posted a message on How big of a dome will I need to enclose a 17x17 square?

Couldn't be arsed to figure it out, but I'm quite certain this will have the information you need.

If it's also important to have a certain amount of head space over it, use this website too.

posted a message on a way to pick up spawners and move them

I don't think it has ever gotten easier to make a mob grinder in Minecraft since dungeons were first introduced. Minecraft's dev team has no interest in making mob grinders easy to make. Dungeons were quite common in Beta, and I'm pretty sure that their huge drop in frequency was closely related to the balance change that happened when grinders became common knowledge.

This isn't going to happen, and I don't think it should. Pick a modpack that gives you that ability.

posted a message on Stupid Ways to Die in Minecraft?

Working on a building at night, looking up for a while trying to line something up, and seeing a creeper in front of your face when you look down again.

Swimming under a frozen body of water, only to have your hole freeze over and you drown trying to break through again.

Mining nether quartz on a flat area, only to discover it was a block or two thick and a deadly fall's height above whatever's below it.

    Digging straight down anywhere, really

Finding a part of someone's base labeled "DO NOT ENTER" and pressing a mysterious button in there

    Punching a pigman

Leaving the nether and coming back, thinking they will have calmed down.

Hoping a witch will trade with you

posted a message on Simply Impossible Survival - 1.8+ Preset

This preset does not have any caves, dungeons, water oceans, or water lakes. If you're finding those things or any worthwhile amount of ores, you didn't enter the preset correctly.

I tried again, and again met an untimely end from a surprise creeper. But this time I forgot to set it to Hardcore, and I was able to go back and take pictures and keep playing. I attached a picture of what looked like when I died. The waterfall on the right also flows into the hill, running a dark room mob grinder. It works wonderfully during the day.

posted a message on Simply Impossible Survival - 1.8+ Preset

Well, that was a good run. I didn't expect to die any time soon when I did, so I hadn't yet taken pictures. I was lucky enough to spawn near a waterfall, the only water source this map setting doesn't get rid of. That could be done by making it very flat, by the way. I found seeds and a tree, then I managed to redirect the waterfall to my farm.

With food stabilized, I started digging for ores, as I had noticed they were simply very rare in the preset, not nonexistant. Some extensive digging gave me time to think about the odds of finding anything, and I decided I'd be better off making a mob grinder and getting my iron from zombies. Before that, though, I decided to wall off and light up an area around my farm so I'd have room to work at night safely.

The lack of caves would make darkroom grinders very effective during the day. I dug out a room and split the waterfall so that it would flow through it and I could do a traditional dark room grinder. I set up the flow to go out of the cliff and drop monsters to a safe location underground near my failed mine. I was standing under the transport flow that went out of the ciff, lining up my drop point, and then I thought to myself, "Gee, I've been looking straight up for a while, I should check to see if any monsters are around"
Yes, there was a monster around. Creeper right in front of me. Classic.

Double-check your walls before you work at night, kids.

posted a message on Simply Impossible Survival - 1.8+ Preset

This is far from impossible. Definitely put my ingenuity to the test, but I've got a working hydrated farm and I'm going to see how far I can get on hardcore.

It's actually fairly intelligently done, but I can't tell whether there are a lot of rivers by accident or it was an intentional act of forgiveness to the player.

posted a message on Orca: The predator of the 21 seas! Now with a new model!

    My thoughts.

    1. Minecraft definitely needs sea life

    2. This thing would be a great random "sucks to be you" event for people out in the ocean. Good thing to add? Up for debate. I'd like it, but I also have been known to enjoy being tackled out of nowhere.

    3. Thank you for knowing how dangerous and badass orca whales are.

    4. Endermen have 40 or 50 hearts, I forget which. A huge deadly ocean mob should be at least this tough.

    5. It should have a double-chest's worth of inventory space containing the possessions of people it ate, and only ever despawn if there is nothing in this inventory.

