Dude, seriously, none of you get his point. A inverter is used in (almost) EVERY LOGIC GATE. This could dramatically compact redstone gates. Sadly, he did not explain it right. Also, if it does not have a delay (Or a setting that allows it like a comparator does it's two modes) unlike normal torches, you could make a HUGE difference in redstoning. And about the torch protruding one block, here is a diagram.
= Redstone Torch = Redstone powered by Torch = Block Powered By Torch = Unpowered Block
As you can see, a torch will power a block above it with second degree power (Meaning that it will go through the block) and the sides being powered w/ 1rst degree power (Only redstone devices (Piston, dust, repeater, etc. recieve it.) and the bottom w/ no power at all. This is rather useful, but also annoying. Pistons can be powered upward-facing diagonal (Sorry hope u understand DX) power sources, making it seem as if a torch can power downwards, but they cant. (Maybe even the inverter will have 4 settings, 1. Acts like a normal inverter, 2. No delay, 3. No 2nd degree power, 4. Both 2 and 3.)
Also, it should be more expensive.
