Maybe like mutant animal skins or salvaged plate metal or something? A scavanged riot shield, perhaps? The side of an old (small) shipping crate? A car door (pounded flat)? A cabinet door? A refrigerator door? One of those squarish manhole covers on hinges (you know the ones I'm talking about, right)? An ironing board? The back of a chair? The dish part of a satellite dish or radar array? Tea tray? Large book? Several books duct-taped together, end-to-end? Banged-up flatscreen TV (or would that be too modern)? One of the smaller wings from an aircraft and/or a wing from one of the smaller aircraft? Outer door from an aircraft? A less important character? The power of positive thinking?

Good evening. I expect you're wondering why I, Supreme Grand Imperial Commander President-for-Life BrokenEye, have summoned you here today to my top-secret volcano lair.

Well allow me to explain to you my nefarious plot. You see ladies and gentlemen I, Supreme Grand Imperial Commander President-for-Life BrokenEye Destroyer of Worlds, am in the process of constructing a vile phelebotinum-powered resource pack to remake all of Minecraft in my villainous image, and I am prepared to unleash it upon the world.

This is merely a warning shot to demonstrate the megalithic power of my ultimate superweap--*ahem*--my resource pack. When the pack is complete, all of Minecraft shall tremble before the evil might of I, Supreme Grand Imperial Commander President-for-Life BrokenEye Destroyer of Worlds, High Admiral of the Legions of Darkness. MWAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Behold!

    New In This Version:

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: Doku does it, Joli does it, even an educated flea does it. And ladies and gentlemen soon and very soon Yours Truly BrokenEye, Time Traveling Messiah, King of the Molemen, Emporor of the United States and Defender of Mexico will be doing it. That's right folks, VillainCraft will be releasing its very first alternate Flavour, originally just an edit of the pack for an adventure map I'm working on, but its quickly taking on a life of its own. They all laughed at me when I said I could make an alternate version of my pack! They called me mad! And guess what? They were right! And now those nice young men in their clean white coats are coming to take me away to....

A while back, I was starting work on building a villainous lair in Minecraft and I was looking for a good texture pack to work with. I couldn't find anything that I liked, so I created one instead.

VillainCraft draws inspiration from several villain archetypes, primarily the Supervillain, the Bond Villain, and the Mad scientist, with elements of Gothic Horror, Evil Empire, and Nazis thrown in for good measure.

    HELP WANTED!

If anyone is willing to make the endportal texture, fire animation and book GUI that would be much appreciated and I will give you credit.

I'd also be interested in anyone with musical talent making new, more sinister ambient music tracks.

I will not actually start work on the following Mod Wishlists until after the resource pack is finished

Behind the Evil is where I explain the reasoning, concepts, and or process behind some of the textures in the pack.

Most texture pack artists approach the bookshelves either as literal bookshelves or as some other method of storing data (scrolls, drawers, occasional computer cores), and I knew very early on that I didn't want to do it like that. How can data storage really feel evil, after all?

Many of my textures I came up with because I needed something specific for the Evil Lair map I'm building (which will unfortunately never be released due to mod issues), which was the original reason I made this pack. This was one of those textures. Specifically, the mad science lab wing of the lair was feeling a bit empty. I decided that I'd make the sort of shelves you tend to see in mad science labs, littered with gadgets and test tubes and creepy things preserved in formaldehyde. And of course a skull. There's always a skull.

The original bookshelf had just an oscilloscope, a set of test tubes, a poorly drawn fetus in a poorly drawn jar, and of course that ever-present skull, although quality of the graphics improved over time, of course, as I started incorporating textures and images taken from photographs (I just can't draw that well by hand at such a small scale, and I'm not ashamed to admit it). The current version of the formaldehyde sample is somewhat ambiguous, which I rather like. It’s taken from a photo of some sort of preserved animal fetus, but at such a low pixel count it could also very well be a lung or some other organ.

It wasn't until I implemented CTM that I was really satisfied with the bookshelf texture. The one original texture looked awkward and out of place when tiled on its own. CTM allowed me to flesh it out a lot more by adding more gadgets (a Geiger counter, a redstone torch bulb, and a magnetic suspension canister holding some sort of phlebotium, in case you were wondering), more glassware filled with mysterious glowing coloured liquids, and finally some actual books to justify the fact that books were still part of the recipe. Now the bookshelves add to the creepy villainous ambiance instead of distracting from it.

Hey there kiddies, you want more of BrokenEye's wit, creativity, and general weirdness? Well its your lucky day, as BrokenEye can be found in many places across the Interconnected Computer Network, almost all of which is entirely unrelated to Minecraft, villains, and/or VillainCraft. It just may well be the most interesting thing you've seen all year (assuming you lead a particularly boring life)! I really need to work on my marketing skills, huh?

posted a message on Privacy is a right, not a luxury
    Quote from BC_Programming»

    I agree with the premise.

However I do not think the body text is sensible in that context.

You are not saying that privacy is a right; what you are saying is that not being tracked is a right. But what is the limit?

    The
way targeted ads work is pretty straightforward. ad networks like
Google adsense put ads on a variety of websites, those advertisements
also track users because by virtue of your system connecting to see the
ad, they receive information about your IP address and your browser
headers, just like any website. Since they all connect to the same
server, that information can be amalgated together and parsed. For
example if you visit a lot of programming sites on their network, the
ads supplied to you will be programming-related.

    The reason I
ask- "What is the Limit?" is because it is somewhat arbitrary to say
that information presented under no pretense of confidentiality (your IP
address and browser header which are provided with zero terms) should
somehow be protected, and that the server system that receives this
information is under some obligation to never record that for future
    use.

it also fails to consider that you are tracked in
everyday life. That cashier that knows your name? That's a form of
tracking. If they see you get a lot of Beets, they might tell you that
you might want to wait until tomorrow since they will be a third the
price. That's tracking. It is exactly the same, in premise, to tracking
    on the web.

