Just released an update to support both Java 7 and 8! (Check the OP.) Also included much better installation instructions in the download. Still working on updating the mod for Technic, however, so stay tuned for that... (UPDATE: Technic build is up! Woohoo!)

It was a surprisingly large amount of work, but things should hopefully remain playable for a good while to come. I recommend everyone keep a copy of Java 8 on their machine for the foreseeable future, not just for Hack/Mine, but for any old mods you may want to revisit some day.

    Enjoy!

All of the re-uploads on the Technic launcher seem get shot down in a month

It's not me doing that, presumably the Technic mods are enforcing it. If they're getting taken down, then presumably it's because they're inappropriately using the name or something. But I would heartily recommend to anyone attempting to recreate the mod to just do it their own way, rather than trying to emulate the mod exactly or borrow the name.

the official release no longer runs

The official release works for Java 7, not 8, whereas the beta currently on the Discord will work for Java 8, not 7. The beta is also a bit more stable. As soon as I get some time, I want to fix it so HSM will work with *every* version of Java, though. Again, sorry it's taking so long, I really want to work on this soon. (UPDATE: I'm now working on this! I have Java 7 and 8 working I believe, still working on 9. Stay tuned...)

    Hey everyone,

I hesitated to mention this, because I felt like I already spammed this thread with my life problems, but basically... my dad passed away in June last year, and things have been fairly hectic ever since. I'm alright now, as it's been a while... so yeah. (You can read his obituary, if you like.) Obviously, it's kind of a lot after going through cancer at only 24, which is why I hesitated so long to mention it... just feels like I'm spamming excuses at this point. But that's where I've been at, apart from making time for family, working on Nebulous Rax like a mad man, and doing occasional contract work to pay the bills. That's life, I suppose.

    Quick synopsis of things:

    • You can find the latest updates for my projects on the Discord server. I'm actually almost always online there, and it's the best way for you to get in touch with me. You can find a somewhat more stable beta version of HSM, working for Java 8 (but not Java 7) on the Discord, if you're interested.
    • Nothing new on the cancer front. As far as I'm aware, I'm basically in the clear at this point. Whew.
    • Priorities are still on NR, as that is currently my full time job. (Sorry if I hadn't made that clear.) It has to be my priority because it's what I'm hoping to earn an income by, whereas HSM is a totally pro-bono project. It's also taking much longer than I anticipated, meaning my time is very limited atm.
    • My current goal for Hack/Mine is to have it working for the latest Java version, which will be the next update I make once I have time. (I'm also going to look into ways of ensuring that future Java updates won't break it, but we shall see.) It'll still be targeting Minecraft v1.2.3, for previously stated reasons. I realize it's taking me a ridiculous amount of time to get around to it, apologies for that.
    • Open Sourcing Hack/Mine is still on the table, but I just don't have time right now - it's not a simple matter of uploading the code as-is, the entire codebase would actually have to be refactored into "bytecode changes" in order for it to be legal, which is not at all a trivial task, certainly much more work than I initially anticipated. I'm currently pretty conflicted about it, tbqh.

Since I get this question a lot: for a while I thought about trying to start a Patreon for HSM or something, but it just didn't make sense, either as a long-term career option or in the short-term (recalling that I've only made about $700 in donations from HSM, despite its popularity.) As far as other ways of "monetizing" HSM would go, nothing really made a lot of sense to me or seemed right, so it's just been in limbo. The only real option to me appeared to be starting a new project I could actually charge for and hoping to garner support for it from the audience of HSM; hence, Nebulous Rax. But these things are inherently uncertain, so at the end it's just what seemed right to me while also being something I felt excited to do.

Finally, an NR update: terrain destruction with physics-y debris is now in, along with basic DBZ-esque game controls - I want to make a video soon, whenever I feel that it's presentable. Maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist :/

Thanks for sticking around - once things are more certain with NR, I should have some time freed up for HSM. Be sure to stop by the Discord if you're still interested in the mod! Otherwise, hopefully I'll never have to post anything else about cancer or life issues again :)

Alright... I present to you an ultra-pre-alpha demo of the NebRax Engine! Download it here.

