posted a message on Agrarian Skies Playthrough - 40 Episodes and Counting!
Hello everyone, Magelord Exelbirth here, sharing my Agrarian Skies playlist. I've been playing this for a while now, and have 40 episodes in this series already, with many more on the way. I've been enjoying figuring out my own personal way of setting up quests to be completed in this series, and have even done a few bonus videos on how to do some automation involving liquids in the pack. If any of this seems interesting at all to you, come check out the playlist here --> https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTJzZWWGqbOWaHUtEyqHAmkQwZ4d7nUon

I'll post new videos as they come out!

posted a message on Microsoft/Mojang Deal Confirmed.
So, it's been a couple days since this was announced, and I've had plenty of time to do some thinking about my opinions and reactions, along with seeing what other people have said.

Mainly, what I see on forums is fear and worry. Understandable. This is a pretty big change, and one that popped up with little warning. But honestly, I think this will be a good change. For one, Mojang didn't really have the structure to both manage the game's community and work on improving the game at the same time. They've done a great job so far, but I feel that both areas could be doing better, and Microsoft could make that happen.

Two of the biggest fears/worries I've seen are: Microsoft charging for new content/making minecraft not like minecraft; Microsoft restricting Youtube videos. In my opinion, I seriously doubt Microsoft is going to be foolish enough to do either of these things. Main reason: the community. Minecraft is one of the most owned games in the world, with over 54 Million copies being sold across all platforms. That's huge. That's 4 million more copies sold than the entire Halo series combined. Now, the key difference there is that most of the halo sales were to the same people for each game, meaning that while halo has sold millions of copies, they are to a significantly smaller audience than minecraft. So, do you really think the heads at Microsoft would be willing to risk angering potentially 50 million people, which would likely cause those people to boycott other microsoft products? And I haven't even brought up the Youtube community.

While minecraft is a record selling game, what truly propelled it forward was Youtube. Minecraft and Youtube have had a symbiotic relationship for nearly all of minecraft's existence. Youtube is where people first heard of it. It's where people go to share creations. It's where people demonstrate ideas. And it's where minecraft has proven to be more than just another game (I'll talk about what I mean in a bit). While most of the people who watch minecraft videos on youtube are minecrafters themselves, there are people who watch that don't have any interest in owning minecraft. So if Microsoft did anything that restricted videos, there'd be people who don't even own the game that could potentially develop a sour attitude towards Microsoft.

So, what did I mean by minecraft being more than just another game? What I mean is that it has surpassed the limits of being a game. It has become a tool that people can use for many different things. It can be used to teach. It can be used to make video series. But mainly, it can be used to create new games. For instance, all the mini-games people have made using minecraft's in-game mechanics, like spleef or capture the flag. There's also games people have made using minecraft's out of game mechanics, like Dwarves VS Zombies.

Then there's mods. Some mods are complete overhauls of minecraft, like Terrafirma Craft, which so drastically changes minecraft that it really is like a whole new game. Then there are modpacks, which combine different mods together in a way that changes how you play minecraft. They can be as simple as adding a very small amount of things to vanilla, leaving the game similar, but with a few more things you can build, or they can be as complex as overhauling the game in a manner that makes you require a well balanced diet while you struggle to gather the materials together so you can upgrade your pickaxe with a steel head (that would be the Epiccraft pack). Modpacks have essentially become games that you can pop into and out of minecraft, much in the same way you pop a disc into your console.

Another reason Microsoft probably won't change anything with minecraft is that it could drive people towards upcoming competition. There have been plenty of games that have come out, trying to copy what minecraft is, without really trying to innovate anything. That's tapered off quite a bit though, and what we're seeing are games that really take the basics of minecraft, and go for some innovation. For example, TUG. This game is still in alpha, but has almost as much potential as minecraft did in its own alpha stage. What's more, the devs actually have a few goals they want to see with the game, something minecraft didn't really have in the beginning. There's also the fact that TUG is being backed and covered by the Yogscast, who are one of the biggest names in the minecraft community.

So, will Microsoft mess with minecraft? Only if they want to severely cripple their company. So what reason does microsoft have for buying mojang then, if not to do anything with minecraft? This is just a guess, but they could be hoping for the genius that created such a long-standing, best selling game to come from their studios once again. Perhaps they want to create a minecraft 2 and hope that it sells as many copies as minecraft already has. All in all, Microsoft's purchase is highly unlikely to change anything, and has more potential to do good than bad if it does.

    posted a message on A Magelord Tale - FTB Direwolf20 Pack 1.6.4
Hey there everyone, Magelord Exelbirth here with a new Let's Play series featuring the Direwolf20 FTB Modpack version 1.6.4. In this series, I'm going to focus my episodes on learning how to use the various mods, and how they can synchronize with each other. I have also added a couple mods to the pack like Magical Crops and Mariculture, for a little bit more flavor. I hope to see a coupe of you swing by to check things out, and I hope that the videos prove to be educational and informative.

