OT: Hansekins, I had a look around your city you uploaded briefly earlier. There's not much you haven't already posted there to see, but it was certainly fun exploring your city and seeing everything from every angle in detail. :biggrin.gif:

Cool, glad you had a chance to look around! I started stage 5, but it will probably be awhile before I complete it, partially because of how much is involved, but mostly because I've gotten wrapped up in some other (non-minecraft related) projects. I still plan to finish though!

I'm trying to make my townhall, but I honestly am out of ideas on how to make it look. Everything I design either looks like a church or a house.

Can anyone share pictures of theirs so I can get inspiration? Or even link to some pictures of townhalls (Minecraft or RL.)

All the pictures I could find are of massive town halls, and I need a humble one. :S

Don't get hung up on it having to have a specific "look". Town Halls come in all shapes and sizes, and the town hall of a small town *is* likely to look more like a house than a big city hall style with pillars and things. Look at what the requirements for the challenge are, and just go from there. Mine started out fairly humble as well... I've got pictures in this thread if you search for my posts.

Other people have been posting pictures of their progress since the start of this challenge too, I'm sure you can see what others have done just going back through the thread.

This is the best video I have ever watched. Not only is it informative, and genius, but the narrator is hilarious. I loved the way he said cobblestone: Cobb-lay-stone.

Do the creepers drop all the records, or just the green one still?

lol, I know, in fact ever since I watched that video, every time I say 'cobblestone' I can't help but say it like he does. :wink.gif: I *think* it's an italian accent, but I'm not sure.

The creepers drop both records, and in fact, when I was farming them using that trap, the drop rate was higher on the yellow one, when I really wanted the green one. I have wayyy more copies of "13" then I have of "Cat".

I may have a little look around your world tomorrow sometime.
I really like the hot baths you made, simple but nice. You know you're living the high life when you've got a rug in your home and a fancy office. Great update as standard :biggrin.gif:

Thanks for the comments! I look forward to hearing your feedback after an actual visit instead of just screenshots. :wink.gif:

I'm really enjoying this challenge, as it's nice to have goals to work toward, and the limitations make it a bit more interesting and fun.

I was just reviewing the requirements for stage 5, and it seems like it will take me some time... as well as a lot of cobble, since I think I'm going to need to expand my walls. :wink.gif: But I just realized that I will finally be able to use my diamonds! :biggrin.gif: I've accumulated 39 (37? Something like that) of them since the start of the challenge, and they've just been sitting there, taunting me. :wink.gif:

What texture pack are you using in those stage four photos Hansekins?
I like the look of it!

I switched to Sphax PureBDCraft. He's got several different versions at assorted resolutions. I'm currently using the 32x version, since my Minecraft performance hasn't been the greatest since 1.8 came out, so I didn't want to overtax my PC with the higher resolutions. It's been working out great for me.

A few OOC comments before my progress report...

I changed my texture pack midway through stage 4, so I apologize if the change in textures is a bit jarring. It still looks good though, I think. :smile.gif:

Also, I lost track of time at some point, so my date entries are probably not 100% accurate. I estimated based on how long it took me to complete each project though.

    And now, to business. :wink.gif:

    Journal Entry - Stage 1

    Journal Entry - Stage 2

    Journal Entry - Stage 3

    Journal Entry - Stage 4

    Day 1

I was tinkering with that glowing red stone today, and I found that it has magnetic properties! After experimenting with it for some time, I was able to create a rudimentary clock! Now I will be able to mark the passage of time when I am underground.

I also made a compass, which will be incredibly useful when I am out exploring the surrounding areas. I get so wrapped up in examining new things, that I can easily lose my way, and it's reassuring to now have a device that will help me find my way back home.

    --

With all this hard work lately, I realize that I am filthy. The nearby pond is outside of the city walls, and it would be nice if I had somewhere to wash in safety. I have decided to build some hot baths, and I hope to make use of some of that lava that I found down in the caves. I will gather some materials and begin today.

    --

I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself, but I have collected some lava in a metal bucket. Just as the trees here seem to have strange properties, so does the metal. One would expect a metal bucket of lava to be too hot to carry, (in fact, one would expect the lava to melt the bucket itself!) but I was able to carry the buckets with ease... they were cool to the touch.

    Day 2

It is raining today, and I was hoping to complete the bath before the building around it, however, I am reluctant to pour the lava in the rain, for fear it will cool and harden. However, I have the basic structure of the bath completed, so I will start work on its building instead. Working in the rain doesn't bother me!

    ---

Night has fallen and it is still raining. Now that I am protected within the walls, working throughout the night is not a problem, but I have realized that I need more stone. I am going to head into the mine and collect some more, and get out of this rain!

    Day 3

I spent all day today in the caves, and when I emerged, it was dusk. But at least the rain has stopped! I think I have enough stone to complete the bath house. I plan to work throughout the night.

    Day 4

This project is taking more time than I expected. It is also taking more resources than I expected. Back to the mine!

    ---

I started a new branch in the mine, and while I was digging, I broke into what appears to be an old mineshaft! It seems to be deserted and out of use now, and in fact, I was set upon by zombies and skeletons as soon as I broke through the way. Nevertheless, I intend to explore these tunnels. I wonder if the former occupants of the nearby village were miners?

