posted a message on Better Than Wolves (Now With Bloody Stumps) Total Conversion! [V4.A2 Timing Rodent b upd: Nov 27th]
BTW has always (well, since I read about it) intrigued me, but I've been a little reluctant to try it because I'm not sure if I'm a bad enough dude to save the president play this hardcore a style.

But I did recently try an experiment in vMC, fueled by a combination of curiousity about HCBeds and irritation with the dithering that was going on in an LP I was watching. I tried starting a world with the goal to get the most out of every Minecraft hour - spending the day mostly outside, staying up all night, and aiming for speed. The result was surprisingly fun - it spaces out the normal start-up activities in a different way, and encourages having multiple projects to work on.

So, next time I get the perserverence to do a major building project, I'm jumping in.

posted a message on Bring Back Potion Cauldrons
Sounds good. Maybe it should hold more than three potion's worth though - potion flasks seem pretty small compared to a cauldron, and a chest holds 27.

Acting as a super-splash-potion when broken sounds fun, especially if pushing the cauldron with a piston triggers it.

I like this idea. Maybe make them full of villager zombies, meandering aimlessly in and out of the houses.

posted a message on Disabling cheats
Well that's not really a mod, but sure, I don't see any issue with this being more easily accessible.
Of course, I prefer cheats to be on when playing an adventure map, so that if something glitches I can fix it.

posted a message on Wither Skeleton Stone Sword Rare Drop
I would rather see Wither Skeletons being a bit rarer but have the head drop more frequently. Or make it so you need to kill them in the correct way (like getting records from Creepers). Random rare drops just mean grinding.

As for the stone swords, they're pointless but not actually harmful - AFAIK, it's not like they appear instead of a head, they drop when a head wouldn't. Having some kind of purpose for them would be nice though - maybe allow grinding or smelting them to get a component for a wither potion.

posted a message on Monster Spawning Behavior in 1.3 and later
I have to agree. I've tried using TNT a bit and come the conclusion that it's a tool for:
    A ) Creative mode.
B ) People with Mob Grinders.

Find and fight a bunch of Creepers to get a rather anemic explosion that's mostly just for fun anyway? It's not good for mining because it sometimes destroys the ore. It's not great for excavation because you need large quantities to outstrip what a plain pickaxe can do, and it leaves an uneven hole anyway. And for combat? Don't make me laugh.

posted a message on Don't villagers seem to defeat the purpose of MineCraft?
I somewhat feel the same way. I mean, villages are kinda cool, the villagers add another element to interact with ... BUT, I really liked the aesthetic of being alone, in a new land, never even knowing what was the true story behind it. Were you a survivor of a previous civilization? The first person to exist? A voyager from another land? It could be anything.

Turning structures off is an option, of course. But I'd really prefer some finer detail than all-or-nothing. For example, being able to have strongholds, dungeons, nether fortresses, and desert/jungle temples on without villages or mineshafts would be ideal.

posted a message on What's wrong with my base?
Actually, as someone who's been playing Minecraft for a while - don't use the wiki, or at least not more than you absolutely need to. Learning how everything works was a lot of fun, and you only get one chance to do it.

Some tips to get you started though:
    * You don't need to use F3 - light level is determined by how far you are away from a light source, so try some different patterns and find out how closely you need to put your torches.
    * Water behaves rather oddly in Minecraft - get a bucket and do some experimenting. With practice, you can make ornamental fountains, conveyer belts for your farms, and small pools that provide an infinite supply of water.
    * Since you have a lot of stone, make a stone axe and sword. It should make harvesting trees a lot easier. Also, you can grow trees underground if you light it brightly enough.

No complaint about faster levels here - grinding does not equal skill. Now what I'd personally like is some more actual stages of advancement, like seeking out new resources or building special structures, but just grinding - nope, don't miss it.

posted a message on We Waited So Long For Nothing
Stuff like Emeralds and colored wood may be unnecessary, but it's also an order of magnitude less work than a Mod API. They would have made maybe 5% more progress on the API by ditching those features. Especially as a lot of these were probably done in parallel.

Also, I think there is somewhat of a practical reason - to provide an incentive for SSP players to switch to 1.3. The merge is going to be at best neutral and more likely a negative change as far as SSP is concerned, and the benefits may take several versions to kick in. So without some new features, this would be like an anti-update for a significant portion of the player base.

posted a message on Proposal: Eliminate mob grinders
The thing is - Minecraft combat is just not that amazing. It's just spamming LMB and moving around a bit, there's not a ton of skill or strategy involved. It's ok for what it is - a hazard you have to deal with, some entertainment during the night. But it's hardly some awesome thing to be put as the pinnacle of the game.

The awesome in combat mostly comes from when you go outside the box. In fact, that's why I support getting all drops (including XP) from any method of mob death. Because if I boot a creeper off a cliff 300-style, or shove a skeleton into a cactus field, or otherwise trick foes to their doom, that's better than normal sword-spamming, and deserves the full reward.

So IMO, while building a grinder may or may not be an engineering feat (some are, some aren't), it's at least as creative as running around swinging a sword a bunch of times.

posted a message on Are there any artist impressions on what the merge of ssp/smp?
    Quote from Divinius

Actually, I think a LOT of people understand this... I'd even say most people do. I understand it perfectly.

What I also understand (and this is 100% true) is that the side-effect of this is putting all the SMP bugs into SSP as well (try the snapshot and see for yourself). The "hope" from the community is that they will actually then FIX all of those bugs, BEFORE releasing the official update that makes the merge official, and irreversible.

Most of the people complaining about the merge (well, the mature and intelligent ones at least) do indeed completely understand WHY they are doing it, we just don't really believe that all the bugs will actually be gone before the merge is officially thrust upon us.
This. I understand what the benefits are, they just don't personally help me much because I play SSP. And bugs aside, there's little stuff, like the fact that "Pause" no longer truly pauses things - there's no upside to that. So while you can say that the game as a whole is getting better, for SSP its currently a negative, and won't break even for quite a while.

    Quote from Taiine

Why is everyone whining abnd moaning about this? NO ONE is forcing you to play SMP, it's OPTIONAL to let you invite your friends or whoever ino your world. They are joining the two for this reason.

Incorrect. They are modifying the game so that "single player" is actually a client running on a local one-person server. Now there are definitely benefits to doing it this way, such as only having a single code-base, and making it possible to switch a single-player game to multi-player mode. However, it does mean that you will get certain SMP issues, and there is no way to "opt out" of that.
