If you mean the giant voids in the landscape from top to bottom I'm pretty sure that's a mapping error, it's not really like that in game. If you mean the couple spots where someone stripped dirt from a couple hills, yeah, lil bit of an eyesore. :sleep.gif:

Could I please join? Also, is the persister allowed if you don't use hacks? I just want to keep my items when I log out. My IGN is agarrett. Thanks if you let me in!

This server is constantly greifed due to all the faggots that got left in.

Constantly? Laughable. A couple of isolated incidents, which is a lot better than most servers can hope for.

Anyway, I'm curious Kin on if we're going to start on a new map with biomes when it becomes available? I think it might be a blessing in disguise as well, the current map is great i have no issues with it, but the new features would be lovely, and on top of that now have enough people that we know who we want around and who isn't exactly into following some pretty easy rules.

Ok so I've got a few days now under my belt in my new home, and just to give people an idea of what's going on in this place. First off, I've been to a few servers and found the majority of regulars are nice people, and this is the same - everyone is good natured. The difference between Kin's place and the others, is Kin's effort to keep it a friendly and constructive place. There has been one grief attempt which was squelched pretty quickly, with minimal damage (lost maybe 20 trees at spawn which were replanted and regrown easily) - and this single grief was from a person who was invited on a recommendation, so it was someone who was willingly allowed access. Unfortunately after a couple hours of him being a normal player, he turned griefer - but was dealt with accordingly.

But back to the point - Kin is an active and level headed admin of the server. He's been keeping it up to date with the wrapper, attempting to mod it to suit further needs, and in the course of our playing on his server, a couple of holes/bugs in the wrapper have been found, duly pointed out to the author, and hence the wrapper was updated with fixes rather quickly. Not that we're taking credit for anything, just pointing out that Kin is on top of issues and not only addresses them on the server, but passes that information on to people who need it.

The atmosphere here is loose and friendly, while still having some set-in-stone rules to maintain a desired type of gameplay. This server aims to be what it says - Vanilla. No freebies, no shortcuts, etc. AFAIK the only thing that was given exception for this was an obsidian PvP arena (for when the time comes) near spawn. It's a tasteful structure and was necessary to be obsidian for obvious reasons. Besides that, you earn what you have here 100%. The diamond system is outlined in the initial post, and has been working very well for allowing people to work towards building assets and not be pissed when they crash or have to log. Besides the obvious implications of a vanilla gameplay + no griefing, the only other rule I can think of is a loose respect for aesthetics. That is, don't leave pillars around, don't half chop trees, don't build something blatantly ugly/formless, and try to respect the *look* of the natural environment as you exploit it. Want to strip mine? Go for it! But try to do it in such a way that there isn't a giant crater open to the air. Need to gather 2 stacks of sand for glass - perfectly fine, just take an extra 2 minutes during your shoveling and try to keep the shoreline somewhat normal looking - don't just gouge out a focused hole/trench in a small area. This isn't so much a rule as it is a convention we're trying to uphold. I don't think you'd get banned for an offense such as this, but don't be surprised if someone covers your stripmine crater with some dirt and trees to return the hillside contours. It doesn't take much time at all to be a little smart about *how* you exploit the environment to keep it from looking ravaged.

I'm not sure how many regulars there are exactly, but of the ones I have been playing with, we all have our established homesteads, several players have begun a "trading post" and that in turn triggered a mini-economy to emerge. Now we are all stockpiling various ores, some of which we store in our forts, and some more valuable assets are buried in a (hopefully) secluded and secret area - just incase. As of now I've not heard or suspected anyone of theft, and plenty of fair trades in materials have been made.

In short (sorry for rambling), it's been a completely enjoyable experience. I see a lot of discussion about how griefing, and theft, and destruction is "part of" SMP and therefore is acceptable or *to be expected* - but this server proves that doesn't have to be the case. Here we all share a common desire to play a cooperative type of game without shortcuts, and that is what we have in this server. We are not opposed to PvP, infact plenty of us have theorized about alliances and battles - so our peaceful way of life right now doesn't necessarily mean a boring future... but I have complete faith that when the time comes for PvP, the result of a battle lost will likely be your (obvious) vaults raided and not the complete decimation of your land by TNT.