If y'all wanna help me test by running it on your machines, I'd greatly appreciate it! You'll need 64-bit Windows, 64-bit Java 8, and a decent CPU and GPU. It's only a 10 MB download or so.

Currently, gameplay is limited to flying around ultra-fast and adding/removing terrain. Kinda curious what y'all make of the movement, what your thoughts and ideas are, etc. I have no idea how it's going to fare on everyone's systems, and that's probably the main reason I want y'all to test it - I got some issues on AMD earlier, but hopefully those are hammered out.

Also, I just created a Discord: https://discord.gg/xCFccr8 I'll try and be there 24/7 in the near future, if y'all wanna discuss or need installation help, etc.

    Mother of all GIFs: http://imgur.com/gallery/yIpSI

    Screengrabs:

Some textures, courtesy of Misa's Texture Pack:

A nice, wide shot of procedural terrain with edits:

    A cratery landscape...

    Controls:

    • Open up the main menu with ESC and check out "Key Bindings" for the (almost) comprehensive controls.
    • WASD to move around, SHIFT to sprint, SPACE to jump.
    • Double-tap SPACE to toggle Free Fly Mode.
    • Left-Click to place terrain, Right-Click to remove terrain.
    • Mouse-Wheel to zoom the camera and resize the placement cursor, L_CTRL + Mouse-Wheel to swap materials.
    • L to pick up and place the world's directional light.
    • F to fire little physics objects!

    Issues I'm currently aware of:

    • Terrain is sometimes missing: for now, just open up the menu with ESC and mash the "Fix Missing Terrain" button.
    • Sometimes you can fall through the terrain. Just double-tap space to go into "free-fly mode."
    • Non-100% DPI is jacked for fullscreen mode (similar issues exist for Minecraft, actually.)
    • Clouds disappear as you get closer to them, then pop back in once you're inside them.
    • Removing terrain underneath "sleeping" physics objects does not "wake" them, and they just float there until disturbed.
    • Grass looks pretty static - would look better if it swayed in the wind.

    Short-term planned features:

    • Fixes for any known issues.
    • Improved performance, better performance scaling.
    • Improved cross-platform support.
    • Simple undo/redo system for terrain placement.
    • More terrain placement shapes (basically, more world creation tools.)
    • Better atmosphere rendering, sun/moon/stars, etc.

I'll slap it on the OP with it once I know it's relatively stable on people's machines. Fingers crossed...

EDIT: thanks to Master801 for helping me hammer through some issues, got it working on his machine (Windows 10, older CPU) at approx 30 FPS. Whew!

Hey everyone, just a courtesy update: I'm still alive and stuff! If you wanna keep up with me, the best way right now is on Twitter at my dev account www.twitter.com/frizzildev, and/or my personal account www.twitter.com/philipforilip. I'm also planning on letting y'all playtest a demo of the NebRax engine I've been working on soon! I've made a lot of progress on it, to say the least.

Just fyi, I finished chemo in February of last year, and it seems I'm totally cancer free atm. No lingering side-effects as far anyone can tell :) I'll get another scan in May, and hopefully that comes up clean as well. On a less positive note, I'm actually dealing with some family illness atm (my dad's been in ICU for two weeks now after having heart/kidney issues), but as soon as this passes, things should be going really well again. Sorry to continually drop life issues on y'all :/ I'll be able to lay out more definite plans for various projects once all this passes.

I definitely dropped the ball on Hack/Mine stuff - at least, to the extent it's not related to the engine I'm currently developing. I think I forgot to update this thread when it became obvious I couldn't dedicate a lot of time to anything during chemo. Since then, I've basically been anxious to return (which was pretty stupid in retrospect.) I really appreciate all of the kind messages from you guys, it really meant a lot to me during the worst of things.

The forums actually seem less malware-y/buggy than the last time I checked, so maybe it'll be worth hanging around here again. Sorry for the confusion. I'll update the OP in a bit.

EDIT: well I'm trying to update the OP, but the editor seems to not be loading anything... so maybe things aren't much better, haha. I may need to contact an admin or something.

EDIT2: solution was to open "Edit" in another tab and just edit the plain text. Whew!

EDIT3 (over a year later): updated twitter handle from "@hackslashmine" to "@frizzildev"

Hey folks, how's it going? It is in fact my birthday! So thanks for the well wishes.

While initially I was hoping to continue streaming updates on Twitch throughout chemo, it's sunk in pretty hard that I'm probably never going to feel animated enough for it. This round of chemo (4 of 12) has been by far the hardest, and if it gets any worse I seriously doubt I'll be able to stream anything until it's over. Hence, I've decided...

I'm going to update Hack/Mine once every one or two weeks, without streaming or anything, and post my progress to this thread on the day of. I'm still pretty productive despite feeling awful, so assuming that doesn't change things should continue moving along. The reason I say possibly every two weeks instead of one is that my chemo rounds are biweekly, and I'm unsure if I can find a day early into treatment where I'm up to the task... but we'll see. However, the first update will be today, so stay tuned!

@Aterruit: Thank you for the kind words, and I appreciate everything you've done for the mod and for the people who've played it. I realize it's very frustrating to see how long this has taken, but I don't think we're far from a release, and at that point as I promised it'll be open sourced. And if for some reason I become completely unable to update the mod, for whatever reason, I would open source whatever progress I've made in hopes that someone out there would continue to work on it. I'm sorry this has taken so long :/ Also, if you haven't heard me say it already, there's a strong chance the Nebulous Rax engine will manifest as Hack/Mine 2.0 in the future, possibly even the first thing I create with it, but it's too early to say if and when that will be the case. People know what HSM is and the name has visibility, so it's an idea with a lot of potential. It just depends a lot on how well executed some of HSM's "competitors" are around the time it would be released (Cube World, Trove, etc), as to whether it makes sense to pursue that route, and how feasible my goals for Nebulous Rax are, relatively, if I can raise funding, etc. But HSM 2.0 seems more and more likely to be the best choice, lately, fwiw. The reason I'm being so ambiguous about is that I'm genuinely undecided :/ Both game possibilities depend on all of my efforts thus far, and an HSM 2.0 could even reuse code from the existing project (but only from non-open-sourced versions, because I'm not a jerkwad.) I think I would be passionate about either one, so it's not really a question of which one I want to work on. Anywho...

Chemo round 5 is tomorrow, so wish me luck!

UPDATE: Worked on importing Hack/Mine blocks to the new version, everything is in order except for the textures (will have to cut up the existing spritesheet into little sprites, I think.) Got towers imported and compiling, but they aren't quite showing up yet, may just be a little bug away. I'm sure once they appear there will be other issues, so we'll see how that goes. I'll probably continue work tomorrow, I tend to be alrightish on the day of chemo, it's mostly 2-4 days after when it's the worst :P Whew!

    Hey again folks,

Tomorrow is chemo round three, wish me luck. Got a medi-port installed, which is *way* better (completely under the skin), so now I can shower and continue with Crossfit to an extent :) Otherwise, I've felt pretty awesome the past three days, despite feeling abysmal right after treatment, but I've been too busy with RL in the few days I've felt decent to put on a stream (was hoping to do today, but didn't quite work out.) In other news, tests came back and the cancer is negative for any known genetic conditions (though they're finding new stuff all the time), so that's good! Probably.

We'll do another packed weekend once I'm up to it, sorry that these streams are so staggered. I'm going to start working more on the mod during my off-time, so hopefully things get done more quickly that way!

    Stay tuned...

Hey folks, doing a stream tonight around 7ish CST!

Also, update on cancer: I was supposed to have chemo on Wednesday, but my WBC and platelet count were too low, so chemo is delayed until next Wednesday (and I've been on WBC increasing meds in the meantime.) Also, my catheter fell out literally two days after removal of stitches, so they're putting in a port-o-cath this Tuesday, which will be a minor operation. Fun times.

    Anyhow, see all you there!

Hi all, thanks for the encouraging words, it really means a lot :) Tomorrow marks one week of chemo, can't say it was pleasant but it could have been much worse! Most fortunate of all, I haven't had any neuropathy in my extremities yet (apart from a little morning tingle in my foot and wrist). However, my whole face kinda hurts whenever I taste something sweet, so we'll see how that goes, hah.