    ---

I found a chest in these tunnels! I opened it carefully, not sure what I might find within, and was surprised by the treasure I had found! The chest contained some coal, some lapis, and a shiny diamond! It also contained what looks like melon seeds. I'm not sure if they will germinate properly, as I have no idea how long they have been in this chest, but I will attempt to plant them and see what happens.

In the meantime, I cannot carry any more, so it is time to return to the surface, and hopefully finish up the bathhouse.

    ---

Something is slowly dismantling my town walls. I noticed some stone missing from the base of the wall, and decided I'd better check the entire perimeter. I found several areas of the wall where stone was missing! Some clever monster out there is attempting to break through my walls! I had better start doing regular patrols around the wall to repair any damage.

It may also be wise to build some defensive towers along the wall itself.

    Day 5

The bathhouse is finally completed! I must say, I am pleased with the end result. It is bright, warm and cheery. And I think I may spend the rest of the day relaxing in the bath.

    ---

I have decided to improve my meager dwelling. It has served me well, but it feels too cramped... my little bedroom is large enough to hold my bed but nothing more. I am going to add a second floor and remodel the first.

There are probably more important things I should be doing, but I think I've worked hard enough and deserve to live in comfort!

    Day 7

It took two days, but my home remodel is complete. The former tiny bedroom is now a small, galley kitchen, while the bed is now in a more comfortable, spacious room upstairs. I have a nice view over the wall to the plains from up there. The living room is also more comfortable now that I've moved all the clutter out of there, and I even managed to weave a colorful rug!

    Day 8

I think I am going to need more food to feed my populace. My tiny wheat farm served its purpose for only me, but a full city will need a much larger food supply! I admit that I was impressed with the layout and efficiency of the farms at the abandoned village. I think I am going to use their farm layouts here.

    Day 10

I have completed the new farms. I had originally planned to plant them outside the town walls, where the current wheat farm is, but it occurred to me that there is sufficient room within the walls to make some plots. I planted the new farms in an area between the tree farm and the bathhouse, and even made room to plant those melon seeds I found down in the mines. Time will tell if anything comes of it.

Even though there are no animals within the walls to trample the crops, I fenced off the farms anyway. You can't be too careful.

    Day 11

I have headed back down into the mine to collect materials for my next projects. While exploring the mineshafts, I came upon a corridor filled with cobwebs. As I was clearing them away with my sword, I was set upon by dozens of small spiders! I flailed at them wildly, and managed to escape with my life.. they inflicted me with a painful poison that fortunately dissapated quickly, but left me exhausted. As I sat to east some food to recover my strength, another spider appeared before me! After dispatching that spider, I noticed a strange device... it looked like a small cage, and these creatures were appearing right near it, out of thin air! I placed a few torches to get a better look, and noticed immediately that the creatures stopped appearing. I don't know what sort of device this is, but apparently light disables it. This knowledge will come in handy should I encounter any more of them.

    ---

I have found more of these monster spawning cages in the mineshafts, though these were in their own rooms, with floors of moss colored rock. One of them was causing zombies to appear, and the other was creating normal spiders. These rooms also contained treasure chests, which held assorted essentials like coal, iron and bread. However, one of the chests contained three saddles! This has given me the idea to build a stable, so that weary visitors to the town have a place to let their horses rest. Though now that I think of it, I haven't seen any horses in this part of the world... but surely they exist?

    ---

I was returning to the front of the mine to head up to the surface and I heard an odd "sucking" noise. It was coming from an area I had previously explored, and was lit up well, so I went to investigate. Upon turning a corner, I saw a small, green, gelatinous looking cube. It was jumping up and down, and as soon as it saw me, it started leaping toward me. In a panic, I punched it away, and it landed in the nearby lava. What a strange creature!

    ---

After dropping off some of my treasures in the chests at the bottom of the stairs, I headed back into the mine, and again heard the strange sucking noise... only this time, it sounded like more than one. I returned to the place where I saw the first one, and sure enough I saw several of these creatures! Again, they started leaping toward me, and I punched them away from me. The larger ones split into smaller ones, and now there were about a dozen of them! I punched them each away as they leaped at me, and they dissolved into a a small ball of slimy substance. I picked it up and it felt somewhat sticky. I don't know what this substance is, but maybe I can find a use for it. I will keep an eye out for more of these creatures!

    ---

I have spent far too much time exploring these mineshafts, and not enough time gathering materials! I will never get my projects done at this rate. I need to focus and collect the stone I require.

    Day 13

I have added two watchtowers to the town walls, near the main gate. The towers are equipped with ballistas, so that I can defend the town against any attack those monsters may plan.

While working late into the night, I believe I saw the creatures that are dismantling my walls. They are horrifying to behold; tall, gangly things, black as night with glowing eyes. I felt compelled to avert my eyes, because looking directly at them chilled me to the bone. I witnessed one of them take a stone directly out of my wall, and wander aimlessly with it.