TL;DR - In short, best server yet for the player who knows the varying differences between cooperation, competition, honor, and grief.

I've noticed some glitchiness in the leaves being destroyed after cutting down the trunk of a tree. Sometimes they won't be destroyed (like some of those huge trees that have log blocks hiding among the leaves). A little fire will clear out those leave pretty fast. Just be careful not to let it spread.

I've found leaves will persist in two circumstances even without a trunk in the tree:

    - If they're connected to soil, like on a hillside where the top of the tree (it's leaves) is against soil and on top of it.

    - If they're connected to another tree's leaves, regardless if that tree has it's own trunk. So if you fully chop a trunk down in tree A and do the same to tree B, but their leaf canopies are touching, they will persist and not fall apart.

As soon as you separate the leaves from contact with soil or other trees, they begin to die off normally.

And obviously if there is a single piece of trunk left touching any of the leaves, that will cause it to persist as well.

Great server, having a blast. Community is top notch, everyone is not only friendly and helpful but has a great sense of humor. You can bust the admin's balls without worrying about a ban or some childish reaction.

Only rageworthy part is me staring at "kicked by admin" cause playercap is reached! I'm sure they're laughing at me from inside the server. Watching, and laughing.

    I have the obsidian too.

I've also noticed that stairs (the new kind, not the half blocks) don't seem to work properly, I can't get them to change their orientation, it's always the same direction. And if you drop a tool and then pick it back up, it goes back to full durability (I suppose it's a bug even tho it's friggin awesome).

posted a message on Was that tunnel there before?
I had a similar situation happen, built my base up to what I was happy with in a small hillside (it's like a hobbit hole heh), then started dropping a couple shafts until I found a tunnel system. One was expansive with tons of offshoots but I eventually explored and mined it fully and never truly got lost completely, some wrong turns or "wait a minute..." moments, but never lost. Then on my 2nd shaft heading in a completely diff direction I found a new system, this one was way more complex and like you, I kept hitting new openings while mining the ones I hadn't even explored yet. At one point I got so completely lost, and had just located a new huge opening, that I both didn't want to die and did not want to lose this new spot - so I just started stairstepping up to the surface. I pop up to the surface, and luckily I could see my giant floating beacon of stone & torches that I put high above my basecamp. I pillared up to a similar height, built another marker for this location, dropped some torches around and sealed the hole, and headed back to base on the overland.

I was REALLY far away for just tunneling through a system, I could barely see my faint beacon which was *just* within the farthest of clip ranges, so I had a major sigh of relief when I spotted that beautiful torch covered floating stone arrow in the sky.

Wait... so there are people who weren't using stone to contain lava? Seriously?

So people had wooden constructs for lava? Why? Stone is so much easier to obtain, not to mention that I wouldn't even consider trying wood because I figured this feature was already in game anyway.

I'm really confused how so many people are being screwed by this - certain cases sure I get it, but widespread? Seems odd to me. Do the little lava flareups (the lil spark flying thingies) ignite stuff? I assumed no.

posted a message on Dungeons above ground?!
Just made me think that random "buried treasure" in sand and dirt would be awesome, would only spawn within 2-4 blocks down from grass bearing dirt or coastal sand. Whereas dungeons seem to be mostly found by exploring cave systems, this would be completely random and just nice little surprises when you're building/mining.

Does full screen really chop off viewing instead of just stretching the aspect ratio? I hadn't been paying attention cause I have only been playing a few days and always fullscreen it - I'll have to change my habit if that is the case!

posted a message on Are mushrooms too rare?
I can confirm both brown and red do appear in deep caves. I've only been playing a couple days, and only found a couple of each kind total - but just today while mining a dungeon I found 1 brown and 1 red in the course of my mining, on a map that was created new today. It would make more sense though that they are out at nighttime in the outside world, mushrooms certainly are more abundant there in the real world than in deep dark crevices in the earth. :wink.gif:
