Risugami, thank you for ModLoader! Thank you for developing it and maintaining it and dealing with all the garbage that comes with being a Minecraft modder. ModLoader is a wildly influential mod and the Minecraft community does not thank you nearly enough. So, again, thank you.
Before I finish I have to throw out some love for Biosphere. A stroke of genius that one.
I am having issues running the smooth/multicore 1.2.5 updated optifine files.. But before I start whining and asking for help just wanted to say you have done a great job with this mod, and the continual updates are making this game considerably more playable. Big ups man.
Few specs; using an AMD Phenom X2 3.1 GHZ cpu with 4 gigs of ram, an nvidia geforce 9800gt, and running win vista 64.
I am experiencing FPS drops from 100 to 0 with the smooth version constantly (just found out this issue is completely fixed by using a bat script to allocate more ram),
& tremendous lag spikes while running the multicore version while maintaining a high fps. There are also large areas of chunks not being loaded & flickering occuring with the blocks on the multicore version.. That particular issue gets considerably worse while using 32x texture packs.
Going to attempt updating my graphic drivers but unsure what else I could do!
I would also like to mention that none of these issues are prevalent within the standard 1.2.5 update.
So, I am having a comparable issue to these two in reference to skip/jerk/lag spike. For me it happens on every version of Optifine that I try.
I've also noticed for me that it happens when I am in one small-ish area for a long period of time. These skip/jerk/lag spikes are almost nonexistent when I am traveling or moving around a large area.
(I'm kind of bumping this idea and letting these two know they are not alone.)
I have a question/observation about the "Lag Spike of Death" (LSD).
Back story:
My wife's laptop is our primary way of playing MInecraft. My desktop on the other hand could barely play Minecraft. I always assumed it was because it only had 1Gb of memory. I have since upgraded and added 4Gb of memory and while the computer runs better and Minecraft to an extent runs better, I still have the same problem with Minecraft.
Desktop Specs:
OS: MS Windows XP Home 32-bit SP3
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 541 Prescott 90nm Technology
RAM: 5.0GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 400MHz (5-5-5-31) (yes I know I can't use all 5GB)
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5N-E SLI (Socket 775)
Graphics: 256MB GeForce 7600 GT (BFG Tech)
Laptop Specs:
OS: MS Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2
CPU: AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-64 46 °C Tyler 65nm Technology
RAM: 3.0GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 313MHz (5-5-5-15)
Motherboard: TOSHIBA IALAA (Socket M2/S1G1)
Graphics: 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 (Toshiba)
Problem:
When I play MC on my desktop I get the "Lag Spike of Death"...sometimes. Sometimes I don't get it at all, sometimes I can't go more than a half a second without it happening. And it turns out I only get the "Lag Spike of Death" when I hang out in one small area for long periods of time.
My Diagnosis:
I went through many theories trying to figure out what was causing the LSD. From using the wrong Optifine to Windows XP not being compatible with MC and even the fact that I have a single core processor. I tested every version of Optifine while building my tree farm, and tallying every time I had an LSD. Turns out sp614x is right Smooth and Multi-core do reduce the number of LSDs that occur. I scoured the internet looking for some form of confirmation that Windows XP home and/or my processor has some sort of bug that made it incompatible with MC. The results were inconclusive.
I recently noticed I had a lot of LSDs when I was building my house, often to the point of being unplayable. Far more than when I was building my tree farm. I thought maybe it was my bed or that I have more tile entities in my house than by my tree farm. I think my tree farm is just big enough that while I was building it I wasn't in the "same place" for very long. Whereas my house was small enough that I was in the "same place" most of the time.
Wow! I just found out that OptiFine includes the ability to randomize mob textures! Ha! One less thing to install!
Thank you sp614x!
Which prompts a question: Is it even possible to have random bookshelf textures or random boat textures? I think the former would make for some cool libraries. But why stop there? Can flowers, grass, and mushrooms be randomized too?
Make this compatible with ControlPack. It's a useful mod, but using both of these just cancels out Optifine...
Wow, did you really just demand that he make this compatible?
Anyway.
sp614x your "Tips and Tricks" section on the OP is very intriguing. I haven't tried any of them yet as it's kinda late here. I also wanted to say thanks again for all of the hard work that you put into your mod!
It was just a temporary account and was not meant to stay long. Later when OptiFog started to get popular I didnt bother to change it. The "x" at the end was added when the minecraft.net accounts were switched to Curse and my original account "sp614" got blocked somehow. It was never meant to be pronounced, but maybe "sp 6 14 x" is correct.
That was a little less exciting than I thought it would be, but kind of humorous. Thank you for indulging my curiosity "Espysixfourteenex".
Sp614x, thanks for putting up with the nagging questions, and being so willing to make Optifine work with other mods. (I'm glad I wasn't the only one with flaming hoppers and TNT dispenser blocks.)
Not that this is in any way important, just curious: Is there a story behind your name or a way to pronounce it?
I have another question: Have you ever considered coupling a mod with one of your maps?
I came across a mod that I think is just up your alley. It is called Solar Apocalypse.
What it does is when I create a new map I have four days before the sun makes the surface of Minecraft unlivable. The first day is normal and by the fourth day all the grass is dead, the trees are barren, the water has evaporated (in v1.3), and anything alive on the surface is lit afire.
Running this mod on a saved map begins everything as though it was day four.
It's a fun mod. And it's kind of horrible. Which reminded me of you.

Thanks Risugami, you're awesome man!

So, is this a picture of two juicers side by side?

What do you guys think? Can anyone confirm this?

Well that is very cool and exciting! (And now I see it in the TODO list. I clearly need to learn to read everything)
Know what else is cool? You replied over a day after I posted! You actually read your forum! Crazy!

I think this will be the reason I download BuildCraft.

I run both Solar Apocalypse and OptiFine_1.7.3_HD_G and they work great for me.
I installed Solar Apocalypse first then Optifine. I think order of installation is a big deal when using OptiFine.

Your idea:
Have weather eventually disabled.
But what if instead:
All weather becomes grey snow. Like ash falling from the sky.
My base ended up in a snowy biome. When it snows against the backdrop of a burnt wasteland it has a very cool nuclear apocalypse effect.
Again. Nice job!

I hate to start off by making requests, but would you consider using the Minecraft Forge API? [Link]
