posted a message on [Bukkit] Hunger Games Network
I'm going to begin by saying that the lame tl;dr version is this:

This is a Hunger Games plugin that is different from the rest, however it works similarly to the huge servers that exist in that you can either play on custom maps or randomly-generated maps. There is also a rewards system for in-game wins and kills that are synced to ALL of the servers running this plugin. The best way to try out the plugin before installing it is to grab some friends, go to the server list here, and play a round. It's also incredibly simple to set up your own server, maybe taking a minute or two. You can visit our website here to learn a lot more in a lot simpler format.

    -----------------------------------------
Here's the story of how/why the plugin was made (the plugin details are in this text too, and this seemed the most appropriate way to outline the plugin and why it exists).

This is one of the few things I've made that I feel personally proud of and I felt that some people on these forums would appreciate the product of my work as well.

I noticed the issue early on: there were a few huge "Hunger Games" servers that either offered an experience with a randomly-generated map, or that offered custom maps. The servers were often full, and donation was required to be able to win or enjoy your time playing on these servers because as a donator you would often be able to enter the "full" servers.

I envisioned a plugin that would handle everything for you just like the big servers would, and you could choose from randomly-generated or custom maps with similar "classes" functionality. There would be a central server that would hold all of the statistics, and anyone would be free to create a server. The server would be added to a server list that everyone can browse, and people would no longer have to wait for empty slots. If they wanted to play with friends, they'd just have to drop a plugin in a folder and they would be able to play to their heart's content.

Furthermore, there would be an end-goal in mind. Through gameplay, you can very quickly earn your way to other classes or other silly rewards like block hats that would be available on any server running the plugin. You'd get rewards points for both wins and kills, and if you so wanted, you could donate toward keeping the central server online. Rather than keeping excess funds as the big servers most certainly do, excess funds would be donated to the EFF, who fight for our internet freedoms.

That's the plugin I decided to make, and thus Hunger Games Network was born. In the final product, you can easily integrate your own maps with the plugin, and setup is as simple as dragging a plugin into a folder as well as an optional map if you don't want it randomly-generated. The best way to check out the plugin is to look at the (mostly empty right now, as I _just_ finished this) Server list and play a round. A server running "classic mode" will allow you to choose classes, and a server advertising any other map will be running any user-created map.

With permission from Vareide, I also made available the The Survival Games 1 and 2 (with 3 soon to come) maps with the plugin download for anyone to test out. There's another plugin called MapLoaderSetup, which allows you to integrate your own map with Hunger Games Network. The very simple instructions for that can be found on the website as well.

More information can be found on the Hunger Games Network Website, and we're often in #HungerGamesNetwork on freenode irc. I am committed to making this a worthwhile, awesome plugin, so please don't hesitate to contact us to make a suggestion or offer a bug report or just talk to us.

..and if you've made it this far in the reading, I would like to personally thank you for reading the wall of text I've written, and I'd like to apologize if this is in the wrong section. I feel really good about this plugin, and I want to share it with the world (:

I dont make minecraft mods, but to my knowledge as a programmer, converting the master program that minecraft runs by would make all old mods severely broken. Not as in they would need a small update. Each mod would basically have to get remade. So it's good for new modders but bad for old modders

I don't believe that's accurate -- LWJGL hasn't really removed any GL APIs from its library, so by upgrading to the newer LWJGL, almost nothing should break (especially ones that have absolutely nothing to do with lighting/effects/etc.) It's just a library, not a core piece of Minecraft-specific code.

I Don't think people here know what LWJGL is :/ What is it?

Lightweight Java Gaming Library. It's essentially the API by which Minecraft uses OpenGL (graphics, rendering) and gets user input.

I'm actually suprised he even thought of doing this. I wouldn't mind filling a form in with information of what I do with the game, and how I play it. But sending data against my wishes? That's wrong.

Notch on Twitter: "I'd rather not have it be an opt-in option, as most casual users would not activate it. But letting people turn it off, sure!"

Relying on "mods to fix it" doesn't solve the initial problem. As this is something which would be part of the .exe, changing it or similar would likely be illegal.