And I come to this mod again, fondly remembering the wonderful times I had with it, creating a jungle-top house system lit by magical torches that served as my home when I was a fledgling mage king. This mod had so much potential, and it always makes me sad to see how it's now dead, with little hope of ever being revived. Fortunately, there is Ars Magica, which provides significantly more spells, plus the ability to create your own spells.

posted a message on [Challenge] Castle Building Challenge
Hey all. Been doing this challenge a while now, but I have no screenshots to share. Instead, I have a video series. Check it out if you want:

I'm actually doing the challenge with a bit of a twist: I'm using some mods that fit the medieval style of this challenge, primarily magic mods like Ars Magica and Thaumcraft. I do go by the title Mage King in other videos of mine, so I figured it made sense to add magic to my world, which will actually give the wizard's tower later on some actual use.

I've worked my way to the iron age and am about to advance to the golden age, which is going to force me to remodel my castle a bit. But will I get to do it before a disaster ends up striking my village?

posted a message on Thaumcraft 3.1? (not 4)
In regards to spellcasting, I'd like to point out that ars magica is a mod essentially centered on spell casting, and has a spell creation system recently implemented. If you do add spells, perhaps some collaboration between this mod and ars magica? It would be pretty epic to be able to use both mods, essentially using the magic within you (ars magica) and the magic tied to the world (thaumcraft) to become powerful magi.

Really want to do this map for a Let's Play. Sadly can't download it right now, which makes me even sadder since I consider this map to be a gem in a forum full of copy/pasted survival island/skyblock ripoffs.

posted a message on Has Minecraft Gotten Worse?
    Quote from DiggedyBeat

    Snip

I've been a minecraft member since alpha, so I know how boat mechanics have changed, and I'm glad for them as it's more stable than they were in the past. The furthest boats ever float away from me after I get out of them is about 3 blocks, which isn't bad since I'm not lazy.

Again, slimeballs, cocoa beans, and apples were less valuable due to their scarcity (or lack of use in the case of slimeballs) and could hardly be called a trophy in the same sense as the dragon egg. The dragon egg can be called a trophy due to having to do something challenging to actually get it. In the past, acquiring slimeballs, cocoa beans, and apples were simply a thing of luck.

No, not everything in the universe is opinion based. Fire is hot: fact, not opinion. Snow is cold: fact, not opinion. Water is wet: Fact, not opinion. Space is a vacuum: fact, not opinion. You're sanity is questionable: fact, not opinion.

Speaking of questionable sanity, no, you're not comparable to MLK. He was a voice against discrimination and a hero. You are a whiny nobody on a forum that is more comparable to the people trying to stand in the way of the progress MLK was leading.

I did respond to all of your arguments. I stated that a majority of your arguments are opinion based, optional content, or subjective. Since the opinion based stuff and subjective stuff are your on personal experiences, they can't be put forward as an argument about why minecraft is bad, just as an argument why you don't like minecraft. (yes, those are two separate things, though you might not be able to comprehend that with the way education works) and since the other one is optional content, nobody cares whether you like it or not since you can choose to never experience it.

Also, I never said shut it to you, maybe you should read what I said more closely and see who I actually said it to.

One more thing: your solution to downgrade minecraft is the same as saying "i'd rather drive the gas guzzling rust bucket from the 40's instead of the reliable hybrid that came out last year."

    Ugh, more garbage.

Ok, so reading through these posts I can already say this is basically a copy/paste of every other "minecraft sucks now, I miss the old stuff" threads. Literally, you haven't said anything that hasn't been said before, and your claim about making this thread so you can help make minecraft better is pretty much rubbish since most of the things you said are entirely opinion based, optional content, or subjective (I for one still have a hell of a time getting diamonds without strip mining as I don't often run into desert or temple jungles with out constant exploration of the surface.) You also haven't actually said any way of "making minecraft better."

I find boats are way easier to dock and control now, and don't spaz out as much on smp.

I prefer sheering my sheep as opposed to killing them and having to search the entire world for more when the nearby ones are dead. Besides, if you don't have iron by the second day, you aren't that good at minecraft.

yes, the dragon egg is a trophy item. It can actually be placed in the world as a block on a pedestal in a shrine dedicated to how you came to the end and kicked the dragon out of it's scales. Slimeball? Cocoa beans? you could put those in a chest and never look at them again as they get buried under mountains of cobblestone, dirt, and actual useful items.

oh, and MartyLoup: Your opinion isn't fact, so shut it.

I've been sifting through garbage threads trying to find challenges for my LP series. I recently failed the tree spirit/dryad challenge, but can't find much more than "go underground" or "challenge for this mod" stuff.

I'd like to point out that this doesn't seem like an adventure map. Adventure maps typically involve, well, adventuring. This map seems to be all about surviving on this little rock.

I do have an issue with this. You have it tagged as survival, but in the rules forbid most of what playing a survival map is about (which is basically do what you can to survive.) I do think this map looks amazing, but is purely an adventure map.
