    It's worth noting that you don't have to type the whole thing out either.
    If you get to " /give @p m " and press tab it'll automatically fill in " /give @p minecraft: " then if you type com and press tab a couple more times it'll give you " /give @p minecraft:command_block "

    Honestly, I don't even see why they need to keep updating the game any more. It's pretty much complete.

    Even if I were to agree that Minecraft is "pretty much complete":
    Generally, More stuff > Less stuff. In a sandbox game this is especially true.

    And as a customer who recieves these updates, for free, I don't feel any need to oppose progress that isn't intrinsically harmful.

    The correct method is /blockdata x y z {Lock:"key"} as aary33 stated.
    Are you sure you're using the right coordinates? You said you put the chest to the left of the Command Block, but left is a meaningless concept here. What matters is the relative position on the X and Y axes.
    Try:
    ~ ~ ~1
    ~1 ~ ~
    ~-1 ~ ~
    Or press F3 to find the coordinates and use the relative positions.

    Aaaah of course. Case sensitivity, the bane of my existence.
    At the moment case is important, so while /summon Zombie will summon a zombie, /summon zombie just fails.
    I think they're going to change it though.
    For now I've fixed the M and now it works fine.

    I'm guessing there must be some required tag for arrows that they won't work properly without. Currently I'm using /summon Arrow ~ ~+2 ~ {motion:[1.0,1.0,1.0]} but it doesn't work.
    I did use pickup at some point, that works fine.

    Definitely agree with many of these, especially the gamerules.
    I would also suggest 2 additional gamerules:
    /gamerule timelock
    /gamerule weatherlock
    If set to true, then the time/weather will not change by itself. This would be useful for custom maps that require a certain time of day, or for people who hate rain.
    False is the default, of course.

    I also made a suggestion topic relating to commands and command blocks whic I think is relevant.

    Commands definitely have untapped potential, that's for sure.

    The zombie wouldn't be in any way challenging because he can't move. Mobs can't control the mobs they ride, so the horse will just idle and wander the way horses do while the zombie sits on top uselessly. To make it a boss you'd have to change the horse AI, or make mobs able to control horses. And at that point this:
    "I think this would be a good addition to Minecraft because Mojang would only have to program in the spawning data"
    becomes invalid.

    Not an awful idea though.
