I was very disappointed before this morning. The source code announcement changed my mind entirely.

Pretty interesting fluid mod. Oceans are still infinite though, but it seems to be an improvement of the old water in Minecraft.

Will kill the community and the game.

Notch, has obviously seen a way to milk the game further, I think this SUCKS big time.

In the Alpha, Notch said that he in the future would release the game as opensource, I guess it's never gonna happen.

Kneejerk reaction. This is not going to split the community very much (if security is maintained) and will greatly improve the quality of mods released. Charging money and issuing purchase-specific certificates creates an environment in which developers are less likely to release malicious code and helps maintain a "certified" niche of mods. Something similar is done with devkits in the console gaming community.

Again, the ONLY way that this would harm the community is if people start to lose trust in coders who do not release code using the source code.

Legal issues as well as new security problems that will arise once people gain access to the games source are going to be extremely difficult to deal with. Furthermore, current modders may be harmed from mistrust due to a rise in malicious content created using information available in the source.

Mojang is going to have to be careful, but this seems like it could resolve a lot of problems with the current modding scene and also help the game gain benefits that are usually reserved for Open Source games.

Notch updated his twitter about an hour ago. He says he's "kind of" adding a modding API.

Looks good. I can't imagine a 2Fort conversion getting much more accurate than that structurally (sink room/sewers screenshots seem to be missing though).

This is exactly where I was hoping Notch would be going when he made the announcement that he was going to work harder to support mods. The Source Engines potential for modification is what has made the games that use it so great. Mods like DarkRP, ZM, Surf, HLPuzzle have proven that the mod community is not only extremely creative, but also that modability increases the longevity of multiplayer games in general.

I hope your project takes off and Notch finally prioritizes a unified modification system. Hopefully Minecraft will go above and beyond what has already been established in previous PC titles so far (I truly believe that it has the ability to do so).

Good luck and I can't wait to try out your mod when it's ready.

Any updates on this? I was hoping that OP would finish it. If you don't want to finish could you please release what you have? I think this is really great looking and it's probably the only custom pack that I would use outside of Frendens.

Also, the diamonds in the latest shot look great as well as the coal; they fit the sharp/angular style of the other textures very well.

It looks like a nuclear bomb went off at spawn and all of the griefers hang around there, but if you can get away it's pretty fun. Someone was teleporting random players around and then dropping TNT on them; finally quit after losing my inventory.

posted a message on How do YOU mine?
I go straight down to 15 blocks above the bedrock and then make a hub which branches out into separate long NSWE "combs." Strip mining is for people that are building super structures; if you're doing it to find minerals/valuables then you should probably try something else.

This technique also allows a good mix of spelunking too (and you're always where you want to be when you hit a cave; right next to the area where you usually find all of the good stuff). Getting lost or stranded also rarely happens.

    SquareWave?

    Carbonfiber?

I'm sure someone will give a good name suggestion if they haven't already.

Your graphics card really doesn't matter for playing minecraft.

Yeah, the poll is pretty pointless; Minecraft is largely CPU dependent.

    My rig:
    Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 3.6GHz
    4GB DDR2 1066 (5-5-5-15)
    9800GTX+

I went from 50-60 FPS @ 2.1 GHz during the alpha, to 20-30FPS @ 3.6GHz in the beta. My performance went down even though my CPU is significantly faster than it was when I had it underclocked.

posted a message on Minecraft; its a BETA game
    157 words and two periods...

Seriously though, it is a Beta and people need to make issues that they have with the game apparent so that the developers fix them. Don't blame people for complaining, there are issues that need to be corrected and they're more likely to be corrected if more people bring them to light.
