    More progress!

This time we're got spruce trees, some flowers, mushrooms and mossy cobblestone!

Images in the spoiler to prevent the page coming a loading nightmare:

Updates may have slowed down, but I've found I prefer to wait before posting until I have more than 1 or two textures done. There have also been a lot of smaller tweaks to colours, especially with the biomes. I've also added a bit of shading to the side grass after feedback from the Texture Artists Union thread and in this thread (thanks, J). Does the new transition work?

    Any feedback is appreciated. :)

Some problems, anyone free to make a step-by-step explanation how to place an imgur gallery in my posts/threads?

Would be great and reduce the size of my posts.

Yeah, it was rather frustrating for me to figure out, too.

Basically, if you want to include an album- let's use http://imgur.com/a/1234 as an example- you need to format it like this:

    [-imgurgallery]1234[/imgurgallery]

Just be sure to remove the hyphen I included in the first tag; that's just so you could see the code.

    Does that help?

Finally found a way to create a basic gif to showcase the water. It's nothing show-stopping, but I'm really satisfied with it. Also featured: reeds.

It was rather hard to make the gif loop- the actual animation loops just fine. The pack's progressing nicely now, with an actual colour scheme slowly developing (small incremental changes to the biome pallet slowly build up). Working on some plants next.

What do you guys think of the water?

As I said previously, the normal stone's much too green for my tastes. It also has a little bit of a tiling error at the bottom. I think the sidegrass could use a shadow underneath, otherwise it kinda looks like it's simply been pasted on to the dirt. Stone variants and leaves are looking great.

Funny you should mention the stone, since this version's been remade from scratch- I wasn't a fan of my previous stone, since it was too bluish for my liking. The green tinge is definitely not going away though, since it was intentional. Might tweak it with time, as I slowly figure out what colour scheme I'm going for.

I'll definitely give the grass a look though. I hadn't noticed it, but now that you've mentioned it it's really obvious. Gah!

The iron golem's great, by the way. I love how you did the arms.

So I've been working some more on my pack, and was wondering if you guys would like to give some opinions (positive or negative):

New birch trees, reeds, ores, diorite and stone. Would love to hear how you guys think about how the different stone textures mesh, as well as general feedback. The water's new too, but a screenshot can't do it justice.

Hi Alvoria, just wanted to say thanks for this guide. It's well-written and to-the-point. It's been a lot of help with my current pack. :)

Huh, that can be rather problematic, though I'm not sure it's quite as bad as you're describing. We need to consider a few points:

    • How many people actually use Curse for Minecraft? How big is the overlap with people who actively seek out and browse for new resource packs? Maybe I'm just a bit of a dinosaur, but I've never used Curse's client, myself.
    • People who use resource packs usually use the same ones they've been using for ages, and usually gravitate to the big names through word of mouth. The number of people who actually browse this forum and look for new packs isn't very high, in the grand scheme of things.
    • How difficult will it be to have your resource pack added to this new system? I mean, all resource packs use the same layout, so it's not like mods where you have to worry about how it's been coded and its compatibility with other mods. Who knows, maybe this'll help get more people interested in resource packs and expand the audiences for many packs.

In any case, I think what we might see is just that the bigger packs will get even bigger, while smaller packs will not see a substantial increase or decrease in use. The same people who actively seek out new packs will still do so, since they were already willing to look for new packs despite the relative inconvenience.

Or maybe I'm just overly-optimistic, heh.

posted a message on Dokucraft, The Saga Continues.

I think it's important to keep in mind that a lot of the stuff in this project are derivatives of Doku's original work, and I'm not sure about the legality of using anything in this pack for profit. I know he said his textures were FFA, but did that include for-profit projects? I think we had this very same debate when ad.fly links were being considered back when the project was starting out.

As for your question on tile the stone slabs (first row, 2nd and 3rd from the left), the log (2nd row, 5th from the left) and the sandstone (2nd row, fifth from the right) are Dokucraft originals, unless I'm mistaken.

posted a message on WIP: ZigZag! (a stylized pack for 1.8 and someday lots o' mods)

Looking great! If I had to nitpick, I'd say that the shading in the ores is slightly inconsistent- the lapis and iron have an embedded look to them, which looks great, but the others don't. Maybe try giving the rest of the ores that same embedded look?

Other than that, I'm loving the style you've got here. It's really unique and, well, professional-looking.

Edit: Rekonin's right, I was talking about the redstone and the lapis rather than the iron. Apparently I'm going colourblind, lol.

Oh believe me, I'm capable of stuff far more interesting. But I have to
work with MC's engine only allowing on / off transparency for these
menus. That, and the hard-coded text...

A non smartass response would be much appreciated.

Well, the use of the fill bucket in your image is the crux of the issue. The problem is there's not much going on- you've got a neat design at the bottom and a frame, but that's it. The rest is empty.

Try figuring out what kind of design you're going for with your UI. It seems you're making it look like a sort of plaque right now, which is cool- you can work with that. Try adding a metallic sheen, and some frame or design around the slots to add detail. Some embedded and embossed designs could look neat. There's plenty you can do without transparency.

The hardcoded text might appear to be a problem, but you can use it to your advantage- the text is the perfect excuse to change up the design in that part of the interface. Try making the text a separate plaque, or give it a different frame with a slightly different design. The idea is to have a relatively modular design (which can be repeated in other interfaces and slots) with enough variety to look interesting.

Thanks! I'm glad you're liking it so far. :)

Progress report on the water: it's starting to come together. Needs further polish. Also I need to get hold of some screencapping software.

So, uh, there seems to be an issue with the site- the download links in the OP just lead to a 404. Just thought I'd point that out.

I tried adding in some shadows to the diamond, but it turned out a bit odd. I think I like the current look for now. I did however, add in a bit of a glow.

Oh, and emeralds, too. And birch trees. We've got birch trees now.

I'm pretty happy with how they fit in with the existing oak trees in forests. Any critique? Something you guys don't like? As always, feedback (positive or negative) is more than welcome. :)

Oh, and as for current plans:

    • Working on water now. It's not easy, but I'm slowly getting there. I'll post something when I feel it's starting to look halfway-decent.
    • I've got basic concepts for the sun and moon, as well as some interface designs I'll be messing around with.
    • I need to start giving the biome triangle some serious attention. I'm not very happy with it at the moment.
    • Lava, water and clay are still the biggest challenges up ahead. Once those are out of the way, I'll start looking at the possibility of releasing some WIP version of the pack for folks to mess around with, if there's any interest.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys! As always, it's very much appreciated. :)

Despite appearances, this project's not dead- far from it. Real life's been a bit interesting, but things have indeed calmed down and I'm not faced with more free time than I've had for years, which gives me plenty of time for texturing.

    Anyways, on to the pack.

    • I've completely reworked the stone and diorite textures. A week-long hike in the desert was great for inspiration. Got to check out many different kinds of rocks. If you're ever stuck for terrain ideas, go stare at nature for a few days- it'll do wonders.

    • We've got ores! Lots of 'em! Only ores missing are emeralds and quartz remain (still no netherrack, so quartz will have to wait).

    • Other small tweaks, mostly to colours here and there.

We've also got a name now! Kartahni is an obscure Hebrew term for 'rural' or 'rustic,' which I think suits what I'm trying to achieve here perfectly.

So, what do you guys think? Do the ores all fit? Do the different stone textures mesh well?

As always, I'd really appreciate any and all critique and feedback.