A word on the Technic launcher: they've taken HSM out essentially because it's in an old-as-crap/incompatible version of Minecraft, and they've assured me they'll re-include it as soon as it's in a more recent version. Sorry for the inconvenience :/ (but that is why we're updating!) I'll keep you guys updated on any changes with that.

i look forward to the good news =]

Thanks! Glad someone appreciated my guitar-ing, I was kinda aching to get something posted when I made it, and I'm happy that I did. We'll see about better produced posted stuff in the (hopefully near) future :) Thankfully, no neuropathy in my hands yet, so that's good.

I'm glad to see that you're getting better and working on bringing hack/mine back. Hack/Mine seems to be the true RPG mod in all of Minecraft. The other moods I seen claims to be an RPG mod, but I don't like it. But this seems to be a great mod. I hope to play this mod again.

Thanks! It was definitely a different take at the time I wrote it, though some more recent mods I believe have attempted some similar ideas (esp. with the rise of Cube World and Trove.) It probably helps that it doesn't take itself so seriously :) I hope I can get a dang update cranked out soon!

Hey folks, sorry to keep you waiting, I'm totally alive, just been bouncing around doctors and such, haven't had much time, nor a lot of news. Honestly I should have updated you guys sooner, sorry for being clueless. I actually thought I'd get an afternoon to stream since I'm feeling much better and recovered from the surgery (even better than before surgery, thankfully), but enough surprises have come up that I have yet to get a free night. (Been driving out of town every day for a week now to see a doctor, which I wasn't quite expecting to do.)

The oncologist I visited in Houston puts my 5 year survival rate with chemo at 86% (higher than standard estimate), and I've been informally told that the PT scan (which I mistook for a "nuclear enema") reveals no metastatic cancer in the lower areas, so all good so far. Still waiting on genetic test, since people my age have 33% chance of their cancer being genetic, mainly for possible Lynch Syndrome (one involved protein stained funny, so pending a more precise test). Last Friday I had minor surgery where they inserted a catheter that hooks up to a major artery in my chest, been healing just fine.

Chemotherapy starts tomorrow at 9:00 AM, during which I'll be sitting around for 4-6 hours or so (I actually planned on informing a bunch of people of status things during that time), no telling how that will go. I'll have a continuous stream of what are basically poisons pumped into me via the catheter over the next two days, then I'll wait two weeks before repeating the process. This will happen for about 6 months for a total of 12 treatments, after which I'd only need additional treatment if I'm in remission.

Main concern for me is the possibility of neuropathy in my hands from chemo, which wouldn't be fantastic considering both my profession and hobby of playing guitar. Obviously I'm very young, (avg age for colon cancer is 69, I'm only 24), so hopefully that plays to my favor and I have fewer side effects. Other concerns are possible infertility (hence driving to the sperm bank every day over the past week), getting infections, and a number of things that are highly variable and hence hard to predict. But I'm in pretty great health (apart from the cancer), so I'm not too terribly worried, I think I'll be able to recover from the worst of it.

My family has actually had a beach trip planned starting Saturday since before I was diagnosed, and we're hoping I'll be able to make it, but it's really hard to say. If I feel amazingly bad, I might just forgo the trip, then be able to stream once I've recovered -- otherwise, the stream would have to wait until I'm back. Blegh.

More personal health stuff, which is probably too much information (relates to other health crap I've mentioned in various places, figured I'd give you some explanation now that it's mostly figured out):

hip pain is still 99% better since colon resection, but occasionally comes back without stretching. The current theory is that I actually just had a muscle spasm and that the ridiculous amount of post-surgery anti-inflammatories, combined with improved posture from exercise, fixed a feedback loop of inflammation. But honestly who knows at this point, I'm just glad that it's *finally* better, haha. All the more fortunate that they found the tumor in that case. Weirdly, some other issues (tongue thrush, embarrassing chronic rash) were fixed quickly after surgery, probably because my immune system was in overdrive fighting the cancer mass and it finally got a break. Most interesting of all, I was taking an anti-inflammatory for fatigue since August with ridiculous improvement (novel treatment for CFS), but anti-inflammatories, specifically COX-2 inhibitors, are actually well-studied colon cancer suppressants among the ranks of chemotherapy, so it's possible I was getting relief for an alternate reason :) (it actually likely prevented me from being stage IV, which would have practically been a death sentence.) Otherwise, they have zero clue how long I've had this thing (maybe a year, maybe many many years), so it's hard to know exactly how it's affected me, apart from the obvious. TL;DR: I'm ridiculously lucky that they found this cancer and that it's as positive a prognosis as it is! Be insistent with your health care providers!