    6. Blubber as a drop? Fuel, food, and maybe a gross block all in one. Not great in any purpose, but could derive value and purpose by its versatility.

posted a message on Remove diagonal lightnings or lightning annoying effects

I have been playing Minecraft since before lightning was a thing, and I have never had any meaningful lightning damage. You can make a very safe villager shelter just by making sure zombies can't get in or spawn inside. If it's so important to keep your villager safe that one of the most improbable events in the game can't kill it, make its shelter out of stone and don't have any open-air windows. There are plenty of non-flammable decorative options in the game these days, and several materials to cover your window holes with. Dozens, if you count dyed glass colors.

Also, since there is almost never lightning without rain, the overhangs you mention might be doing you more harm than good. Lightning fires normally get put out immediately by the rain. Building the shelter so that lightning can't hit any dry spots would also work.

posted a message on Any real reason to farm pigs anymore?

Pigs grow and breed faster. I think you can get more food per pig per hour than you can with an equal number of cows.

I think pigs should freak out when you ride them, and go faster when controlled with a carrot on a stick. Could play some role as a poor man's horse, or just funny if left uncontrolled.

I had no idea so many other people fill in creeper holes with cobblestone, then cover with dirt. I thought that was just me.

The turning thing is also extremely easy to circumvent with a modded client.

posted a message on Potion of Redstone Sight

I really like this idea, but unless you play on a modded server, I can't see it being worth the effort it would take to code. It would be great for Factions or any situation with protected land, or FTB stuff because of the large amount of wiring it usually has.

When traps are rare, and you can always break into an area by digging through it, it wouldn't be so useful. This is my vanilla experience.

But when traditional methods of breaking and entering are blocked by mods, or there's just a hell of a lot of stuff to mind, I could see an item like this comin in really handy.

posted a message on [Help] Just doubling Sea Level?

I'm looking for something like this too. I've met a little success.

Set the sea level to 128 and depth base size to 16.5. This will raise your oceans and terrain base level to the same relative heights they were before.

Then increase the spawn heights of gravel, dirt, diorite, etc. by 64 and increase the number of attempts by whatever fraction their spawning range got increased by.

Then double the spawning range of all the rare ores, and double their attempts too. Unless you want to dig through 64 blocks of stone and coal before getting to anything good. Doing this with diamonds will make them significantly easier to find, since they will now be able to appear significantly above lava level.

I wanted oceans to maintain a proportionately increased depth, so I decreased Height Stretch a little. The lower it is, the more it vertically stretches the terrain. This also made mountains taller and slightly crazier, which I don't have a problem with. Especially since I got 64-block abysses.

I also moved Upper and Lower Limit Scales apart a little, hoping it would add more caves or make them generate higher. The wiki implied it would. It didn't, but it did make cliffs and mountains a little crazier, which I didn't have a problem with either. The only connection I can find between the Limit Scales and caves is the grass-floored caves that are formed when the regular surface generator goes nuts and creates empty underground spaces.

I can't find a way to make caves more numerous or generate higher. On my current "deep" map, the surface is devoid of any cave entrances. I don't think caves appear til y=80 or so. Ideally, caves would only occasionally reach the surface, but both caves and ravines would be considerably larger and maybe more numerous.

I can't find any way to raise lava level.

I can't find any way to mess with the bedrock generation, but I don't really want to anyway.

I can't find a way to combat the change of grass color with elevation, or change the way snow appears at certain elevations in certain biomes.

I can't find a way to change the cloud elevation.

posted a message on allocating more memory to minecraft doesn't work

That's still more than it needs, unless you're running some kind of masive modpack I'm not familiar with.

If your game is running slowly, memory is almost certainly not the issue. Java issues or high/incompatible graphics settings might be the thing to look into.

posted a message on [Combat Sugestion] Enchantments

I like the idea of adding more side perks to the other protection enchantments. The current Minecraft PVP metagame has a single best set of armor and weapons, or perhaps a few viable minor permutations. A variety of viable options and strategies is very important for fun combat.

These precise perks, maybe not. But the idea is pointed in a good direction.
