spawn platforms is to build the upper platform so it blocks the upper half of the doors and the lower platform is 4 blocks below it.

posted a message on Iron Farm - villager/golem mechanics question

    No, that won't work.

The iron golem spawning area is centered around the center of the village, both vertically and horizontally.

Adding more doors at a higher level will move the village center up and golems will stop spawning on the bottom of your existing platforms.

(And you may need to move the upper platform to fit in a new one at the proper level above.)

To expand you need to add more villages, which means building a new iron farm at least 66 blocks away from the first.

You can build them in layers, with the holes above each other so the golems fall from the upper layers down through the lower layers, but the layers have to be 66 blocks apart.

You can check your settings by selecting the world and clicking on the "Re-Create" button on the World Select screen.

Though since the original world had an End City it would seem to have to be something in the server settings.

    Quote from DapperDinosaur»

I do not need beds, and the only time I use them is when I'm first setting my spawn somewhere or someone else wants to. If I want to keep phantoms able to spawn on me (which I do, they're the game's coolest mob now), I'll just leave the server or pop into the nether while everyone else sleeps or does the same thing. It's really not that hard of a solution.

You shouldn't have to do anything because somebody else wants to avoid phantoms or reset their spawn, all they have to do is briefly lie in a bed, it doesn't require the cooperation of anybody else, the only bed related reason for them to bother anybody else is if they want the night skipped.

(Or if they lack the wool to make one.)

And, yes, the phantoms are cool, specially when diving in for the attack.
