When spikes were first announced to appear in strongholds, I was rather thrilled. It would be a new platformer element in the advanced dungeons, a lethal trap many would be daring to challenge.
It's 1.0 now, where are our spikes?
Spikes should be a new block, it adds some retrospect fun to Minecraft. Strongholds are only consisted of iron bars, silverfish blocks, and a few chests. There isn't an architectural challenge other than complicated stairwells, ravines that cut off corridors, and basic navigating. Strongholds need deliberate traps, and spikes would be on the top of that list.
I would recommend putting torches under your house, or keeping your home level to the ground. Or create another floor underneath that has a cool slit of sunlight all the way around blocked by windows. :wink.gif:
After putting together the Ender portal, we can already assume that the player has killed quite a few Enderman, mined diamond and discovered lava, defeated quite a few Blazes (while avoiding the many dangers of the Nether), and has explored some of a stronghold, to find the portal frame. Not to mention keeping himself/herself alive with food, equipping themself with decent armor and weaponry, and playing on a difficulty other than peaceful.
Very few players may ever venture this far in Minecraft, much less the ones who have already done it (extreme kudos). Now, would you want to risk a battle against the Enderdragon? Killing it on Creative is hard enough, and after exploring much of the Overworld and some of the Nether you can claim your title as an experienced Minecraftian. But will it be enough?
A battle against the dragon on survival is basically suicide. Even so, it's still the end of the game, which is meant to be difficult. But is it too much?
You're facing a dragon (a giant flying monster, greater than a Ghast) in another dimension that doesn't really resemble a place we know. Additionally, the dragon has dozens of horcrux-like towers that heal it and are almost essential to killing it. The Ender is also populated by Enderman, simply looking around will be a dangerous task. Is this a reasonable challenge?
I know that I may never reach the End, but it's worth a try. Right?
My friend and were making plans for a recent mod, we decided that Rotten Flesh should be crafted into rubber, rather then implying a whole terrain-changing mod (technic pack) to add rubber trees and whatnot.

Who actually wanted lanterns? I saw it as another hardship when mining deep, but spikes would make strongholds rather interesting.

An great addition for evil castles, parkour maps, ruins and spires, you name it.

I don't know about you, but spikes were the only reason I was excited about 1.8.
My point exactly.

Speculate.

It's the end, but hopefully not the end of you. That's the challenge.

I think it vaguely makes sense.