I built up the courage to look directly at one, and as I did so, it froze. In a panic, I looked slightly away and saw it sprinting toward me! I was relieved that I was safe within the town walls, as I saw it pressed up against the iron bars within the walls, however, as I turned my back and walked away, the creature was suddenly upon me! I managed to dispatch it, but it is terrifying to know that they can evidently teleport right through my defenses!

    Day 20

Many days have passed, and I have been hard at work on my many projects. I have not even taken much of a break to write in my journal! However, I have accomplished much.

I have completed the stable, which lies just outside the town walls. I wish for visitors to have a clean, dry place to leave their horses, however, I do not want them tromping about the town, so putting the stable outside made the most sense. However, the stable is secure, and there is even an entrance through the city walls from inside the stable.

I also decided that I wanted a place where my residents and visitors could expand their minds, and decided to build a library. Right now it is filled with books of my own creation, however, I hope that as more people visit the library, additional books will be donated.

Finally, I installed a small incinerator in a corner along the town walls. It seemed to make sense to provide a place for the citizen to dispose of their trash and unwanted items.

    Day 22

It occurred to me that many people hold varied religious beliefs, and I wished to make a place where they would practice those beliefs. I do not wish to offend anyone, however, so I decided to build a shrine where people of all religions could go to pray, meditate or do whatever their religion requires. It is quiet, serene, and beautiful, and I am quite happy with the final product.

    Day 23

My town is growing ever bigger, even into a city, I daresay. I have decided that if I am going to serve as Magistrate of this city, I need an office in the city hall. I am going to add a second floor to the current town hall, and give myself an office there!

    Day 26

It took several days, but the expansion to the town hall, or should I say CITY hall, is complete! It was a lot of work to dismantle the roof in order to put on a second floor, but I am pleased with the result. In order to add the additional floor, I regrettably had to remove the chandelier from the foyer, however, I installed it in my new office, which is comfortable, with windows that overlook the town square from my desk.

    Day 27

I think my city is beautiful, and I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to live here. My citizens will be grateful that I have provided them with such luxuries! I am sure they will lavish me with gifts and praise!

In also decided that I would upload my save in case anyone wants to download it and look around. I am wishing I had done this at the end of each stage, but oh well... too late now. Keep in mind that I am doing this challenge using Beta 1.8.1, so I take no responsibility for what loading it into a 1.9 pre-release version may do to it.

Should you decide to try it out, you should spawn in a swamp that borders a forest and a desert. Head northwest (where west is where the sun sets) and you should see the town walls nearly straight away. The town center is at x:66, z:488.

I'd be interested to hear any comments from anyone who has checked it out!

Sure you can. I take my birds eye screenshots in survival by building a tower of dirt of stand on. Sure, you can't fly around and easily take multiple shots, but I don't really need multiple angles for the purposes of posting in this thread. :smile.gif:

I've built a couple recently, one in the nether and one in the overworld connecting two nearby villages. Gold is definitely abundant enough to make sufficient powered rails, and I managed to make two somewhat lengthy rail systems and only had to craft about a half stack of normal rail, as I had acquired sooo much rail from exploring abandoned mineshafts.

I built a 50x50x2 mob trap fairly recently (since 1.8) using the lava blade, and it worked fine. If some items were getting destroyed by lava, it wasn't enough to make a noticeable difference, because I was still rolling in drops.

It sounds like the lava blade may not be set correctly though, so that the items *are* getting burnt. Like Volvgang said, some pictures would be helpful for troubleshooting.

I should clarify that I'm not actually "terrified". :wink.gif: I meant it as a tongue in cheek reference to the fact that SMP Minecraft is pretty broken. I love having to fight for my life (I've never played on peaceful, ever), it's just that apparently when certain mobs work they way they are supposed to, they are at least a little more challenging.

Of course, the shortest list is the one that looks like this:

posted a message on Single player Minecraft is terrifying
I nearly always play SMP Minecraft. My husband runs a Minecraft server that the two of us use, and a couple of our friends occasionally join in.. but honestly, it's more me than anyone else. I prefer MP because I don't get as much enjoyment out of building stuff if I can't have other people come along and look at it.

But recently, I decided to try a few of the challenges out there, and have been doing them on SP worlds. I never realized how much stuff is "broken" on MP. (I'm on 1.8.1, btw)

First, cave spiders. I keep seeing posts from people saying how much cave spiders suck and they always get swarmed and die etc and I think "Really? They die easy...." I had no idea that cave spiders give you a poison DoT that can kill you easy if you're not on full health... because the poison is broken in MP.

Also, Endermen are not particularly scary in MP either, because they currently (again, 1.8.1) don't actually come rushing at you when you look at them. They don't do anything. They're just as passive as zombie pigmen. However, I just looked at one in my SP game. He tried to get at me, and I thought I was safe in my castle walls, as I looked at him pressing up against the iron bars I have in the walls. I started to walk away and he teleported through the walls to me! Now, Endermen are not hard to kill, but it was still exhilarating.

So yeah, playing SP is a lot more "difficult" than MP, evidently. Are these things fixed in 1.9? (not that I'm looking forward to dealing with cave spiders as they were intended to be) :wink.gif:
