Another thing, always jump. When you are falling and hit a player, you deal a critical. This can be useful if you need to even the odds in a fight. You also probably know that sprint jumping is faster, which can be useful to get away from an opponent with better gear. Be careful though, it uses food up fast. If you find yourself frequently outmatched, brew speed potions with sugar to get away and save your hard earned gear. If they have a good sword use weakness potions.
If I were you I would brew Strength Potions. Though they can be hard to get, they are worth it. A strength II potion adds six damage, so a regular diamond sword becomes a Sharpness VI sword, and a Sharpness V becomes a Sharpness Xl
