posted a message on Help please - Lag in SSP
Is there any way to eliminate this horrific Lag in this version? In Single Player - I can start a world and arrive unable to move, 20 seconds later I can move but every sound causes a Hang for 5-7 seconds Reverberating the sound, and turning OFF sounds doesn't seem to help.

I even increased Java's priority - If it helped it wasn't enough to notice.

This is a Quad Core machine with a GeForce 430. I can play Skyrim without a hitch, but MineCraft barely operates.
(When I stand still for a while it runs normally, but as soon as I move it starts stuttering and freezing again)

Checked Java, newest version, 64 bit, as is the Win 7 (fully updated) and not much else installed. Skyrim, DDO, and a cloud drive (which I kill in Processes before I try to run MineCraft)

posted a message on Echo is killing Minecraft!
I reformatted a couple of weeks ago, and only now got around to installing Minecraft - and I'm seriously disappointed in the new patch.

Everything I do that has a sound attached causes a barely noticable lag - which I can accept. But if I am moving or turning when a sound happens it starts an intollerable Echo that gets several times louder than anything else in the game.

I seriously doubt it is my PC since I play Skyrim with everything maxed and never get so much as a hiccup.

Is this something being fixed in the next snapshot or should I just give up on MineCraft for another month or so?

I don't see where it would require much change to the game at all. The server itself would be significantly modified, and the requirements to host it would be vastly greater than what we need/use to host mutliplayer sessions..
But the client-side would only require the addition of handling for quest context and a secure login for accessing the game server.
Everything else is already in the game client.

But sadly, I agree, it will probably never happen.

Most of us have -by now- played on any number of Multiplayer servers and had everything wiped out when they shut down, reformatted, had a crash of some sort.. whatever.

I have been pondering - wouldn't it be great to have a Minecraft MMORPG? Akin to the multiplayer servers, but most things are Uneditable, with specified areas available for "mining" blocks and plots for housing/(tree/vegie) farming.
A Lasting multiplayer shard where the NPCs offer quests, give special rewards that can't be gathered or crafted, with mobs tied to regions for spawning in a sensible manner (sheep on flat grasslands, skeletons from stone caves).

I suspect complex mods are difficult to update until MCP is updated... so this may be a while?

Actually MCP was updated within a day or two of 1.4 releasing. I think it is more to do with the fact that the creators of these mods do them as a hobby, in their free time.. so it can take a while for them to get around to updating.

I miss this one most.. mo' creatures a close 2nd.

posted a message on buying minecraft
    Quote from blksquirrel »
ok so i have a question and cant really find it anywhere. when you purchase minecraft do you have to pay monthly/yearly or is it pay once and have it for good? thanks for reading and sorry if its in the wrong section.

If you buy the game "now" you never have to pay again..

Except : After it is released for full retail (beta is over), Expansions might cost extra.

There is no subscription fee for playing it.. since it is actually designed as a Single Player Game.
And to play it Online - people set up servers on their home PC or even pay for dedicated VPS and allow you to log in for free.

posted a message on Tree Climbing Creepers?!?!?!?!?!?!?
The point of them spawning on foliage on FAST setting only applies to SSP.

On SMP, the spawn code assumes FAST is always on. So on Multiplayer - creepers can, and Do (very much) spawn in trees.
In fact.. my personal observation is that foliage is like a Spawn Booster for creepers.

Try planting 120 or so trees in close proximity on SMP, use torches to get them all packed in tightly, then watch the tops at night from a safe distance. You'll see what I mean.

im sorry but does anyone else think it is the STUPIDEST IDEA to make cocoa beans spawn in dungeons?
i mean A) dungeons are hard to find :cool.gif: even if you do find them, cookies only heal half a heart. and C) why make something so rare that has multiple uses?
is it soo hard to just make them occasionally drop from trees?

It makes perfect sense - if 1.5 comes with the addition of Planting them to grow a Bush that drops them from the foliage, etc.

That's the thing about progressing in beta.. you can't ever assume something is "complete" in its current form.

posted a message on Glowstone: Sign of a cheater in SMP?
Depending on the setup - we really can't tell you if someone had to cheat. There are many ways to get it without /give.. depending on the mods you have running.

For example : if you have Runecraft on the server..
Rune for Magic Beacon creates pillars of glowstone.
-- yes it vanishes if you hit it, but you can also use Uncraft rune to power a pick and get the dusts it would-have taken to build those glowstone blocks.

posted a message on Negative Symbolism of Minecraft
Good for a chuckle, but requires dispensing with rational thought to approach any form of credibility.

Particularly the idea around the Apple.. which does Not carry the connotative sense that you credit to it.
It is a very small minority who would attach the apple to a sense of evil.

The Apple, on a global scale, symbolizes foremost - Health. To a lesser degree, as a symbol of education - particularly among children.

posted a message on Mod forum for Versions?
Since we can't use Search on here to narrow to mods that work with a given version, can we at least get a separate forum section for the current and most recent 1 or 2?
Having to dig through page after page of 1.2 and 1.3 mods to find the ones that work in 1.4 is getting old.

Of all the mods I've messed with lately, this is the one I'm missing in 1.4 . The absence of their humming is downright distracting.

I'm not pressuring or asking anyone to rush an update.. I'm just letting you know that we enjoy the mod. :smile.gif:

posted a message on I see a problem here. A problem with Minecraft.
    Well I don't kiss anyone's anything. :tongue.gif:
I worked on games that - while not Indie - make Minecraft look like the Hobby it began as.. EverQuest(original only) and Vanguard among them.

But if he is doing as he says we aren't losing anything. The same changes are going in at the same rate, but we aren't seeing them until there is significant change to warrant a version.
This means we can expect More new features and content when there Is an update, and that our mods will continue to work for more than a week at a time.

still, that doesnt change its architecture from x86-16 to x88.:tongue.gif:

No, it doesn't make the 86 an 88.
But back to the original point.. which "First" were you talking about? :tongue.gif:
    First designed, 8088
    First used in PCs, 8088
    First in manufacture, 8086

.. I really miss my first 8088. I kept it functional until I lost it completely in the big flood here in 2007.
