1 GB of ram doesn't seem sufficient. MC and java consume at least 500 MB of ram, just from the main page. My friend has 4 GB of ram and doesn't seem to have any lag. Perhaps it is a RAM issue.
Also, since everyone is so smart as to just "bump" the topic and not post anything that contributes to the thread, please stop that! Letting Notch know is 1 part, but isolating the problem is another.
This lag occurs on XP with 2GB, so RAM is definitely not the issue. Not only that...

It's not server or client side you fools! I'm the only one that has the problem on the server, and my computer is fine!
Sorry, had to get that out of my system.
You think it's the code then? I'll add that.
You're an idiot. It's client or server-related. This thread needs to be closed
...This also happens immediately upon using the 1.3 or 1.4 client and server. I can play on my own 1.2 server absolutely fine, but the game immediately begins to lag when I uninstall 1.2, reinstall 1.3 and join a 1.3 server hosted on the same PC that hosted the prior 1.2 game. Updating both to 1.4 does not fix this, but removing 1.3/1.4 and reinstalling 1.2 does. This is most definitely a compatibility issue with the last two updates, supposedly not software as someone has already said that the lag persisted even after a reformat and fresh Windows install.
Not only is this problem unique to SMP ("Has anyone tried to start a single player world?"), it happens on locally hosted servers that have no such issue with beta 1.2. Giving a server time to load by walking away for ten minutes does generate more terrain, but text and player actions still lag behind by at least a minute. I imagine some hardware or software incompatibility was introduced in 1.3 (more than a month ago, mind you—this is not "new" and Mojang has had ample time to at least acknowledge the problem) and stuck around for 1.4. I would like to test a fresh Windows install on the same hardware, but don't have the extra space to clean off my main disk at the moment.
The update is most definitely at fault for at least some, if not most of those affected. I have no issues with running 1.2_02 client and joining my own 1.2 server. However, as soon as I run the 1.3 versions (or 1.4), the lag kicks in and that's the end of it. Nothing is changing on either machine between these tests except for the Minecraft server and installed client version.
Hey when the game gets on full release this will be fixed. We're lucky we have access to the game now.
Illogical, considering chance is irrelevant in this matter. This is a paid beta, to which access was supposed to be, but is currently not possible as a large portion of said beta is nonfunctional due to err on the developer's part. Minecraft being a work in progress is no excuse for a game-crippling bug that started with update 1.3, lasted for more than a month with patch 1.3_01, and was not addressed in update 1.4 while numerous complaints detailing the issue had been lodged with Mojang support immediately following and throughout the time of the error. It was impossible for this feedback to have not reached them weeks ago. The only thing keeping this issue from being resolved now is laziness.
This is an issue with the 1.3 update and not something that can be fixed short of a new update that corrects the issue or downgrading to the 1.2 client. Your suggestions aren't going to have any effect besides needlessly running around users, chuck.
More than "a thread." At least a dozen massive reports have been given to Mojang support.
A lot of good a beta does when it doesn't work. You think there would be more incentive in fixing this problem than would warrant this amount of down-time.
Minecraft is overly dark on everything but LCDs with exceptional amounts of backlight bleed. As Notch has yet to incorporate a gamma slider, third-party software are the only solution. Gamma Panel is currently the best option I have found, as it allows you to adjust and switch between multiple image settings on the fly.

No. Game is still broken for whatever reason. My own 1.2 server runs fine for me, but lags like all hell once I update to 1.3 or 1.4.

It's been more than a month and this is still happening. Shame, Mojang. Shame.