Sure it does, because it would be in minecraft.jar. If you haven't noticed, all the .exe does is simply launch an embedded launcher.jar, which can be even more easily modded than minecraft.jar.

The simple solution is to add an opt-in checkbox, perhaps under options.

Even if that doesn't happen, there would most definitely be a mod created to prevent data-sending from occurring.

    Quote from Vagrant0

Make and model of PC IS personally identifiable since every processor since Pentium (regardless of maker) has had a unique ID associated with it, same with IP. And some sort of identification for the data would be necessary for the sake of preventing someone from just connecting and disconnecting a few thousand times just to inflate data for some part of the game which isn't as popular and may be getting neglected (SSP). Just because it doesn't report back as being connected to "Robert Smith of Greensboro Connecticut, 2nd child of Mary Stevens and John Smith" or similar does not mean that it isn't personally identifying.

Regardless, people who do not have constant internet connections or who have limited bandwidth should not be forced to have to constantly transmit data back home when playing a SINGLE PLAYER game, or forced to opt-out every time the game updates or they have to reinstall. It is this sort of behavior which is killing PC gaming.

    *edit*
Currently being decided as an Opt-Out.
    https://twitter.com/#!/notch/status/162177293266075648

    Should be an Opt-In.

Your IP address could theoretically be logged by the login server as it gives you a token to authenticate with a multiplayer server. Is it logged right now? No. Quoting from notch's tumblr post here:

I also do not want my gameplay experience to be affected by that of others.

Lets just imagine that they can monitor anything, and everyone leaves the top of the big trees. I don't want them to create a tool specifically for that because people are too lazy to pillar up and cut it.

Seriously implying that changes as silly as that would occur as a direct result of this is ridiculous. Let's be realistic here. Also: Minecraft modding is a wonderful thing. Mods could and would be created if silly changes like that happened. In fact, if those silly changes ever happen, I will personally make those mods as well.

yeah, I found out your packet change conflicts with many SMP mods out there. Shelf mod, Xp books/tomes, (pretty much any interacting blocks or item that use right click (created mods that is not minecraft basics)).

When the official packet type for modding is actually implemented there will be a better way to handle this.. Until then I can either modify the Player class or the Packet Handler class /:

Also, hopefully Mojang fixes this before the modding packet is implemented d:

For some reason this mod destroys the throw rendering on Ropes+ grappling hook mod =/ Anyway to fix that?

That's odd.. The only class this changes is the packet handler. Is that a multiplayer mod?

    OK, I have a problem ...

I instaled this mod on clean MC 1.0 (put modloader files in .jar and then MB*) (META was delited)

but when I start the game it just freezes on "updating minecraft .. done loading"

    whats the problem ?

    using W7 x64

Can you post a crash log?

Also: I've been spending the majority of my time lately taking a break from Menu Bar development and focusing on Min/i/craft (not Minecraft) multiplayer.

obv u didn't read what i said or miss understood me as i <3ed minicraft but editing it atm is useless as Notch is redesigning it with more features and stuff :tongue.gif:

aka he is probably doing what OP id doing with tones more stuff :biggrin.gif:

Calling it "useless" probably wouldn't be the right word.. When I originally posted this thread without a download link and a video barely showing player movement, I had a portion of the thread that read something around the lines of 'It may seem pointless for me to do this. I'm doing this for one reason, and really one reason only: I've always wanted to make a multiplayer server. Now I'm doing it.' Regardless of if/when Minitale has multiplayer, I'm going to accomplish this goal of mine, and a few people might enjoy it in the process.

Regarding things being added: I'd love to collaborate with other modders (such as I Am David Minecraft, because his Minicraft+ mod is pretty great) to bring more functionality to the multiplayer realm. I think that this could be turned into a really enjoyable multiplayer game, especially if features like building or other ones in the Minicraft+ mod could be added.

Also: released pre-alpha 6 with slimes. To put it in the words of someone I was playtesting with, they are "derpy" for the time being.

    Goals for next build:
    - Air wizard, so a full map can be generated and a game can finally be completed with other people
