    Visions of Minecraft

    Darkness.

That’s all I know. I was somewhere but now I’m just surrounded by darkness. It’s neither cold nor hot, just a complete absence of anything and everything. I don’t like it here.

Soon I hear something from somewhere. It sounds so far away and indistinct. I will myself toward the sound, but with nothing around me for reference I have no idea if I’m gaining on the sound. A frantic feeling overcomes me; I must leave this nothingness and get somewhere, anywhere. I must get to that sound!

Suddenly I am somewhere, most definitely somewhere as I feel sand on my body. Its familiar grit a welcome sensation of feeling on my face and arms, the gentle lapping of waves upon the shore calls to me from just over my shoulder. I open my eyes to look around and pause at the stunning view before me. Was the world always this square?

The feeling of curves and random shapes echoes through my mind as I take in the wonderful world around me. A lush green forest full of square trees grows away from the beach and up the side a small rise. As I turn I see the beach going off into the distance in both directions and a large sea fills my view behind me. A very square sun is slowly lifting itself over the horizon lighting my way. The whole scene has a surreal quality about it that feels comforting yet completely wrong at the same time. Like a familiar song played on a kazoo.

I walk slowly up into the tree line, looking for signs of life. Strangely no birds or insects accost me as I enter the forest. No small animals skitter away as I walk along, nor do I trip on any undergrowth or dead leaves. It is like the trees merely spring into existence leaving no trace of their previous neighbors.

Suddenly I hear the sound of movement. The irregular sound of breathing and movement confirms it must be alive whatever it is. I cautiously climb the small rise that blocks my view, as I clear the ridgeline I come face to face with a face that startles me so much I fall back with fear and surprise. Looking up from my prone position I laugh and look around to make sure no one saw how badly that stupid looking pig surprised me. Then again part of me tells me that pigs shouldn’t be as square looking as this one. Brushing myself off I stand up and climb full up onto the rise to get a better look at my surroundings.

Once there I realize the world I find myself in is far larger than I could have dreamed. Square cliffs and mountains pop up for as far as the eye can see, with square trees and rivers dotting the landscape in between. The occasional pig, and what is probably a cow of some kind can be seen moving randomly around this strange new land. I realize I won’t go hungry at least, as soon as I figure out how to kill my meat filled friends.

With a slight grumbling stomach I look down at my pink companion and try to figure out the best way to get to his lovely meaty bits. I look over at a nearby tree and figure a branch would probably work. I reach out to grab a branch only to discover the tree doesn’t have any branches. Furthermore my hand doesn’t have any fingers! I distinctly remember having fingers before arriving here, not this strange square limb sticking out of my body.

I take a deep breath and take a look at myself as best I can. My entire body feels square, block-like even just like the world around me. Strange that my self-image doesn’t match what my senses are telling me my body is really like. Though it tends to make sense that my body would be affected by a world as square as this in as square a way.

I decide to try and use these blocky arms and hands of mine and once again try and relieve my piggy friend of his sweet tasting innards. I walk back to the tree and try to grab some of the leaves, perhaps the branches are inside the square leaves? As I reach for them my “fist” for lack of a better term, leaped out and punched the leaves, destroying them almost instantly. For a moment I’m taken aback as my arms have never moved that fast, but then I look at the tree again and try grabbing a branch again. Again my “fist” whips out and again more leaves go flying only to disappear almost instantly.

Perhaps the branches aren’t in the leaves at all? Perhaps they’re in the trunk? Turning to the trunk I grab for it again and once again my “fist” leaps out and begins beating on the tree trunk. Amazingly (though why should I be amazed any more after all that has already happened?) I feel no pain! The tree begins to shatter and break as I continue to punch it. Soon a square brick of wood is mine! I am now carrying the brick of wood. With new found enthusiasm I begin punching everything I see! Dirt, sand, trees, flowers, all of these things provide me with lovely blocks to carry around. Though I’m not sure where they go when I’m not carrying them.

As I turn back to my pink friend ready to punch him in his ever staring face the light suddenly begins to fade around me. I quickly look around to discover the square sun is already approaching the horizon. How can this be? It hasn’t been even one hour, let alone twenty four of them! How can the sun be setting already?

With a glare I look at piggy, vowing I’d punch him later as I look around for a place to sleep. Something deep inside me tells me that bad things come out at night and that I should find someplace safe. I quickly find a nice cave that doesn’t look lived in. I take my blocks and begin stacking them in the entrance to prevent anything from coming in. Luckily the blocks seem to stick together without any form of glue or nails. This speeds up my construction efforts greatly, which is a good thing as the sun is almost down.

As the last rays of the sun fade away I finish my wall and sigh with relief and lean heavily against my handy work. Unfortunately I haven’t figured out how to bring light to this dark place but when the sun returns I shouldn’t have any problems. This reminds me, I should really leave an opening in my wall to see when the sun returns. Turning back to my wall I hear a strange hiss, I can’t see anything, nor do I feel anything but the cool secure feeling of the wall in front of me. With a shrug I pull out a block midway through the wall.

    BOOM!

    Darkness

That’s all I know. I was somewhere but now I’m just surrounded by darkness. It’s neither cold nor hot, just a complete absence of anything and everything. I don’t like it here.