Also, here's a unique idea- Why don't you turn on
Do Not Track in your browser? Even if an ad agency decides to ignore it
at least then the browser header makes it explicit that the information
is provided on the basis that it will not be tracked. That is not the
case when you simply visit a website. Your browser gives your
information freely and the server has no obligation to protect that
information in any way, shape, or form. And any litigation that attempts
to make that sort of protection mandatory will be difficult to enforce
to begin with- not to mention opening pretty much anybody up to
litigation. If you recognize a user from one site on another site, can
they sue you because you violated their privacy rights?

I don't know where the line should be drawn, but I agree that there should be one. I think I'll leave that up to the discretion of the actual lawmakers. After all, this is just a petition, not a bill. And frankly, I've got a character limit I've got to work with, so I couldn't go into that much detail even if I wanted to.

And yes, I already have Do Not Track turned on. I also lock the door to my apartment at night, but that doesn't mean I think burglary should be legal. And not everyone is as computer savvy as you or I. Some people don't realize they're being tracked or understand how to protect themselves. I have a good friend of the older persuasion to whom emailing a link is to advanced a computing task to preform without help. This is why we have laws, chemosabe. To protect those who cannot protect themselves, and to ensure that those who can don't have to do so alone.

Equating "If you recognize a user from one site on another site" with being tracked is like saying unexpectedly running into someone from work at the grocery store is the same as stalking them. Even a small child can tell that the two are by no means the same, and even they won't be fooled by any slippery slope nonsense attempting to convince them otherwise.

A grocer might recognize you in the checkout line from the last time you visited, but he won't follow you around the store constantly watching and painstakingly recording your habits and behaviors as you peruse the isles—what you look at but don't take, what you take and then put back, where your eyes linger and for how long, what isles you visit and how often—and then tag along as you go about your other errands to do the same, follow you home, and then to work the next morning so he'll know where else you go, what you do on your time off, what your job is, what you're working on there, who your friends and coworkers are, who you talk to. To say the two are exactly the same is patently absurd. Our city fathers may be a few bricks short of a pyramid, but I trust that even they can tell the difference between "hey, nice to see you again" and "I've been watching you while you sleep", even if you cannot.

When a human being stalks you or spies upon you without your knowledge or consent, that is very much illegal, even if in their twisted mind they believe they are doing you a favor. The same should be true when a website or corporation does the same. When a policeman gives you a neighborly hello (though that doesn't happen much anymore), this is a nice gesture. When the NSA constantly monitors your emails and texts in secret, this is an outrage. Why should non-governmental entities not be held to the same ethical standard?

Try building with sandstone slabs. I think you will find what you are looking for as far as textures.

    ...

Also, Figured I would show a bit of what I am working on ... especially in the way of bookshelves. I have recently added Gany's Surface mod to my collection. As such, for the mod, wood type bookshelves were added. Well, I had to do a bit of a make over of how I have worked bookshelves.

The Oak Bookshelves will be found in my Alt pack, the rest will be found in the mod texture pack.

Ah, now I see what I was doing wrong. It was the carved sandstone that was changed. My nether temple doesn't have any carved sandstone areas taller than one block.

    Cool bookshelves, by the way.

posted a message on [Help] Resource pack organizational system?
    Quote from Taiine»
What is? That you can already get all the textures you need for a pack just by opening the .jar and draging out a single folder?

That may have been practical back several versions ago, but the .jar hasn't had the same organizational structure that resource packs have for some time now, probably since a little before recourse packs first replaced texture packs, and several of the assets used in resource packs are absent entirely. Using the .jar as a template is simply no longer a feasible solution. That's the entire reason templates exist in the first place.
Or the fact that sense 1.5, Mojang has updated their terms of use stating that just like their game, their default assets, textures, sounds, can not be freely distributed as it is their copyrighted works?

Before 1.5 with the old terrain.png and such, we had no choice, Mojang new that, they let it slide. Now they do have a say, as you don't need to include any of the default textures when making a pack, just what you have edited.

It's no different then if you make a pack and then don't want people to freely toss it out there or edit small bits and slap their name on it and so forth.

If you honestly believe that the reason people want a template is to "include the default textures when making a pack" then I'm afraid to say that you've completely failed to grasp the concept of what a template actually is. It's something to be used as reference, in this case in regards to dimensions, file names, folder hierarchy and similar properties which one must get exactly right in order for a resource pack to work. You might as well claim that dictionaries should be banned because the only reason anyone would ever use one is to steal the definitions.

If Mojang wants to prevent people from using resource pack templates, then they have a responsibility to either arrange the game assets in a way that doesn't make templates a necessity or to provide a template themselves so that others don't have to fill that need in their stead. Otherwise, they're just knowingly and willfully crippling one of their game's greatest selling points in a foolish and ill-conceived attempt to prevent a theft that nobody but nobody would ever commit in the first place.

Nobody is attempting to pass off the default textures as a custom resource pack, primarily because such a harebrained scheme has no chance of ever succeeding and everyone is well aware of that fact. People publish resource pack templates so that resource pack creators can use them as templates. Nothing more, and nothing less. It's literally right there in the name.

posted a message on "My Threads" on profile dropdown directs to New Content page and not to My Threads
So today I noticed the new "My Threads" option in the profile dropdown...

... and I thought, "Oh, that was nice of them to add an easier, more convenient way of getting to the My Threads page". Except it doesn't do that. It goes to that rubbish "New Content" page.

So... yeah. Just letting you know so you can fix it. Thanks in advance.