It's getting late so I'm gonna hit the sack, sorry to worry you all. (I should really change the thread title, shouldn't I?) There's not a lot of meaningful news, but definitely a lot of subjective experience on my part :) I'll give the thread a "nothing new" update by next Friday, just to be sure. Definitely don't want to go SSJ-Special-Snowflake with all of this, if you know what I mean. Tomorrow should prove, well, interesting, so wish me luck! Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Hey people, I've been discharged from the hospital, recovering really well. Got the path back, and everything looks great with one exception: liver was clean, area around incision was clean, but 2 out of 21 lymph nodes harvested were cancer positive. That's a very low ratio of lymph nodes affected, but regardless it seems I'll need some chemo to make sure the cancer never comes back. I'm gonna be just fine, no worries, it just means I'll have to do a little chemo, which sucks. No radiation therapy or anything like that. Otherwise, we're still waiting on information and to see an oncologist, at which point we'll know a lot more about treatment.

Obviously all of this is throwing a wrench in my plans, but I promise I'm still updating Hack/Mine, or if worst comes to worst, open sourcing it as incomplete or handing it over someone else (though I don't think either will be necessary.) I'm still committed to Nebulous Rax, but I have a feeling HSM will take precedence while I'm recovering.

Gonna update the OP now, seems reasonable. Again, thanks for your thoughts and prayers!

Update: surgery went really well, it doesn't look like the cancer has spread, and I'm recovering really quickly. I'm in a lot of pain, but otherwise I'm not worried. Should get pathology tomorrow or day afterwards, and we can rule out bad stuff for sure. Currently doesn't look like I'll have to do chemo, so hopefully everything keeps going well!

Sorry to worry any of you, this has all been really spontaneous, but I'm incredibly thankful they caught this so early. Life advice: be persistent in seeking useful healthcare! Don't let "Go see a chiropractor" be the answer when it hasn't improved anything in over a month.

In other news, they took out the catheter today, I've transitioned from a "clear liquid" to a "full liquid" diet, and I started pooping again ;) Fun times.

Will keep posting updates, thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks man, that means a lot. I'm recovering really quickly fwiw, might get out of the hospital tomorrow night,

It's hard not to worry... I really do hope things go well, and your life gets back in order, (and hopefully there won't be huge bills to pay!). It's awesome you're staying positive :D

Yeah, I have good insurance so no worries on the bills, thank goodness. I'll continue to be positive until there's good reason to worry :) Surgeon's opinions on cancer are almost always right, and they don't think on observation that it's bad -- lymph nodes around colon look great, and liver looks perfectly fine (first place it usually spreads too), so it's probably stage 2, possibly stage 3. Worst case is I have to do a little chemo, but even then the outlook is great.

Hey everyone, Frizzil here, I have some serious news:

I had a colonoscopy today, and by complete surprise, they discovered a two inch mass that appears malignant. Fortunately, though, it doesn't appear to have spread anywhere, and I'll be having surgery in the next few days (hopefully tomorrow) to remove it. After some testing we'll know for certain what kind of cancer I'm dealing with, what my outlook is, etc. However, it seems they caught it super early, which is great! Things are looking positive -- it's likely they'll just remove the affected section of the colon and I'll be better. And of course, I'm relieved to finally know what's been causing me pain! Not that I'm out of the woods... but thank God I asked my doctor for a colonoscopy, or I'd be in far worse trouble down the road!

If you've kept up or noticed the lack of streams over the last four weeks, you'll know that I haven't been well, and this would be a likely explanation to the problems I've been having (particularly the hip pain). I'll keep everyone posted as things progress -- I should have more info tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the support, and no need to worry just yet. Things currently look positive :)