LOL I could see a pick-axe one just going in a strait line into a lava pool.

Seriously could be interesting to use one to dig your branch mines with. Start it up and let it go. :smile.gif:

Hmm... I like the "Lava Fan" as you call it, though it looks wierd. Not for my "realisitic" server I guess, but as I'm not experienced with Lava can you just make it fall off the sides of your wall too? I.e. if you didn't have the signs wouldn't it just run down the sides? (I'm not sure)

It's not notches job to get rid of griefers, it's the job of server admins.

Seriously ? Whats wrong with you people ? Life is way too short to waste it by not having better tools to do your job.

Probably all of you will agree that server admins need better tools to prevent griefing.
White lists may help you but its kind of sad that there is no alternative.

So lets think about some ways to either avoid, prevent or mitigrate damage by griefers...
It doesn't really matter if those get implemented by notch himself or some modders.

    - Chunk 'ownership', snapshots or version control
[*:1vbh6cit] Let someone or multiple someones aquire ownership of a smallish area on a server
(first come first served with the ability to share acess with other people and nice admin tools to apply additional policies)
[*:1vbh6cit] If the 'owners' built something they can save a snapshot of the current state. ( server will keep a certain number of snapshots and maybe take them itself depending on some kind of policy)
[*:1vbh6cit] Once something bad happens its possible to revert back to a previous snapshot
[*:1vbh6cit] Some kind of logging should happen to prevent abuse. If feasable tracking or deletion of resources that would be cloned.
[*:1vbh6cit] Admins should be able to review what happened before an area gets restored
[*:1vbh6cit] The server should keep evidence of unusual and grieving related behaviour (atleast for less trusted players) that happen to be in areas owned by someone else.
[*:1vbh6cit] Owners should be able to 'record' a grief attack in progress
[*:1vbh6cit] Players should be identified per account
[*:1vbh6cit] Transparent, fair and hard to abuse rules concerning evidence of grief attacks should be agreed upon by large parts of the comunity
[*:1vbh6cit] If enough reliable evidence exists it should be possible to share the identities of those griefers (policies of a server concerning known griefers is left to the admin)

    - Additional solutions to prevent theft if desired... ( afaik those already exist as mods)

I kind of like the Snapshot idea over the "Block Ownership ID" idea. Mainly because you're not really adjusting the properties of anything in the chunk, just making it so you can restore just that chunk from some crazy crap. It also avoids the possible grief sidestep of preventing individual blocks from being affected by other players by having them start wildfires or what not to do the damage indirectly. *Shrugs*

You know I don't think Notch should do anything DIRECTLY against griefers. As folks say part of survival is surviving the other survivors. (The Walking Dead is a great example of how the other survivors are often more dangerous then the monsters. :smile.gif: )

I'm fine with Whitelist, blacklist, and other server admin mods and plugins. All good things that let the PLAYERS choose how they want to play.

To me what Notch could do is do things that let the players do stuff. Locks, Locking Chests, Vaults, Spear Traps, trip wires, things the players use how they want are all I want from notch. :smile.gif:

Not quite sure I understand, but the only way that a water source block will cease to exist is if another block is placed in the exact same spot (or if lava flows onto the source block from above). As long as the water source block is above the lava, then water will flow from the source block onto the lava (or towards the closest hole in the floor), cooling it and turning it into obsidian, at which point you can pick up the water source block again.

Really?! Sweet! See you understood fine and answered my questiong. Thanks! You really are a smart man. :smile.gif:

I agree with OP. I'm building a Highway on my server and I've been building it all out of Half-blocks. That's a lot of lost Cobble!

(Then again I only recently heard of the idea of a cobble generator so there's that... :tongue.gif:)

the method behind my mining technique is fairly standard. first and foremost... YOU NEED A BUCKET OF WATER! this will allow you to turn your instant death into an obsidian "highway", like the picture below. just drop the water in the block next to the lava. once it spreads out, pick the water source block back up and repeat the process. just dig down to layer 12 and start branch mining until you hit lava(ive never seen lava spawn AT layer 12, it will always be at 11. its probably possible but ive never seen it). it will give you something like this.

Okay I'm a newb to MC so I have to ask a dumb question about this..

When you say put the block of water next to the lava is it like this? (You've removed the screen shots so not sure)

    :Water: []
    :cobblestone: :Lava:

So the water "flows" on the lava? Doesn't the water go away afterwards so you can't grab it anymore? Again I apologise for the stupid question but I don't have much experience with Water/lava interactions besides running away. :smile.gif:

So I've been building a nice highway system on my server with these cool burning wood columns every so often:

So yeah how I light those pillars is I put dirt around 4 sides of the block, hop up on a block next to those and light the wood in the middle. After 10 seconds or so destroy the dirt and tada done right?

Well at first I was killing myself by burning my face off by mistiming my jump to see the wood and light it. I fixed that by building up the little step of dirt. Next I was building the highway through the forest (you know where there is going) and without even thinking about it jumped up to my lighting set-up. Light the left column on fire no worries. Then the light the right one and FOOM! All of the sudden I have five trees on fire and burning toward another player's house! O.O!

I spent five minutes fighting that forest fire. :smile.gif:

Good to see I'm not the only one with troubles connecting, then again I can't get into Minecraft.net either so maybe that's the cause?
